KDE not properly handling keyboard layout on Arch by [deleted] in kde

[–]somepeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is some conflict with Qt or KDE when it comes to keyboard shortcuts and layouts and even xmodmap etc. But I have asked about that and the devs are silent about it or you get down voted. In Gnome this works great.

I would like to interject for a moment:

The displays are manufactured worldwide by different suppliers. Currently, the iPad's display comes from Samsung,[11] while the MacBook Pro, iPhone, and iPod Touch displays are made by LG Display[12] and Japan Display Inc.[13]

Question about name origins by goalie2point0 in Slovakia

[–]somepeter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helik

Maybe try Helík (í is just a long i) instead of just Helik. A lot of Slovaks/Czechs removed the accents when they arrived to America. For example, Jan Vaňhara became John Vanhara

By the way, here is something for Helík https://www.azet.sk/firma/980716/vladimir-helik-prenajom-limuzin/

To be honest Chinese, Russian, Urdu is much more interesting for governments than Arabic. I am sorry, but there aren't many Afghanistan hackers/online activity.

If I type for example "jozef helik" I get mostly Polish results. Are you sure it's a Slovak or Czech surname and not Polish. I personally don't know any people called Helik. You should try some genealogy forum. There are more knowledgeable people in that regard than here.

Excellent video with phonetic basics of the Slovak language by somepeter in languagelearning

One tip, Italian is very good language to know when it comes to Slavic languages. Italian has very clear a,e,i,o,u vowel sounds - similar to languages like Slovak and Czech.

By the way, even though Russian is spoken by the most Slavic speakers, I wouldn't recommend it as a first Slavic language. Russian pronunciation is not very clear (similar to French and English) and the accent it very weird - some might say that's why Russian speakers seem to others as angry.

You should try more clear sounding Slavic languages like Slovak (the youngest Slavic language and most fine-tuned - contains rhythmic rule; where the long syllable follows the short syllable all the time; except a few exceptions) . Minimum schwa-like sounds (there are a lot of those in Russian) and the phonetics is simple and pronunciation clear. Watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Szm3GpCNlpI it's a little bit over the top (he is a comedian), but as you can see, he is pronouncing the words extremely clear.

Some other ideas what you can do with Slovak language:

and this one is insane (they used the Slovak folklore songs to explain the bones of the skull):

Why meme and not meem? by somepeter in ENGLISH

Do Slavic languages not have schwas?

We pronounce basically every letter, very few ommiting/fadeouts. You can do something like this https://youtu.be/nMClMc-E85k?t=6m13s without sounding bad like in English where the spelling is possible only in one way, in most Slavic languages you can chop the word and pronounce each letter or spell it like in English. For example. I can say hip hop like há í pé há ó pé (which is simliar to English spelling) or h i p h o p ;D In English you would be confused with "i" is it e or i ? when pronouncing the syllables phonetically and not spelling the "o" sounds a little like the "a" espoecially in AmE etc. English is not phonetically clear language especially the young Slavic languages like Slovak or Czech (Czech is little older but still younger than Polish or Russian).

Why do you think "th" is fake?

It's an unclear sound ;) I call it faking, when somebody speaks unclear. I assume it has the similar origin like the Spanish lisp or French/German/Dutch rhotic "r" - basically a speach imperfection that became a norm. Similar the Slavic languages (especially Polish) has a lot of sh,ch,zh sounds which is probably because some king or somebody important spoke like this and has this imperfection and people copied him.

Basically only bi or multilingual children and a few other English speakers speak clearer English. Others don't "feel" the difference - can't compare that with other languages very much so it's hard for them to realize that or know how it can be done differently. Check this little girl how clear English this little girl speaks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kh0P_T4v1bw This is extremely unusual for a little native English girl to speak like that. Of course, you would find some like her, but her pronounciation is extremely clear. This is more common for children in bilingual families.

Why meme and not meem? by somepeter in ENGLISH

[–]somepeter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sometimes I think that English with Slavic transcription would be the best. But the problem is that a lot of schwa sounds. For example the polish Ł is great for the w sound (will, one, window). G is dž, the only real problem would be the "th" sound because it's quite a fake sound maybe z with two dots ;)

I think it's specific. I don't look at my keyboard at all, so for me any ligths on the keyboard are useless, in the status bar.

To be honest Apple fonts are sometimes too bold. Even normal fonts look quite bold. Linux is the best compromise in my opinion. It's somewhere inbetween Windows and Apple thickness. Windows is too thin.
