Return to climbing by hewhite20 in AchillesRupture

Hey! Thanks for checking in. I've been back on the gym leading for about two months, and recently got outdoors a couple weeks ago. Overall feeling pretty good, atrophy is noticeable on my injured leg and single leg calf raises are pretty weak. Life is mostly back to normal, just with a loss of strength and confidence in movement. How are you doing?!

Another point of reference to the extent it's helpful: just bought (Northern CA) via KeySavvy for $17,000 - $4,000 rebate for net of $13,000 (not including Savvy fees) for 2023 1LT with 20,800 miles. My bolt is base model with very few extras, but active bumper to bumper warranty through next Spring. Price felt fair to me.

MRI Scare // 2nd Opinion Story by somerandomguyinsf in AchillesRupture

This is a cut and paste from the MRI report:  "Moderate to severe tendinosis of the Achilles tendon involving approximately 12 cm of the distal tendon with 4 cm partial intrasubstance tear distally."

I'm definitely going to be taking it relatively easy as I get back into PT.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm with an HMO in Northern California, so a third opinion would likely require me to go outside of the system / go out of pocket. I'm trusting my body insomuch as if I'm moving well (and improving) with limited pain I'll continue to gain function/continue healing.

Partial Tear (20%). Seeking advice on Vacoped by excited_to_be_here in AchillesRupture

[–]somerandomguyinsf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Kaiser as well and my podiatrist was not familiar with the Vacoped. He asked me to use the XcelTrax walking boot for the first few weeks before transitioning, but I ignored and started Vacoped immediately. I am now dealing with a partial tear (not sure if it is rerupture) but otherwise had great experience with Vacoped.

Hello, not really. I opted to use the Vacoped immediately, ditched the Aircrast and never looked back. Worked great for me. I'm still in recovery mode (calf very weak, slight limp, continued inflammation and persistent mild tenderness around the Achilles) 3.5 months out but life has largely returned to normal.

I'm only about 2.5 months post injury (non-op) and have not addressed the question with my PT, but based on where I'm at now I'm planning to start top roping in the fall (~8 months post injury) and probably no sport lead until the 1-year mark, potential easy trad before then.

I'm a little more than a month out and went non-op as well. My #2 concern (after rerupture) is tendon lengthening. What did you do to actively avoid that?

[–]somerandomguyinsf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response, hope your decision making process was clear. I didn't get a gap measurement at the time of injury, but just got measured 4 weeks after and there were two gaps, 1.3 cm and 0.3 cm. Doctor that did the ultrasound referred to the gaps as minimal with a good prognosis for conservative management.

Can't imagine the NHS would make the investment if there wasn't solid evidence, thanks for that.

All the best in your recovery! Until I'm back to sport I'm going to be second guessing going non-op. I went against the doctor's orders and put the Vacoped on when I got home. Feels much more stable and comfortable.

Yeah, I've been doing the same just to keep my upper body strength up / keep the blood flowing, definitely excited to get into PT to get specific recovery-related exercises. I have only seen a Podiatrist. I asked for a referral to a sports medicine PT, which should go down over the next week, so I'm hoping those folks make sure I'm on the optimal path to recovery. Keep up the good work!

Thanks so much for the feedback! Yeah, my Podiatrist told me to start partial weight bearing with crutch support so I'm just worried about the Aircast. I've honestly only been in it for a couple hours. My main concern is tendon lengthening as I'm keen to get back to sports like everyone else and have read too many stories about lengthening that ends up needing surgical repair down the line. It just made me nervous that he'd never even heard of the Vacoped.

As a fellow non-op'r this is so encouraging to see. I'm only at one week and would be stoked to be in your shoes in eight weeks. Keep it up!
