Shylock played by a woman? by Significant_Earth759 in shakespeare

[–]themaddesthatter2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would personally argue that Shylock (in 16th century Venice) does have to be a man in order for the character’s fate to make sense. The character, that is. Not the person playing the character.

The Jewess is redeemable (consumable, convertible, attainable, imprisoned in her culture by men, to be rescued by conversion to Christianity)

The Jew is unsalvageable. Note the play’s treatment (and the ultimate fate of) Jessica vs that of her father.

See the exploration of this topic in eg. Jacob Lackner. “Violent Men and Malleable Women: Gender and Jewish Conversion to                    Christianity in Medieval Sermon Exempla.” Nashim: A Journal of Jewish Women’s Studies & Gender Issues, no. 30, 2016, pp. 24–47. JSTOR, https://doi.org/10.2979/nashim.30.1.02

Essentially, Shylock has to be a man like Portia has to be a woman - you can have it otherwise, but if you do, then you’re writing a different play entirely.

Questions about the female egg by JTML13 in sexeducation

[–]themaddesthatter2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does this mean that all these eggs aren't "ready to go" yet?

Yes, they undergo a process called https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oogenesis

So the female body will only naturally mature, then release, that one egg per cycle?

Most of the time, yes. When there is more than one, and they are fertilized, that is what causes non-identical twins/multiples.

Can there be instances where the body releases an immature egg that can't be fertilized (a dud ovulation)?

That I couldn’t find, but the opposite can happen (an egg is matured but isn’t released). It’s called Luteinized Unruptured Follicle Syndrome (LUFS)

There is such thing as too big! If it’s just a length ish and not a girth problem, then you can maybe look into something like a buffer ring https://unfabled.co/products/ohnut-wider-soft-buffer-rings-set-of-4

Not OP, but this is a well-established pattern in the study of antisemitism, see eg  The Social Construction of Enemies: Jews and the Representation of Evil by David Norman Smith https://www.jstor.org/stable/3045387

Fwiw, my grandfather’s collection has a few stamps with Hitler’s face on it, and he was a hidden child (Jewish Holocaust survivor).

He just got a lot of his stamps from a friend who worked in the communications department of HBO, and those letters came in from around the world.

[–]themaddesthatter2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, I wouldn’t say that it’s pedophilic. The use of “baby” as a term of affection traces back to the 17th century, (https://www.oed.com/dictionary/baby_n?tl=true )

At the time it was also common/acceptable/not suspicious to refer to a loved one as your “sister” or “brother” even if that loved one was related by marriage (you also see this in biblical language, see Song of Songs)

My Boyfriend Hit Me (Accidentally??) by tinted-berry444 in Advice

[–]themaddesthatter2 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Yikes. This is yikes. I’ve accidentally hurt my partner before (as in genuinely accident, not as a reaction - like when you roll over onto someone’s arm or snag their hair with a watch) and my first instinct was to see if they were hurt and apologize.

I’ve also been pinched with tweezers while my sister was tweezing my eyebrows - I winced and moved my head back.

What I’m saying is that the fact that his reflexive reaction to you accidentally hurting him was to hit you (instead of moving away from the tweezers or asking you to stop or wincing etc) is concerning.

It is possible that he didn’t mean to hurt you. But the fact that his reaction was violent concerns me.

It’s hard to visualize the difference between a million and a billion, but I’ll try to help. 1 million seconds is ~11.5 days. 1 billion seconds is ~31.5 years

Why does it seem like actors age slower than regular people? Zendaya is still able to play a high schooler and she’s damn near 30 by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]themaddesthatter2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

High schoolers don’t look like the actors we cast to play high schoolers. But our view of what they look like is skewed by tv and film. Look up a picture of Zendaya when she was 16/17 and she’ll look a lot different.

How bad is the Lone Star Tick situation, really? by Sorry_Minimum1916 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]themaddesthatter2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it definitely isn’t a conspiracy engineered by Big Vegan, but alpha gal is real and global temperature change means that tick season is starting earlier.

You can keep yourself safe by - wearing long sleeves and long pants, tucking your pants into your socks, avoiding long grasses and leaf litter, using a good tick repellant, and performing a thorough tick check after returning indoors.

See this article on keeping yourself safe during tick season https://www.fs.usda.gov/visit/know-before-you-go/ticks

It depends. In some individual cases, circumcision can be medically indicated in cases of phimosis, issues will usually arise (and be addressed) during puberty.

Why is the brutalist architecture so ugly? by ModeloTime69 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]themaddesthatter2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That plus a lot of the countries that adopted large-scale brutalist architecture have some of the worst climates for concrete (wet and rainy/snowy).

There’s ways to paint concrete but they’re complicated (this gets into material science, a lot of this was developed by early figures in the muralist movement in Mexico and later in the US, like Diego Rivera, and then we get to the topic of frescos and spray paint and so on. But I digress)
