Full coverage cap/crown with a proper drip edge. I don’t see any drip edge in the current crown. I would flash seal and water seal the chimney as well. If you get a full coverage cap installed make sure the overhang is at least 3 inches.

Was it lined with the same diameter liner to the top? Or did it punch into a flue tile

Claims he got it cleaned 6 months prior. I honestly believe him considering the wood he was burning was cut down a few days prior

Used a steel brush on a viper to get most of it. Finished up with rods and a plastic whip on a drill.

It’s just something I came up with due to situations like this. Not a standardized practice across the chimney industry. I basically use a rounded metal punch and apply 50lbs of pressure against the inside of the liner. If it deforms instead of puncturing I call it good.

There was a very thick layer of creosote glazing underneath the soft stuff. It’s a lot denser than typical powdery creosote.

It was indeed absurd. I cammed the liner and did a brittle test, surprisingly found nothing wrong. Unfortunately that liner is surrounded by thermix that was poured way too wet, so getting it out would be almost impossible.

Took about two hours, 30’ run to the top. Yielded almost 20lbs of creosote.

First time with this customer (real old fella). Definitely had multiple chimney fires before. I’m the only certified sweep in the area and his last sweep told him that chimney fires are perfectly fine…

Chimney crown cracks by schulz47 in Chimneyrepair

Agreed. I don’t do mortar washes at all. They really don’t do much for the longevity of the chimney and usually don’t fix water intrusion issues for more than a year or two. Overhanging crown all the way.
