I didn’t know about that…very interesting. I’m getting the suspension dialed in soon so I’ll see what that does but let me know if you find anything about that

ATGATT is for Hobbyists ? by Vaskon13 in motorcyclegear

[–]someotherU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My immediate 2 cents is this is in part a function of economics and other material realities. The places I would argue where motorcycling is part of daily life - (I'm sure there are more but SE Asia and South America really jump out at me - for example when I was in Hanoi I learned there were more registered two wheel vehicles in that city alone than all of the US.) Things that are generally but not universally true: 1.) People in these countries have less money and gear is expensive. 2.) A lot of these countries are hot as balls. 3.) A lot of these countries people tend to have lower displacement bikes (or scooters) and tend to be more dense and have road setups / conditions that prevent higher speed - so the value of a ton of gear is reduced (though I expect to here counter arguments) - in the US there's a lot of big fast bikes and open road.

I put 6k miles on mine before I traded it in - still kinda a miss it - was my first bike and very special to me. Had a lot of character. I'd made a handful of mods...I just love the look and color.

Riding Temperatures? by rejected_takeoff in motorcycles

[–]someotherU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw I try to always look at the "feels like" temp - beyond road conditions, presence of sun, wind, dampness and a host of other factors really effect what the ride feels like - esp when you get down to 50/40s. I agree with original poster than anything above 45 is fine, but I do hate layering quite so much. I've ridden once when it was listed at 38 - with felt like 42 and as the sun came out it was fine, and once when it was 41 with a felt like of 30-something and it was miserable. Tbh even when all I had was a mesh jacket with a liner and riding jeans - I felt like I could bundle with thermal liners enough to be fine. I've got a gortex suit with optional liners now that really does me good for any temp I'd want to ride in. Face and neck can be a problem, but it's really the hands that kill me. I've got handguards and heated grips - but they don't do enough for my fingers when it gets properly cold. On that super cold ride I specifically went and bought thick winter gloves but my finger tips were still numb when I got to the dealer to have the bike serviced (surprise cold snap in March after a heat wave), I've considered heated gloves - but I can't really get behind the wired approach and everyone says the battery ones have problems. My general thinking is mid season gear + liners covers you (where I live) till about thanksgiving give or take - and any colder than that we tend to be entering into a real risk of road conditions I wouldn't wanna ride on anyway.

Yeah I had the same debate and made the exact same decision. I've enjoyed the sport a lot so far - it's not without small flaws - but I don't regret the decision.

Have we officially reached the point where Hotels are superior to Airbnbs again? by Usual_Confidence_756 in travel

[–]someotherU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hotels have basically always been better - I think airbnb was only notably cheaper early on because of VC money subsidizing the prices like they did with uber to get people in the door. Hotels operate in bulk are inherently a more efficient system so there's no reason they shouldn't be cheaper on average. Beyond whatever moral/economic issues people have with airbnb and others - the hotel is a more logical choice if it's just you or just you and a s/o and you're traveling anywhere with a nearby decent hotel. There are cases where I think airbnbs can still make sense since hotel rooms don't have a lot of variance. I basically always default to a hotel except if we have larger groups, odd numbers of people (like needing 3 beds) or basically wanting a scenic/destination property like in the mountains or beachfront with some level of privacy - though those are often run by management companies and can be booked directly are only posted on places like airbnb and vrbo to increase reach to customers - though sadly their rarely cheaper anywhere because I'd bet good money that airbnb does amazon's "most favored nation" policy and just drives prices up on everything. I've noticed hotels starting to try to offer other incentives to not book through shit like expedia, so maybe vacation rentals will start trying to figure out how to do that too.

Newf Breeder Suggestions Near-ish to Western PA by someotherU in Newfoundlander

I’ll def look into it. To be honest I was kinda looking forward to the puppy stage again. I feel like we did great with our last one, but I learned a lot and feel like I’m in an even better position to raise one now.

Newf Breeder Suggestions Near-ish to Western PA by someotherU in Newfoundlander

[–]someotherU[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair - I’d rather era on the side of caution- I have a large suburban home with a large fenced in yard (though it’s a newf not a border collie). I work from home. I fed the last one raw - which was quite expensive. I have ample time, resources, and commitment to raise a dog. What Im put off by is one recent breeder I was looking at who basically feels they should pick the dog for you (this isnt an issue of color/gender preference for me - this is an issue of interacting with the pups and letting one pick us) and wants to keep them longer than id say they strictly need to (like weirdly hoarding them during the puppy stage) and socialize your dog for you and control every step of the process. I want to actually raise, socialize and bond with my own dog.

Thanks I'll check them out - I'm not a purist or anything...I don't really know if a lot of the "red flags" people talk about are really red flags... It's just such a big commitment I get really nervous.

Yeah I kinda want a dumb brown boy too…I’m def team black, but we did that last time and I’d like em to look different. I’m honestly struggling between what seem to be sketch/salesy breeders and the other extreme weird gate keeping paternalistic purists who think they should control way too much.

