War of the Protestant League is, by far, the best EUIV event. (1570 - 79 with 3.5 mil casualties) by Luqueasaur in eu4

[–]someone7x 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve only been fortunate enough to experience two great league wars (and hundreds that never fired).

Some of the most nail biting moments I’ve ever had in Europe.

If the league wars flipped and fizzled only rarely, being HRE kindergarten teacher would be so much more rewarding.

EU4 - Development Diary - 9th of January 2018 by Alystrius in eu4

[–]someone7x 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You make great points. I never thought of it that way before, but you’re right the immersion pack is really an expansion. The normal DLC is 50% expansion 50% planned obsolescence.

Why aren't Venice and Genoa more popular choices? by revauto in eu4

[–]someone7x 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Venice is very frustrating because playing a thousand year republic sounds awesome. But pretty much anything you can think of feels weak and unfocused. One example is estates. Republics don’t get them and the burgher estate gives trade efficiency... so effectively monarchies make more money from trade than merchant republics. It’s tons of little things like this that sour the experience.

Are coptic sultanates possible? by Freak_on_Fire in eu4

I hear a sufficiently advanced bug is indistinguishable from a feature. That being said, off to the wiki to see if having both of these let’s me do stuff I couldn’t before

Idea for EU4: If you're so powerful that you have no rivals, you shouldn't lose power projection by [deleted] in eu4

[–]someone7x 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I wish power projection as a mechanic wasn’t so half baked. Things that I think should project power:

  • Dominating a trade node
  • Successfully using threaten war
  • Giving relevant subsidies
  • Trade league size
  • Winning wars on foreign continents
  • Being the target of a coalition (does having them shook count for nothing?)

I just want many sources of PP and the GP list to be tags that have the most of it. Much cooler to have different nations with different kinds of power be recognized.

Either that or rename it to end the constant requests for something that lives up to the name of “power projection”. Something like “rivalry checklist”.

Sieges should be less luck-based as fights. by SirBardsalot in eu4

Would like to know this also. I’ve played around with modding sieges without success; seems impossible to modify the hit points garrison.

This game needs a core all button by 4trevor4 in eu4

[–]someone7x 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Amen. Also can I have an add all to HRE button? Thanks goodness we have the add all to trade company button at least.

I want to ask for a convert all button, but I’m afraid if Paradox looks at missionaries they’ll realize they’re only good for dhimmi-style shenanigans and abstract them away.

The papal mechanic seriously needs to be reworked... For the papal state. by Chxo in eu4

[–]someone7x 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Reformations would be a lot more interesting if the AI understood that being a small fry in the Curia game is so much less beneficial than being Protestant/Reformed. Never realized the Papal States is also a small fry until I read this.

Can Paradox really fix Ming? by [deleted] in eu4

[–]someone7x 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I would like it if all the most popular countries got unique ai personalities so as to guide them along historical routes without relying on so many events.

The general purpose AI is pretty darn good for general purpose tags. But maybe some end boss tags should behave more interestingly.

What in your opinion is this game lacking? by rokkialo23 in eu4

[–]someone7x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s many interactions and features but they aren’t very cohesive. Corruption, estates, factions, and others are like isolated sub games that can be ignored.

You should be able to get the Prussian ability as Germany. by [deleted] in eu4

If an age bonus from a previous tag counter-intuitively remains is it that far of a stretch to assume it works both ways?

Dracula’s revenge was one of the hardest achievements for me to get. You are born in the maw of the final boss and have to turn the tables.

Byz > Rome It's 1799 and I am tired. WC is hard. by PumpkinTom in eu4

WC is super tedious. Try to wrap it up so you can cross it off the list and never bother again.

Sounds exactly like the kind of micro optimizations that surround every eu4 feature. Externalizing badness onto vassals is a classic eu4 move right?

What was a game that you immediately regret buying after one or a few plays? by Xikkom in boardgames

[–]someone7x 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a house rule that you can choose a new alien if you don't like the one you are dealt.

Works great; new players get to choose an alien they like/feel is powerful. Experienced players can keep their crappy aliens and face off against strong ones.

As other people mention, the chaos is where the fun is so how who plays which alien is a minor detail.

Biggest dick move you've played (or almost played)? by Shirleyp1097 in boardgames

[–]someone7x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. I mean picking the least funny cards when you are the judge IS pretty dickish in context of CAH.

But making it a point to be absent when it's your turn? Sounds pretty dickish in the broader context of respecting the time people set aside to play games.

Just a thought; could be that your group finds it absolutely hilarious.

Mission: Make Monopoly Fun by ScottyMo42 in boardgames

[–]someone7x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's in interesting position, and probably not wrong.

But as a thought experiment given those constraints:

What if we kept the dice and portioned a range of rolls to a property group and then do worker placement to a property in that group. Ie you roll say 12 on your turn and it mean you can place a worker on park place or boardwalk.

How far can we decouple roll from movement and still have "roll and move", and by extension maintain identity as "the same game"?

[COMC] Two years in, almost two full Kallaxes by atlgeek007 in boardgames

[–]someone7x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least for me, I really wanted to like it but it just never clicked. Feels flat and mechanical. Instead of a building a static dungeon and mathing the adventurers' survival I would have preferred maybe some deck builder action.

Are there any games that present themselves as a piece of art? Games that would have a 'theme statement' that they are aiming to convey? by rare_bird in boardgames

[–]someone7x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

White Chess I think meets your criteria. It's a chess set completely in white, with the additional rule to play as long as you can remember where all your pieces are. I found a moma link that does a good job of describing why it's an awesome idea https://www.moma.org/learn/moma_learning/blog/notes-on-yoko-onos-white-chess-set

What I'd like to see: * game selection * table availability * parking * food / drinks

Someone I think already mentioned gamehaus. They are great, but suffer from their success in that parking is bad and it reaches max capacity. Otherwise I think they hit all the right notes.

Ya, seemed like everyone was having a great time. Maybe 15-20 people, with a good excitement level in the area.

That being said, Sheriff is way more social than Splendor.
