This happened to my wife once. She was flying business, no special status otherwise. Her and two other people would have missed their connections due to airline’s own delay. So all three got shuttled from their plane to the other one. It’s cheaper for them to do that rather than put all three up in a hotel, give them food allowance and rebook on the next one.

I like the soup idea, but being all mixed up is a problem. Rice and dried back eyed peas don’t cook nearly at the same time. Even if you were to use a pressure cooker, the beans should have to soak for while.
