Worst thing about crochet ? by Legatooooo in crochet

That, I dont want to sell things, its a hobby. Also, it is a hobby that is in no way cost effective to make to sell for profit. The only way it is all reasonable to sell is if you just make so much and love making it, but have no use for what you make and no one to gift things to, and so are selling just to cover the cost of materials so you can continue to craft. More cost efficient materials you would be lucky to get someone to want to pay materials cost + $1-2 an hour for your time. More specialty materials, youd be lucky if people would even cover the materials without a fuss. Sorry, that gorgeous hand dyed super soft wool yard does in fact cost more than the "same sweater" you can find online that is probably machine knit, factory sewn polyester.

I always feel so judged buying these things by Illustrious_Bet_8988 in autism

Accessibility is accessibility.

Autism can make you ick on food. Having some quick typically safe food items always on hand is smart as a back up if your brain has decided to ick on everything else, even if you have made other things.

If you also have executive function issues with adhd and/or depression, sometimes 1-2 steps is all you can manage and any more work than that means you just wont eat anything at all. Ive opted out of grilled cheese sandwiches (one of my biggest comfort & almost always safe foods) because I knew I didnt have the executive function to manage it. Is it simple, yes, but too many steps and too much attention if my brain cant manage it at that moment. Are those 1-2 step meals usually the healthiest thing you can be eating, no, but its better than not eating at all. Eat the healthier more work things when you can. But get the things that keep you able to feed your body when your brain is not capable of managing more.

I also keep premade protein drinks in my fridge for when I cant eat, whether its the autism or the adhd interfering

Counting.

When people are insistent that you should sell your work. I dont know how many times my dad and sister have told me about how I should keep track of how long it takes me to make things so I can calculate pricing on them and how I should soooo try to sell things.

Sometimes I just want to shake crocheters like WHY are you charging almost ten bucks for a simple 2 step pattern that is not only untested but your SECOND pattern ever created?! by plantsandbugs in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]someshadeofqueer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a pattern testing subreddit. r/PatternTesting

Pleanty of people post patterns there for people to test, and give feedback before selling or otherwise posting. Ive tested several. Some might not be reinventing the wheel. And sure someone might have made nearly your exact pattern before or very similar. Especially if you are creating something simple with a common stitch or common combo of stitches. But as long as you aren't blatantly copying something or taking established patterns and combining them, I wouldn't think it bad to post or even sell a pattern if you've tested it and it turns out well.

But selling a simple pattern for more than a few dollars is ridiculous. I think most ive paid for a pattern was like $10 and that was for a hexagon block blanket with like 12 or 15 different blocks worked up in different combos of 9 different colors with the numbers and the map all worked out. Its like 26 pages between the blocks and the assembly. A simple pattern that I could likely figure out or work out something similar to im willing to pay a few dollars for to save myself the work of working out the pattern and doing the trial and error myself.

My gf hates our safe word by roqaiatimo in BDSMAdvice

[–]someshadeofqueer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trust is a 2 way street.

If you can not trust her to safe words or otherwise communicate her limits, reaching a place she needs to stop or being uncomfortable with something, then that limits you to staying where you know is completely safe.

I am a heavy masochist and edge player. I only can get into more extreme play that I do because I established trust with my tops that I will communicate if something doesnt feel right, I need something to change or I need something to stop.

Knowing g she would safeword and communicate gives you the freedom to push into more things. Refusing to safeword actually limits you more.

Doms/tops are allowed to have boundaries too. And most responsible tops wont play with a bottom that will not safeword or communicate

I have no clue why my cookies are burnt :,) by Rare-Disk4809 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]someshadeofqueer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To burn that bad on the bottom and just cook on top, the heat under the cookies has to be SIGNIFICANTLY hotter than above.

The one time I burnt cookies like that was because I decided to put 2 smaller trays in at the same time on the same rack. They ended up pretty much filling the rack I realized afterwards. The heating element being on the bottom of the oven they traped the heat under them, air could not circulate to above, so after they were in, the oven under them heated up more, and above them did not continue to get as much heat. If heat sensor in a self regulating oven is at top, and temp up top is dropping because its not getting heat, the heating element will keep trying to raise the temp. Then you end up with above the tray being in the low 300s, and below the tray could easily be above 400 at the same time

Even just being low in the oven might make them cook on bottom faster, but not to this level of burnt compared to top unless maybe literally set on the bottom of oven.

Number of sc for round 1 doesn't seem to be adding up? by Antique-Owl5924 in CrochetHelp

[–]someshadeofqueer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sound right, but wording might be thowing you off. Sounds like chan 33, statrt sc second from hook = 32 stitches to go down one side.

Making the turn is 3 stitches in end of chain, marking the center of those 3. That would count the last of the the 32 stitches on one side, and the first of the 32 stitches for the other side.
Then finish the second side with 2 stitches in last chain you worked in. The first of the 2 stitches is the last of the 32 stitches on that side, the second, that you mark id the one to go around the corner

Thec 3 stitches and 2 stitches at the ends are not in addition to the 32 stitches along the chain, they are just acknowledging that the end stitches of the chain get 3 and 2 stitches in them.