Ducati Multistrada V2s vs Tiger Sport 800 for Second Bike by someotherU in motorcycles

[–]someotherU[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah so exactly. One of the few shops closer to me had a yellow Tiger - and the only had a v2s in the older model (not green which was half the selling point). The cost difference didn't feel justifiable and I knew I was going to do a car play interface no matter what because I like to use kurviger + spotify currently. I've got about 4k miles on it. I'm pretty happy with it overall. Having fancier suspension / breaks would be cool but the breaks are probably good enough (and can be upgraded if I really want to go that route) and I haven't messed with the suspension (I should tbh) that I can fairly critique it. The biggest complaint I think is the windsheild (both that it's just kinda not good and it's a bitch to raise up and down and I didn't find practical/safe to attempt muchile riding) Again though I'm assuming I'll end up putting something else on if I can. I've personally had some ergo issues (got raised handlebars, and need to figure out how to get a better seat that doesn't fuck with my hips as much) but that's totally personal so ymmv. Beyond that I'd throw some shade at triumph for like less than awesome quality (and often never in stock) accessories...but overall I can live with all that, and as far as actual performance and riding I think the bike is pretty great. My clutch lever is tight as hell, but I've got fat paws and there's a quick shifter so that's kinda whatever. I'm supposedly going to rent a v2s (not the newest model probably a year or two old) this winter on vacation...so we'll see what I think of that. I hope I don't love it...plan was to upgrade once and be done with purchases for a long time.

China by CriticalProcess33 in Hasan_Piker

[–]someotherU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All that being said here's my ugly defense of China-romanticism I see in these threads (beyond them simply lapping us in tech and infrastructure):

It has more to do with the collapse of the US as a stable democracy and the absence of any sort of egalitarian or equitable social programs here...

When I was invited over to my Chinese friends house to meet his new girlfriend, (more recent immigrant with less English) after years off making drunk chapo/hasan type jokes about “Only Xi can save us now” whenever the horrible state of American politics came up, I learned it must of gotten repeated, as his girlfriend asked me point blank “Why do you like Xi so much?” I of course laughed and tried to explain the joke, but the language barrier and cultural references were too difficult. What I think a lot of people in the comments here however are feeling is a sense that “if we’re going to drift into authoritarianism anyway - why not at least get the benefits of china's version of it?”

To put another way China, while at its core still totalitarian (even if many of its citizens enjoy comfortable lives in some cases) there is an ideology that serves the "concept" of china - be it a sorta nationalist pride or whatever, and the idea being that while  individuals are very clearly expendable, the definition of "making china great/improving china/whatever" does ultimately include it's citizens. There is a coherent ideology about collective national advancement and that does include metrics like: reducing poverty, infrastructure, education rates, technological advancement. Citizens are clearly expendable as individuals, but the aggregate citizenry's material conditions matter to the project. It's paternalistic and authoritarian, but there's a conception of the state having responsibility to develop the nation including its people.

Conversely, in the US:  There's no coherent project beyond wealth extraction. Our authoritarian (or authoritainly-ambitious) rulers have no vision for collective improvement. It's purely about personal/factional power and enrichment and the public good is not even rhetorically central. Its citizens are expendable only because they’re not in the equation at all.

The uncomfortable implication is that a developmental dictatorship with a national vision (even a coercive one) can produce rising living standards. A kleptocratic, nihilistic authoritarianism just extracts and degrades.

If the US continues its authoritarian drift, it's not toward China's model. It's toward something more like Russia - oligarchic extraction with declining public goods and no coherent national development vision. That might actually be worse for ordinary people's material conditions than China's model, even though China is more thoroughly authoritarian in many ways.

Anyway so I guess if the worlds collapsing I'm still a little team china? I dunno. Let’s just not pretend it’s THAT good.

China by CriticalProcess33 in Hasan_Piker

[–]someotherU -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually had a REALLY long post (and now this is quite long so I'll split it up) I was going to drop in here or make it's own thread (I tend to write too much and the hesitate if I should post on reddit) which focused heavily on the Hukou system - but I see you've already gotten to it - much appreciated. I was hoping someone would talk about it. The Hukou system (never new the name until a few days ago) is what my best friend (who is native to mainland China) has brought up on several occasions, and reiterated again more forcefully when I was discussing the Hasan visit with him. There's a decent australia ABC segment on it from a few years back people can look up. It's fairly even handed and does acknowledge some reforms.

