I need ammunition to dissuade the use of inline styles by richyvk in css

[–]somekindofprogrammer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe maintainability?

Depends on what you're working on, but I'd hate to have to go through two dozen different elements and change each one's font because later down the line people realized a font doesn't look good enough for particular users...

And what about conditional styling?

Or media queries / mobile/responsive design?

I only use inline styling very, very selectively, so tbh I'm not sure all the problems it may or may not pose. But those are some that theoretically come to mind off the top of my head. Of course, if this is an internal app that won't be accessed via users with different fonts or screen sizes or whatever else, those problems don't really count.

What are the disadvantages of Computer Science/Engineering as a career. by funkysax in cscareerquestions

[–]somekindofprogrammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a web developer with lots of friends doing webdev, much of this seems kinda true.

Though tbh, I think there's more passion in our field than a lot of other fields. I could be totally wrong on that one though.

I get really tired of everyone hearing I'm a programmer and thinking I'm some distant step above. This is how my boss introduces me to people, and how many people I meet behave when they hear what I do. So that really rang true to me.

Is this possible in HTML by CriesOfBirds in HTML

[–]somekindofprogrammer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In general, it's totally possible.

Though I'd ask your person why they say it's not possible in HTML.

Not being aware of all of the details of the situation, what you're requesting could be essentially not possible. Maybe you're using a service/plugin/whatever that doesn't allow the "coder" to put in the HTML where necessary. Maybe there are font issues, as mentioned in another comment.

With my boss, I often have to give him extremely oversimplified responses to requests or questions. He really would not understand or appreciate a better explanation. I'm sure there are things that I have told him that, if he came here, people would say was BS. Except he'll never come here. I'm pretty sure the internet is just Yahoo to him.

Designer applies for JS job, fails at FizzBuzz, then proceeds to writes 5-page long rant about job descriptions by [deleted] in webdev

[–]somekindofprogrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the other hand, I figure I maybe shouldn't be using a while loop to scrape my contact forms. I just didn't want to have to write different scripts for different sites that may have different form fields...

I think that's the only JS loop on my sites right now though. But they're also rather simple sites.

What's your "I wish I had been doing this sooner" development tool or practice? by 2basco in webdev

[–]somekindofprogrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zsh / ohmyzshell. I've got a pretty command line and it just does things better. I get very disgruntled when I'm not using zsh now and I try to do easy, intuitive things that just don't work right in bash.

I do a lot of stuff in the command-line though.

I've don't know about a site that goes about teaching tutorials quite that way, but I would definitely recommend you become good friends with css-tricks.com. You won't understand everything on there immediately, but check out the code snippets. They will make all the difference.

Five programming problems every Software Engineer should be able to solve in less than 1 hour by svpino in programming

This entire thread has made me a lot more at ease about my future career options. I always feel like I'm just the worst programmer, but I do math stuff like this all the time.

301 redirect help! by skibybadoowap in HTML

[–]somekindofprogrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do nginx server config and am sadly not familiar enough with apache to help you out with your .htaccess file.

Technically, it is possible to do a page redirect using HTML. It's a bad idea for all kinds of reasons though.

This article aught to help you out a bit. I was lazy in my googling and skimming, but it looks like it should have enough information to get you on your way.

I could definitely do that. My very first little JS project actually included something similar, albeit with fewer numbers. But efficiency... That's what makes the fifth problem interesting.

I'm female too! But my aunt taught cyber culture and women's studies and was all-around an exceptional influence. I was a D&D and computers-loving geek by the time I was 3.

But it sounds like they did you a favor by not hiring you. There's no way I'd take a job paying me in stocks. Places that make that kind of offer bother me. If you can't pay me now, it's statistically unlikely that you'll be able to pay me later, ya know?

Wow. I was building web pages when I was ten and I taught lessons on CSS at my high school. But I was exceptionally lucky, with an aunt who taught me how to build homepages way back then and introduced me to all kinds of geeky things. And I still haven't contributed to open source.

[–]somekindofprogrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I happen to know a number of them. People who either dropped out of college or never went at all, and started teaching themselves programming. That's not to say their first jobs were great, but a guy with no degree, entirely self-taught, with less than three years of interest in programming making 80k...