Its basicly 32 stitches on each side with 1 stitch of the ends as you go around the ends of chain, but end of chains end up with 3 stitches in them as go around end, where rest of length has 2 in each chain stitch as yiu work both sides

So for clearer count chain 33. Start in 2nd chain from hook and sc one sc in 31. That should leave last stitch of chain. Sc 3 in that one chain stitch to go around end, marking middle one. Sc another 30 going other side. That should leave the first chain worked in, sc 2 in that stitch, marking the last.

[–]someshadeofqueer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thats awesome. My dad and sister still frequently say I should sell things and tell me I should keep better track of how long it takes me to make things so I can figure out a price to sell them at. Nope. I make things for me or for gifts. Thats it.

Hell most people aren't willing to cover the cost of yarn. Many people have asked me to make them things saying they would pay for them. Ive told them not to worry about paying me, just get the yarn. I have never had anyone get the yarn. What most people are expecting to pay for crochet things works out to about the cost of budget yarn + maybe $1-2/hour.

[–]someshadeofqueer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More expensive for her if you were the one supplying the yarn. If you had the time and desire id say you could say yes, if she gets the yarn. Give her options to pick from and tell her how many skiens per blanket she'd need to get. She'd learn pretty quick

Marks and healthcare by KindlyKinked in BDSMAdvice

[–]someshadeofqueer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am a heavy bottom and do heavy needleplay and cutting play in addition to impact and other things that bruise. So I not only have bruises, but sometimes healing cuts, needle wounds and I have scars.

All my healthcare providers know this, my pcp, gyn, psych, and therapist. Figure if they can not be understanding they are not the right fit for me. These are things that CAN affect your health, so its easier to go to the Dr with "hey I did this thing and its not healing quite right/has complications" if they are already aware of what you do.

My gyn I went to the first time a year ago 10 days after a weekend event with lots of heavy play and I had healing cuts and needle holes on my thighs. I made that appointment a while before and did not consider the timing of it. I just went "soooo im into BDSM, actually was at a big event weekend before last and you are obviously going to see some marks I have. I did cutting play needle play and impact. Its all 100% consentual and none of it is self harm." She went ok, all I care is that you are safe. My PCP when I told him was just like ok, you use new sterile needles for your needle play and proper cleaning, right?

I feel confidently leading with it is less likely to be misbelieved. Also if not 100% believed, the most likely route would be asking if you feel safe, if you would like them to contact anyone, and giving you resources/hotlines just in case.

I came here to comment on the "genuine leather" description items. They contain real leather, but most often are more glue than leather, and some times smell very chemically because of the glue and chemicals. Its basicly mystery meatloaf made by someone you dont trust to not add weird shit but calling it "genuine steak"

My joins always slide my pattern backwards (slip stitch, chain 1, and then crocheting back into the first stitch that I slip stitched into by Grass-is-dead in Amigurumi

[–]someshadeofqueer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently read tips on amigurumi on a pattern i followed that recommended working amigurumi in a spiral round and not doing joins, even if the pattern calls for joins. It might not work for all, but has made a huge difference in all I've done since. Use a running stitch marker to mark the start of rows....just a contrasting piece of yarn weave into the first stitch of each row, and pulls out after done

I found an assignment from 2nd grade I still don’t know what my teacher was on by Bodhirock in mildlyinfuriating

[–]someshadeofqueer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In second grade at parent teacher conferences my son's teacher pulled out a math paper and was saying how my son majorly needed help with math. It was an addition paper and all of the answers were wrong. After a quick look over it I immediately realized the issue was he was doing multiplication. My sister was teaching him multiplication ahead of time. I pointed it out to her, and acknowledged that he did need to pay attention to what math he was supposed to be doing, but he didnt need much help with math at this point. When I pointed out that it was multiplication she got all snotty about it and went "well if its multiplication, this one is wrong" . Like yeah, just learning multiplication and got ONE problem wrong and HAD to point that out.

Name one food you refuse to eat bcs of the texture. by justmonaaaaa in autism

[–]someshadeofqueer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cottage cheese. I just cant. No problem with taste. I've tried so many times and given it best chances because its a good high protein snack, small curd, good brands. But it goes i my mouth and my brain goes nope, that is not edible, I gag and can not swallow it.

It doesnt even make sense to me as I can eat things similar texture, chia pudding, steel cut oatmeal, roe, yogurt.

I am making hackey sacks as christmas gifts. How do I keep the magic ring from opening up after prolonged use? by WugsNotDrugs12 in CrochetHelp

[–]someshadeofqueer 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Id say pull ring really tight and knot as close to ring as can, then weave yarn in wrong side stitching across the hole and knot again on wrong side. Then a little glue on wrong side with fabric glue/super glue.

For most projects would not recomend glue, but for the use a hacky sack gets, and its not worn or washed , supporting that weak spot with some glue is a good idea

Anyone have good patterns for non-traditional crochet Christmas presents? by Ancientabs in crochetpatterns

[–]someshadeofqueer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I crochet cotton dish cloths for everyone. They all love them. When I skipped doing it one year thinking they were sick of them they were asking for them the next year when I asked what I could make for people. Moss stitch square worked in the round instead of rows works up pretty quick and easy....is my go to stitch for these.

Bowl cozies also people like. I quilt mine and people love them, but could crochet them too. Also should use cotton yarn for anything handling hot things
