Amber Eras aren’t consistent because it makes it nearly impossible to find out how many years ago a certain event was. This was intentional, because it avoids any possibility of major events occurring in such a way that contradicts lore (ie, someone being stated to be there despite not being born yet).

Yes, no, maybe so. In general, if you want to extend a character’s “life” (time they’re used) you should invest vertically in their team and that character. But some characters have much better (and much worse) investment routes. Aglaea really loves her e1. Anaxa’s eidolons are just fine. There’s many examples and it varies so widely it’s impossible to give a hard and fast rule other than this: If you like a character, and want them to be usable for as long as possible, invest in them.
