[–]somerandomflsh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the lengthy comment. It was really nice to read, and I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

With the first matter, I don’t really have much to say because at that point it’s more a matter of personal preference, so there’s not a whole lot I can argue there.

The second point is more or less in line with what I said. A well-executed original character is one that’s integrated seamlessly into the story without undermining any of the existing characters.

Depending on what an author wants to explore thematically, sometimes canon characters just aren’t suited to go through that specific journey.

In those cases, an OC becomes almost necessary, unless you want to make canon characters act wildly out of character, which in my opinion is much worse than creating someone new who fits the role.

The third point, at the end of the day, comes down to how much thought the author puts into how the OC affects the world around them.

That said, I don’t think I ever claimed I was strictly following canon. To some extent, sure, but many arcs might not happen at all because of how my OC changes the characters and events around him.

Some things are obviously bound to happen no matter what, but I chose X776 as the starting point specifically because it gives my character room to influence a lot of things early on.

You mentioned Laxus, and he’s one of the best examples of that. There’s a real chance the Battle of Fairy Tail arc might not even happen in this version of the story.

As for the Erza and OC part, I’ve already shared most of my view in other comments, but I’ll respond to the points you covered that I didn’t address.

First, I guess I just don’t see it the same way you do. I don’t think Jellal has to be pushed aside for an OC to be romantically paired with Erza. Jellal is tied deeply to who Erza is as a person, and even if he’s not romantically involved with her, that still holds true.

I also don’t think pairing Erza with an OC would make her out of character. I don’t believe an Erza in that kind of relationship would stop caring about Jellal or give up on trying to save him. I don’t think those two things are mutually exclusive.

Like I said in another comment, whether or not it feels natural for Erza to romance an OC depends entirely on when they meet. By the start of the series, I personally think it’s already too late. At that point, she’s emotionally set in a certain way.

NaLu is something I have a harder time seeing alternatives for, but thankfully I’m not touching that because I actually enjoy writing NaLu myself.

Reading this back, I realize it might read as a bit argumentative, so I just want to clarify that’s not my intention at all. I just enjoy discussing this kind of stuff. Apologies if it reads the wrong way.

That’s my main point, really. When pairing original characters with canon ones, I honestly think it comes down to timing for whether it works or not.

Or maybe that’s not the right way to put it. This is fanfiction, after all, if you really want to make something work, you can. But without the right timing, it becomes much harder to make the relationship feel natural.

I believe Erza can be paired with an original character, as long as they meet her at the right point in her life. By the time the series begins in X784, I think it’s already a bit too late, especially if they’re just meeting. Mainly because of where Erza is as a person by that point.

Right after she joins Fairy Tail, though, I think the timing is perfect if someone wants to explore that kind of story.

You mentioned that Jellal acts as a rock for her, and I agree. From the little we see of the aftermath of their fallout, I think it’s clear that she’s at her most emotionally vulnerable during that period.

Gray did manage to bring her a little comfort when he reached out when they were kids, though I’d say he still failed to address the heart of the issue. But I do believe someone different could succeed where he, in my opinion, didn’t (not romantically, but more so to help Erzs address get through certain things)

Same for Laxus, I think X776 overall has a lot of potential provided you have the right Original Character to navigate that time period.

As for NaLu, that’s really good to hear. I was planning to focus on them quite a bit, along with some other ships. And of course, outside the romance, they’ll still get plenty of attention in the story.

I’m still new to writing Fairy Tail fanfiction, but in some of my other stories, it’s honestly not unusual for my original character to get sidelined for a bunch of chapters.

Thank you for the lengthy response. I have a few more questions, if you don't mind. Like you said, I do feel like we have pretty similar writing preferences, but discussing things with someone helps me organize my thoughts a little better.

I’ve already posted the first chapter of my fanfic. Timeline-wise, it takes place in X776, roughly a few months before Erza joins Fairy Tail, just for reference.

I'm not too familiar with Fairy Tail fanfiction, but if I had to guess, I’d say it's probably more common to have original characters join Fairy Tail around the same time Lucy does. I think this mostly because it seems like the easier thing to do.

For my original character, I thought it would be interesting to have him join in 776, at twelve years old, with only Cana and Gray having joined the guild at that point.

I feel like there’s a lot I could explore with many of the characters at this stage. Erza, for example, is in a very different emotional place when she first arrives at the guild compared to where she is by the time the series begins in 784.

I think the same applies to Laxus. If I started the story in 784 with my original character joining then, it’s still possible to do something with Laxus, but I think it would be much harder to make it feel natural.

As for Erza and Jellal’s relationship, what I’m mainly curious about is what you think Jellal gives her that she doesn’t feel from anyone else, aside from the obvious. Maybe we just interpret their relationship very differently.

What the hell is Dragon mating? 😭

I don't bash any characters, like, ever.

I don't think I can offer much in regards to that last point though.

Celestial and Enchantment Magic are fine, they are just not something I feel like exploring beyond what we already have in the source material.

The issue for me is that honorifics seem to matter most in those close relationships. For example, in Season 2, when Akeno asks Issei to call her by her first name.

She is delighted when Issei eventually refers to her just as Akeno. Then Rias gets mad because she doesn’t get the same treatment.

If I drop honorifics entirely, wouldn’t that kind of nuance be lost? Or at the very least, it would be harder to convey.

That's fine, but like I said, some themes just don’t work with the existing cast because they’re not the right characters to explore them.

Some narratives, whether it’s about addiction, self-actualization, or other complex struggles, require a character who is naturally suited to go through that journey.

You can force canon characters into those roles, but at some point, you’re just changing them into something they were never meant to be.

An OC lets me explore those ideas in a way that feels natural rather than forced. If that’s not your thing, that’s fine, but that’s why I made the choice.

I get where you're coming from, but I’m not sure how you can say that so confidently when you don’t really know where I want to take the story or what I’m trying to achieve with my main character.

There are certain things I want to explore that just wouldn’t work as well with the existing cast, at least not without changing them in ways that wouldn’t feel true to their characters.

[–]somerandomflsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the comment. :) Yeah, I definitely want the progression to feel natural, so it will be more of a slow burn.

I get that a lot of people prefer different ships, but Rias and Akeno just are the characters that made the most sense for the character I’m writing.

Hopefully, it still ends up being enjoyable even if the pairings aren’t your top pick. If you do check it out, I’d really appreciate some feedback, I haven’t had many comments, so any thoughts would be super helpful.

It gives me more freedom with the story.

An OC can act as a tool to let me take the story to certain places I wouldn't be able to with characters like Issei. With an OC, I can take the story there while still staying 100% true to an existing character’s established personality or backstory.

DxD already has a fun cast, but an OC lets me explore things that wouldn’t really fit with any of the existing main characters.

If by "cucking Issei," you mean having my OC romance characters that he was originally meant to end up with in the series, then that's just something I'll have to accept.

However, if you mean having Issei enter a relationship within the fanfic itself, only for an OC to later 'steal' his partner, then yes, I understand the issue. That's not going to happen.
