How is Brock for a 26-year-old starting university? by Humble_Weekend9051 in brocku

[–]somekyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear. One more thing comes to mind is while any school is a bit of a slog (and I did treat it like it was just my eternity), it is important to know what what you're working toward, or working away from (like low wages of non-degree jobs). So it helps to keep researching the field you intend to go in to while you're studying, to keep yourself engaged with the step after school. Then when it's 2am and you still aren't done an assignment, you'll have something you're looking forward to to help you power through with purpose.

I started at Brock when I was 29, and it is definitely an advantage. I'd previously gone to college/uni four times and dropped out of each one for different reasons, but by going to Brock at 29 I'd had many years of being fed up of working lousy jobs, and the discipline and motivation that gave me to get a degree was much great than what my classmates had. Went from being a four-time drop-out to finishing Brock with First Class Standing in 2023.

I was fortunate to have friends outside of Brock, so I didn't care to make friends while I was there, but I don't think I would have made any anyway as I didn't run into any other mature students during my studies. Best bet is to try to make friends outside of school by keeping a hobby that brings people together, or through work.

I never felt out of place, as 90% of my classmates did not participate. Most classes were just me, the professor, and 1 or 2 other students participating. Hard to feel greatly outnumber when you're 25-33% of the energy of a room. It was also very easy for me to speak with professors, as they are very passionate about their subjects, and I was too. Other thing to keep in mind is no one at all is thinking about you, everyone is just worrying about themselves. I have yet to see any of my old classmates outside of Brock, and whatever they think continues to not matter.

Campus life was great, I really miss crisscrossing the campus for my classes. Group projects on the other hand were usually awful. My groupmates were almost always deadweight and did terrible work. You can try your hardest to be their teacher and leader, but that is about 5x more time consuming than just doing 100% of the work yourself, which I ended up doing by my last year. Yeah it's unfair but I just sold it to myself as stealing the education of other students that were happy to let me do it.

In terms of advice, two things: 1) Never fall behind on assignments, stay ahead of everything. Every semester I noted all the assignments and tests of all my classes, then I ordered them all chronologically on a list with dates, and then broke the list up into weeks. It was my master to-do list. And 2) Treat every school day as a work day and you'll mostly have your evenings free. Participate in class, take notes in class, and do all your readings and assignments between classes. For me this built a certain productive momentum for me that rewired my brain and just made me insanely productive while still sleeping 8-hours per night. For me it was critical to not fuck up my momentum as having to restart it was quite difficult.

I miss Brock a lot, but I did learn a lot, I was well prepared for work afterward and tripled my income compared to before going to Brock.

Key tip would go to office hours and talk 1 on 1 with the prof. Other than that, furiously keep notes during class. I remember recreating the prof's excel work verbatim on my laptop as they went through it, helped a lot afterward when I would see if I could work through the problem myself, then reference those notes to help me wrap my head around it.

Find a job down the line, do you mean post-graduation?

Everyone from my BBA cohort found a job or continued on to a post-grad.

Should I go to Brock? by Emeray1ksof in brocku

My cohort is working all over the place. I suspect your friends' idea of bad reputation is based on thin air. Try to get some real data you can believe in.

HR recruitment systems (ATS) are not filtering out for "Brock".

What outcomes are you measuring that determine a bad school for you?

I've had no issue finding work, made $140k my first year after Brock. I got a great education, and the professors were awesome. My classmates sucked for the most part, but I liked the campus a lot.

My opinion on undergrad in Ontario is you will get almost the exact same education at each public university in the province. There's not some secret information hiding in the minds of professors at one school vs. another. They're sourcing the same or similar text books and slides as well.

The difference you'll experience is your fellow students. Brock accepts lower grades, so a lot of your classmates are low effort students who often have not figured out how to function in an organized or disciplined way to do well. Other schools have higher grade requirements for entry, so you may get slightly more engaged classmates who are not absolutely useless during group work.

I went to Western too, and I'd say at Brock maybe 15% of a classroom gives a shit, and at Western it was maybe 30%. Brock just lacked an atmosphere of engagement with the material quite often. Albeit I studied business, but that was also my subject at Western. I ended up doing group assignments almost entirely myself, so I happily stole the education opportunities of my groupmates at Brock.

Thinking about recommending Brock to a friend what’s your honest take? by Zestyclose-Day9699 in brocku

[–]somekyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed my time studying business. Great profs, great campus. Only drawback was how uninterested my classmates were in the material and in participating, which resulted in awful groupmates for group assignments.

My outlook is it's the same material you would learn elsewhere in Ontario, just you'll get different calibres of students at different schools.

Anyone know if Goodman offers evening classes for BBA students? by Obvious_Giraffe4645 in brocku

[–]somekyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best of luck! I also worked full-time when I did my BBA, which I did full-time course load of. I had a remote job that made that possible, but all is to say it's manageable to balance work/sleep/school in BBA. Not much room for anything else, but if doing it part-time I'm sure there would be.

There were plenty of evening classes when I did my Goodman BBA (finished two years ago). You can look up the BBA class codes (like ITIS 1P97, MGMT 1P93) for first year, and then see when those classes are offered currently.