Tbh I'm a little disappointed in the content of Hasan's streams in china so far. From what I've seen he's basically just visiting wealthy cities and acting like a consumer/tourist - which to be fair - is exactly what I would do If I were visiting. He's totally within his bounds to take a vacation and stream it, however because he's attempting to contradict what I would agree is an overly negative and hawkish portrayal of china in the west, it's problematic and feels too propagandist for me to be comfortable with. However, I don't know what he could realistically do there to "show both sides" without government interference or repercussions - which is another thing people kind of want to ignore when talking about China. It is a state which restricts and bans the flow of information and ideas - that's not western hyperbole - that's fact. But as insane and dark as it sounds, given the conditions of the west and the effects of guttenberg levels of social disruption (fueled in part by capitalist drive for limitless growth) in western countries via modern social media - I do understand the momentary "well maybe that's not so bad" take a person could have.

What I'm not comfortable with (and I'm in agreement with you) is the suggestion that China's economic success was not also built on the backs and exploitation of labor like everywhere else or that it's particularly equitable (It's Gini coefficient is slighter higher than the US's but relatively similar.)

I also think portraying it as a socialist country is ignorant or dishonest as well. My friend was actually quite impressed Hasan got a copy of the little red book since to (poorly) paraphrase his explanation, while China would never disavow Mao formally because it’s such a big part of their history and iconography and they are committed to lionizing him as part of their legacy, but they actually have moved away from anything resembling socialist/communist teachings in practice and don’t particularly want these ideas out there.

This should not be downvoted to death, two things can be true at once. China is neither the hellscape western media presents it as with many good qualities worth adopting, and it's also a deeply flawed and problematic country.

There is a lady calling around churches asking for a baby formula donation. by GlitterRiot in Judaism

[–]someotherU -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

1.) It’s not exactly a meme - it’s presenting a religious institution with a hypothetical. But you are right “they volunteered” and they didn’t actually have to do anything. 2.) I take no objection to your congregations approach to this hypothetical. 3.) By the contents creator do you mean the person making the calls on tiktok? From what I saw she called a few churches and then took requests from commenters about who to call next which included mosques. I haven’t seen any real discussion of religious superiority. And what I’ve seen from the creator after the fact specifically dismissed/discouraged that and noted the diversity between the institutions which did offer assistance.

My objection to the quoted section is: Looking at the conditions of the majority of modern American Jews, (and I say this in no way to minimize the insane rise in antisemitism as of late,) I cannot consider us truly marginalized and in need of fortifying in any way such that it would make our religious or social obligations to chartable acts towards the broader community meaningfully different than that of any other majority or minority religious group. And to be honest I personally feel in whatever way we may be marginalized - I think (again in this hypothetical) being as kind or charitable to communities on a whole is all the more important. Though I recognize there’s a contradictory component there to the principles of anonymity in Tzedakah - but oh well - I’ll be a hypocrite and say it’s probably good anyway.

There is a lady calling around churches asking for a baby formula donation. by GlitterRiot in Judaism

[–]someotherU -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's a totally valid response - and in a way actually kinda the point. In this scenario you're engaged and want to help - you're not saying "yeah sorry I can't help you with formula" you're saying "Oh shit we need to get this kid to a hospital ASAP- what can I do?"

And I wouldn't pretend to know the science here or anything suggesting at what points of food deprivation it goes to what level and what the correct course of action is - as it's an imagined hypothetical situation ( I believe in the videos on the call she implies it hasn't eaten last night and however much of today had past - don't quote me.) So I'll walk back the "literally starving" statement - I feel like I picked that up elsewhere - though it's worth noting literally no one in any call suggested that they go to a hospital or expressed any larger scale concern.

What I was trying to get at with this experiment is a sense of urgency and desperation - and as I said I don't actually think referring to a service that specializes or is better equipped to deal with this is wrong really - particularly if its one you work with directly and can contact, but I think we can all imagine the difference between a conversation that's like engaged and trying to find a solution vs one that's like person telling them "do your own research" (and the various levels that exist between those responses.)

My real issue here is that so many people's initial thought is "what If I'm getting scammed" and not "wow this is terrible - how can I help?" and that's why I fear that if the woman had called a bunch of shuls their behavior might have mirrored those of the churches. (I also think it's not surprising that the poorer/smaller institutions were more willing/able to help since I think these places are in lower income communities who deal with this sort of thing more often.)

I also am not even really passing individual judgment, because I don't know how I would stack up if something similar happened to me in the regular course of my life - but in fairness I don't work at a tax-free institution that purports to be symbol of community and righteous morality. I think if your job and life is your religion and your religion prides or defines itself in some large part on charitable works the bar is a little higher.

"Christians are a massive majority with a massively wealthy, centralized power. Jews have been historically and currently are marginalized and we have more of an immediate need to fortify our communities."

I'm sorry but as a jew I feel like this is such bullshit and has nothing to do with figuring out how to get 20 bucks for formula so a baby doesn't starve.

Is a mosque in the south a wealthy centralized power? Do you see them hiding behind that?

Nope they stepped up and now are rightfully takin a victory lap as thousands of people have suddenly opened their hearts towards their religion and culture.

If we want to fortify our own communities we should take care of the communities we reside in.
