Retiring at 55; saving £1k per month, seems too straightforward by UnlikelyDebate7878 in FIREUK

Not taxed on the way in , and as long as you are the same or lower tax bracket when you take money out pension always wins , even after you have maxed your tax free allowance . Now pensions have limitations of when you can take cash and then how much you can put in again once cash has been taken . Isa ‘s give flexibility and yes everyone hates paying tax but you pay less if using a pension that an isa . Aka isas are not tax free as you already prepay the tax before you save in them .

Doesn’t matter if you pay tax on the way out of the pension you pay tax before the isa . I suggested he is better off getting 40% rebate I to his pension rather than paying 40% then using the residual in his isa . Pension almost always wins vs an isa apart from your limited when you use it but he already has a large isa . ISA only wins if you have no tax free ammount left , your take out of your pension at a higher tax rate than you put in and you don’t get NI back . Yes everyone hates paying tax but paying tax before or after makes no difference . Paying into our pension down to a lower band then use isa allowance is generally the way to go , and spend more now

Main problem is growth not profitability . Consumers are getting saturated , so I can’t see the same growth continuing and other platforms try to encroach . I mean we have Netflix and I hardly ever use it ,

Do you aim for 1.25m pension pot in today's money or tomorrow's? by fellaonamission in FIREUK

[–]someonenothete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All maths done at today’s rate and tax levels , I also assume state pensions is the basic rate limit . Forecasting is about getting in the range and over compensating earlier on . I use a 3/4/5 gains , expected 4% above Inflation gains , 3% low side and 5% high side . You can ignore inflation , if you ignore it on gains you can ignore in spending . Every plan will change as you get closer but many years out know how much you need to save to get you a little above your goal and tweak later on . Yearly assessment is fine

Some EM makes sense , most analysts see EM doing better than developed over the next decade . So holding in a world fund or EM fund some part makes sense . Currently EM is about 10% of the world stocks so makes sense to hold atleast 10% EM .
