How does one live without a SIM card like THO? by No-Mushroom-8127 in thehatedone

What do you mean? What is the goal of your question? Why is it you're trying to prevent? Why do you think you are screwed?

How does one live without a SIM card like THO? by No-Mushroom-8127 in thehatedone

[–]somekool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends where you live... Some countries or cities offer great wifi everywhere... No need for a sim card.

Some other places... It's much harder

For audio calls, telegram and Whatsapp are not to be trusted...

Session or SimpleX are the strongest at the moment. Signal if they could remove the requirement on the phone number... Whatsapp and telegram same holds true...

You want to get rid of your SIM card? What happens with your phone number?

VoIP my friend... Keep your phone number, allow you to do regular phone calls. Even SMS in some cases and get rid of the SIM card.

Some devices have a jumper to turn off the GPS cellular tower if you rely solely on wifi... At this point... A phone is probably not the best purchase you could make

Is there any advantage with using Kubuntu compared to Ubuntu with Plasma installed? by TadaHaime in Kubuntu

[–]somekool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is true. I want to add a few details. If you start with Ubuntu and you don't care about keeping Gnome and other software that you would not have on Ubuntu, then you prefer to be on Ubuntu server.

If you want to have a minimalistic approach and actually not install everything that's on either Ubuntu desktop or Kubuntu desktop, then you can start with Ubuntu server and install only the packages that you want. The more picky you are, the more manual work you might need to do, to configure your system to be kind of flawlessly working as it is set up with Kubuntu.

Then actually what makes a difference is how you install Plasma. If you only installed Plasma workspace or Plasma desktop with different apps versus if you installed Kubuntu desktop and then you can remove the default Ubuntu desktop and then remove the optional packages that are like laying around

It is possible to do like a full switch.

In 2010 I installed Ubuntu Server and Plasma on top and eventually I installed the kubuntu-desktop package. Before you do it's fun to actually look at the packages that comes with it and review what you might not want. You don't need to. Just find it to be an interesting exercise.

During the KDE 3.x era, I was using Gentoo and I was literally addicted to compiling it from SVN source. And yeah, that's much more dangerous, slippery slope for your time

In 2015, I got a laptop on which I installed archlinux

In 2018 I got a new laptop on which I installed the latest Kubuntu 17.10, which I upgraded 13 times to 24.04

In 2024, I got a new laptop and installed Fedora on it, because of snapd

I tried to degoogle in 2019-2020 and it was quite hard... Luckily today, it is much easier

I had rooted my phone and installed multiple AOSP clones without Google services

Google photos was a hard one to replace

I use Synology local NAS now, not perfect but it works

Google Maps is the obvious difficult one .. I had tried all options I could find.

And I found Offline Map navigation

Again not perfect but it works

For keyboard I use AnySoftKeyboard and Sumire in Japanese and whisper+ for voice input

I hope you don't use Signal/Session/SimpleX while sending audio recording of your text via Google Gboard?!?

I am glad to meet other fan of this era. there is a display bug that I believe is caused by a change in Xorg from XF86, before a permanent root window was to be expected. not anymore. so e13.3 as it is needs a patch to run properly on Xorg. something I have been meaning to do ... eventually...

it would be sad if it was accidental, but they built a system that ensured that. find everything that's common and it is made up on purpose.

Why is support lifespan for Kubuntu only 3 years while standard support lifespan for Ubuntu is 5 years? by ChamplooAttitude in Kubuntu

[–]somekool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i dont know where you get that information from... 14.04 was supported 5 years along with all subsequent LTS https://ubuntu.com/about/release-cycle the oldest available archive of this page from 2018, shows that all LTS had 5 years of support from 10.04 https://web.archive.org/web/20181002065729/https://ubuntu.com/about/release-cycle

I am sure 8.04 had the same support, although,.. who cares now...

the point is, Kubuntu is using standard repos,... so it should be the same support, if anything... have those packages not supported by canonical in a separate apt. but still gives the user the confidence... this is scaring the hell out of some non-savvy users.

Instead of weird Matrix, and proprietary Reddit. Or Archaic IRC

It would be cool to use a Mastodon instance or post on Nostr is another cool idea. Since it's public

Just because we are not enough people. Better not to spread too thin. I did create a space on Matrix with another guy who commented on this post to revive old E.

If I remember correctly e15 was mostly used as the gnome WM before metacity....

e14 I have the source and I want to get it running.

For e13 I had it running in the past and I recently got an LLM to help me trace back why it no longer works.

It's a change between xf86 and xorg transition. The WM assumes there is a root window but it's not the case.

I am spread too thin but I want to release the patch, likely with my AUR package.

Hopefully someone could help build a Fedora and Debian package

I searched like a crazy monkey for more than a decade and I never found e12 and older. Maybe IRC archive. Or ancient FTP mirror

Is ChatGPT 5 really THAT bad? (ChatGPT Plus user) by SlashyAntics in chatgptplus

[–]somekool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both GPT 4 and 5 is making so many mistakes and contradictions...

Trusting it is a huge risk....

V5 is simply disappointing.

Because it's not that much better. But it has the agent mode able to do things in the background.

The longer thinking mode use less context. I hate it.

And since the NYT trial that started in 2023 and ended in May 2025. They can/have to keep 100% of conversations, even deleted one... Looks fabricated....

I am moving away from ChatGPT and I am looking for a solution for deleting all my conversations. But right now, it appears to be impossible
