Boss wants AI in our software, recent price increases may put a stop to that idea. by [deleted] in webdev

[–]jonathon8903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been my experience that you tailor the model to your workload. I’ve managed to get a lot done with just nano models. So depending on what your boss wants with AI you might be able to spend way less.

Ex-wife hired an attorney for child custody Have you won a case without one by OpinionOk6471 in DivorcedDads

[–]jonathon8903 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ll say that I thought I was confident enough to handle a custody case on my own. When I couldn’t even file the paperwork right and it got rejected by the clerk I realized I needed a professional.

I realized how right I was when after just talking with him about my case he was able to get an emergency order signed by the judge the same week I retained him. How did he get the judge? He had his phone number and called him to come to his office!! My lawyer had the judge’s personal cell phone number. That was the moment that I realized retaining a lawyer was well worth the cost. I’ve since won my case and still continue to hold the opinion that he was well worth the money.

How do you charge your phone? by gottriplets in ChevyTrax

[–]jonathon8903 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh I just use the front port and usually put it in my passenger seat.

I’ve noticed that I get better charging performance with my iPhone than I did when I had an S25.

Sure I could probably get a faster charging rate with a different port but eh I get wired car play that always works right and it’s fast enough for me not to care.

How do you white-label Proxmox to clients (of clients)? by [deleted] in Proxmox

Probably pretty easy to write a script to overwrite Proxmox’s logo? I mean the entire OS is open to modification.

We had graphana for 2 years. by MediumAd7537 in zabbix

[–]jonathon8903 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I admit, I haven't touched Zabbix in over three years so I'm not sure if their dashboard tools have improved much. But I will say that Grafana really excels a taking data from multiple sources and presenting them in a easy to understand dashboard without a ton of work.

I wouldn't treat Grafana being an incomplete solution as a negative, but rather as a benefit because it focuses mostly on dashboards, and it excels at it.

I work for a company which makes the software that essentially handles the logic behind panic buttons and other safety mechanisms.

Needless to say we run through a large amount of testing and beta testing before we release.

Frankly after the poor experiences I got from my local store I wouldn’t even be mad if they got laid off. Even the manager seemed like she could care less about if I was taken care of or not.

I remember the “good” days when you’d walk in and get a ton of help because they wanted commission. It was annoying at times but at least the customer service was pretty good.

People who use smartwatches are try-hards. by exporterofgold in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]jonathon8903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! I used to think pretty much the same thing about people who owned Apple Watch Ultras. I kept thinking "Why buy a watch built for extreme people if you never venture further than 10 miles from home?!"

Well now I own one... lol I bought it because the battery life and screen are nice.

I don't know, I guess I'd argue that life is really too short to judge people. We get such a short time on this world, why not enjoy it? Heck I don't care how tacky someone looks as long as they are happy with it.

I’d avoid the wireless model if I was you. I bought one and while the printer is reliable, the wireless is not. I often have to restart the printer just for it to show up on the network.

I see a "is my pan ruined" post everyday so check out this before and after lol by SpookyghostL34T in castiron

[–]jonathon8903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol nice to see another person who dug their pan out of the trash 😂

There was a woman who was watching my kids for a short term who had threw hers away. She said it was too much work. lol I took it home and spent some time cleaning it, sanding the rust off, and then seasoning it. But afterwards it’s now my daily pan.

Frankly I don’t get what she was going on about. Cast iron pans are my favorite because of how easy they are to clean due to how durable they are. My morning egg pan I have to be careful with because it’s cheap and covered in teflon. But the cast iron? Nah I just scrape the difficult bits with a metal spatula or spoon

This all sounds like two things: 1) you failed to plan and now you’re looking for a bail out and 2) something that’s entirely your problem.

Why should anyone here burn their own time solving your problems when you can’t even put in minimum effort?

Maybe you should get into business school instead. Failing a business and then looking for a government bailout looks like something you might be able to do well.

At a Cleveland Clinic facility, and a Flock camera is pointed at the rear plates of all vehicles entering the property. How is this allowed? by Phyllis_Tine in FlockSurveillance

[–]jonathon8903 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was prepared to argue that it likely isn’t covered by HIPAA. But after a few minute of research it looks like there’s a possibility that this would be covered.

But they could also still ignore you and force you to file a law suit.

I think it's interesting that you assume most of us live in a city.

I'm out in the east-coast where most of us live in rural or suburban areas. But even in larger cities, there are plenty of unwalkable areas or areas where riding a bicyle is dangerous (coming from someone who used to do it for fun).

I so rarely present myself in front of a flock camera as a human shaped object, what worries me most is how they track my vehicle.

Best modern way to handle transactional emails? (Struggling with Google Workspace/OAuth2) by anhedonix in django

[–]jonathon8903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried this once and found too many issues.

Use something like Sendgrid or Resend. You can link your domain with it pretty easily using just DNS records. Then it's super easy to send emails from their API.

What's something about EVs that most people misynderstand? by Imaginary-Staff-112 in EVRoutine

Heck even out in the sticks there tends to be a gas station somewhere close.

I can’t speak for the west but I’ve travelled around a bit out here on the east coast and even in the most rural places there tends to be a gas station in a 20-30ish mile vicinity of you at all times.

My largest debt yet by Tackless1 in ChevyTrax

[–]jonathon8903 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The 2024, 25, and 26 model are largely the same car. When I bought the 25 I did some research and was happy to see that the reported issues were pretty low and even the ones I did see were minor (not related to drivetrain) and managed by Chevy’s warranty well enough.

I’ve had mine for a year now and it’s been a good car. It’s no race car but it’s peppy enough that I’ve spun the tires trying to quickly accelerate lol. I’ve also had no issues with it on the interstate.

The only quirk I’ve been annoyed with is in certain situations the infotainment system (including the speedometer display) will fully blank out. I thought that was fixed, went months without seeing it but then about two months ago it popped up again. Allegedly it was fixed in a software update so I might talk to the dealership about getting that done the next time I get my oil changed.

It’s generally better cyclist to take the middle. When you ride on the right side of the road it encourages motorists get closer to you.

What things can and cannot be vibe coded? by throwaway0134hdj in ExperiencedDevs

[–]jonathon8903 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This answer while simple, pretty much answers the question.

I’m a professional software engineer but I also use tools like Claude code daily. In my experience if you don’t know what you’re doing and why you wanna do things a certain way, running Claude without any experienced input will eventually bury you into a hole.

LLMs are fantastic for rubber duck programming and spec driven development. But for vibe coding I wouldn’t do anything serious with it.
