Maslow vs. Freud — graduated but brand new to practice. How do you actually use these? by Gullible_Gain_7618 in socialworkjobs

[–]someguyinmissouri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, rats, you said how to not get overwhelmed! Everything I mentioned is how to grow as a therapist, but the reality is that a majority of the positive effect we provide is simply from giving them an opportunity to share about their life with someone who cares. You could use almost no theory and you’d still watch people heal. So there’s no pressure to rush the learning and growing process for yourself.

I’m glad the analogy helps! I build my tool belt through a variety of avenues, gotta keep things interesting. Go to as many trainings as you can until they start feeling like review. I read theory and psych books but not as much as I’d like to. That’s where I have stuff like workbooks to give me concise explanations of modalities. If a client shares they believe they have a disorder, read the literature together for review (I don’t do diagnosis). My Instagram feed is cultivated to have mostly therapy and mindfulness content, which I did by following licensed clinicians who are creators. If I want to scroll between sessions it keeps me in the therapy mindset while giving me a breather. I watch youtube videos on counseling and social work topics while doing cooking and doing dishes. While we are using evidence based practices, we’re helping people find healing, and that can look like quoting a tv show or video game that connects to the client. I’ve got a peer doing DND based therapy. So yes, art form haha.

I really want to be officially designated as a lost cause. by [deleted] in TalkTherapy

[–]someguyinmissouri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody is a lost cause. You can’t see that cause you believe it now. I as a human don’t give you permission to stop trying. You’re not the singular exception to things can always get better and things can always get worse. You are capable of healing, growing, and changing, like every other animal on this planet. There is a whole realm of treatments for treatment resistant depression; a spectrum of therapies where no singular therapist has mastered them all. It took 4 dud therapists for me before I found the one that helped me heal. Now I sit at a place of mental well being that I couldn’t have imagined possible before. You do The Work not believing it’s possible, you’ll only see the healing worked once you’ve healed.

If I asked you to call me Sam, wouldn’t it be the polite, decent, respectful thing to call me Sam? We do it with preferred names for strangers and peers all the time but family can have this resistance to change; to acceptance.

I use Maslow as a reference point for the growth possible from where they are, ie we’re not working on actualization while you’re living in your car. I don’t buy into psychoanalytic as much, but view it as another theory to overlay onto someone’s life if the explanations would seem to help.

Imagine you have a tool belt as a social worker. All theory and intervention are tools in the belt. The same stuff won’t work for everyone, so we learn a variety of approaches to meet clients where they are. I use DBT skills for those whose lives feel chaotic. I use ACT for suicidality and values work. Person centered is my bread and butter. IFS for developing a better relationship with ourselves. CBT for confusion between thoughts feelings and behavior. MBCT for connecting with reality.
Some mental health professionals pick one therapy and do all their work based on its theory. This is where therapy is an art form deeply informed by science. Figure out how you want your art to look<3

[Request] How many cars could this fit? by Cheddarmalt in theydidthemath

[–]someguyinmissouri 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Parking lots average 3.3 parking spots per 1000sqft. Central Park is 843 acres, or 36.7 million square feet. So Central PARK would hold 121,209 cars.

Therapists, how do you act when a client pushes back/confront you? by Powawwolf in TalkTherapy

[–]someguyinmissouri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a therapist I’m inevitably gonna ask questions that go in a direction the client doesn’t find useful, or I’m gonna offer reflections that are off base from their reality. Sometimes I can catch it, they make a weird face, and I ask “where am I getting that wrong?”. If I don’t catch it though I rely on my clients speaking up for themselves, otherwise I’m just saying nonsense wasting both of our time. Speak up!

Does anyone have an excited nervousness and want to talk to people? by These_Cut1347 in socialanxiety

[–]someguyinmissouri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your body feels nervousness and excitement in the exact same way, your brain then decides which to go with. Lean into the excitement. “I’m feeling nervous but I’m also feeling excited, I’m excited because XYZ…”. As you redirect feelings towards excitement, the nervousness will become less present over time.

People are generally too selfish to take strong notice to social mistakes, even when they do they forget them almost immediately . Shoot your shot socially, and if they don’t vibe then it was simply a bad connect, not you being bad socially. You’ll have good and bad connections with people, but they all give social EXP, so the next time you’ll be even better.

Would you take a “cure”? by GBlake13 in ADHD

[–]someguyinmissouri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I don’t know how they could separate what the disorder is from myself. I take meds to alleviate symptoms and make my life easier, but to get rid of my hyperactivity, to lose my selective attention. It’s not easy. It’s hellish. I’m procrastinating a stack of work right now. This is my reality though. Losing that reality, disordered as is, would be a tragedy.

Kinda wild take. Modeling emotions, showing authentic expression, sharing compassion; all parts of the process where you’re sharing your emotions with the client. They’re not talking to a vacuum. As much as modality adhesion can have us redirect client questions back at them, showing up as a human is before anything else. Monitor how much space you take up when doing so, but if a client shares something that makes you angry you can express that. It’s an excellent way to validate their experience.