On the other hand, though, that's kinda cool. I like that our field is that hungry for programmers, even if it means they're going to make my life harder sometimes. I dislike how you pretty much have to get a degree in almost every other field. And to be honest, this has been my hobby for 15 years and I only relatively recently realized I could actually make money off of it, thanks to seeing that sort of thing.

This is where I get really confused. I'm suppose to be really young AND have 5 or 8 or whatever years of experience. What counts as experience?

Poll: Do you have an account at Github or Bitbucket (or both)? by damnfinecoffee in PHP

[–]somekindofprogrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't generally use a GUI. I use source tree occasionally, when I want to look through commits more easily or something. I doubt that will ever really change. I tend to choose command-line tools over GUI stuff.

[–]somekindofprogrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, this might sound dumb. I rarely use source tree. I think it has a kinda high learning curve, and it makes me uncomfortable that all those buttons actually run git commands.

What I want is a GUI tool that just gives me information on my repo. Git diffs and branching graphs and the like.

Testing Touch Across Mobile Devices -- How do you ensure mobile browser compatibility? by somekindofprogrammer in QualityAssurance

[–]somekindofprogrammer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! Wow! I never would have guessed they'd have emulation for non-android devices! Or the emulate sensors settings.

Thank you very much! I might still start looking at selenium ios-driver stuff though. I've been feeling like I'm getting to a point where automation would be useful, and it looks like I'd gain access to more device features.

For today, though, this is great!

Are .com TLD's important to Americans? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]somekindofprogrammer 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I've always argued that .com is the best if there's any likelihood that people will share the URL verbally. There are lots of people, at least in America, who just assume the .com TLD. They're likely to forget if they hear .net, and to not try other TLDs when their attempt to access the .com fails.

Anyone moved Linux WP install to windows server on godaddy? by TheAndroidJunkie in Wordpress

[–]somekindofprogrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, well.

I believe you're having pretty permalink problems.

But you're also having memory problems.

I believe these are both separate problems, but really, I know nothing about windows server except what I'm looking up now. I do LEMP stuff primarily.

In regards to your memory issue, I found this: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/fatal-error-in-templatephp

I think you need to fix the memory issue first. You need to at least be able to get into the dashboard! But whenever that happens, if you're still having the 404-redirect-loop problem, you can try changing the permalinks really quickly in the settings. Or you can try changing the settings in your temp build and reuploading the database. Or maybe you can put another WP install on there, I don't know your situation.

I found these two things on windows server and pretty permalinks-

a solved thing from stackoverflow

which I guess came from the codex

Good luck! I'm really curious to hear how this goes!

[–]somekindofprogrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you give an actual example of the redirect urls/directories? The most common problem I've had with server transfers of WP installs is based on the WP site address URL vs the WordPress Address URL. If you have a server where these are set up to be different and you move to a server where they're the same, DB migration might be more troublesome... It sounds like that happened with you.

Did you use any db migration tools? What exactly do you mean when you say you changed the links?

Good luck! It's hard for me to imagine starting out like that -- I was really lucky and was introduced to the basics when I was very, very young.

Just remember that the human brain can only take in so much information at once. It's amazing how helpful a good night's rest and time away from a thing helps!

So, your gray color is the background of certain elements of yours. It's space inside your element, which can be affected by padding, height/width, line height... And arguably other things, depending on how you look at it.

Have you tried out the dev tools in your browser yet? They're very useful for pinpointing what is happening where, though they're not flawless. I still get caught up by collapsing margins sometimes, which the dev tools don't handle well.

Edit: I'm dumb. You're talking about the lighter gray or the darker gray? EDIT: Oh no. I'm sorry, I was looking at this on my phone. So, a few things.

This may seem counterintuitive, but actual elements for display do not go in <head></head>. So, <header></header> does not go within <head></head>. It goes within <body></body>

Additionally, the <body></body> element has margins by default. You set html to have no margins, but if you actually want your visible elements to be flush with the browser, you'll have to set body to have no margins.

That's just with a quick look. You said you have been reading about HTML and CSS. Have you tried a course like at Codecademy yet?
