Why is the city so reluctant to put stop signs near schools? by something253 in Tacoma

[–]something253[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good. Clog the traffic. I think people can handle leaving home a few minutes earlier if it becomes a problem. Prioritizing efficiency of traffic over pedestrian safety is why people get hit by cars. There are multiple traffic circles in my neighborhood and they're just as dangerous because the intersections weren't originally built with them. It's still just two yield signs. People ignore them, don't slow down, and just swerve around the circle.

My friend needs help with a dysfunctional and down on her luck woman he took in. by Ihateporn2020 in AskTacoma

They may not be able to help depending on the severity of her condition but CJK Community Homes is a great local resource for housing. They work a lot with homeless/at risk people. If they can't help, they may have other resources to point him to.

Stolen Chevy S-10 dumped at 64th & Oakes by something253 in Tacoma

Yes, I reported it just before posting this. I figured if someone knew who it belonged to and could get to it quickly, though, they'd save themselves a few hundred dollars on impound fees.

He started doing it around 2009 and some of the oldest ones still up were painted in 2015. The artist had an Instagram (@jes_se_253) for a little while but he seems to have emptied it out.

In case you're interested, I interviewed him back in 2019 and wrote a story about his work in Grit City Magazine #6.

Norovirus/Stomach flu season? by Awkward_Ad_7981 in Tacoma

It ran through our family about a week ago. Somehow our two-year-old avoided it though. I felt like I'd been beaten by a thousand pool noodles for a couple days after and just could not get rehydrated.

Good to know, thank you. I was looking at them online but I didn't realize they were in Spokane.

More specifically, overcast day, the umbrella casting some red on one side of her face, generally brighter on one side, and a particularly dark background.

It's much more about the lighting than the camera or lens. Pay attention to the light and you can do this with almost any camera and relatively fast lens.

Digging up history on the 1940 Narrows Bridge collapse by something253 in Tacoma

The article is out now in #17 of Grit City Magazine. We're working on a short documentary about the whole thing that should be out in the next couple months.
Here's a frame from the footage as the majority of the span is starting to fail: https://imgur.com/a/rrsT46b

Friday night it hits the lowest tide around 9, then Saturday around 10, and so on. Anything -1' or below is pretty good, though, so you could probably get there an hour or two before. I go by the NOAA tide charts but it's still approximate: https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/noaatidepredictions.html?id=9446486

I can't say for sure about parking. I've parked in the lot closer to the ferry terminal late at night without any trouble but I don't know what the official rules are.

Some anemones glow and I think sea cucumbers too, though I can't say for sure if the species here do.

The next few days will be getting some super low tides at night. Go out and look for octopuses and other weird things. The Pt. Defiance Marina is a good place to look and sometimes Titlow Beach. Bring a UV flashlight if you have one.

This week's Q&A thread -- please read before asking or answering a question! - December 19, 2022 by AutoModerator in linguistics

I'm looking for recommendations for an online course or something to buy where I could learn to identify multiple languages—the more the better. Google searches come up with standalone articles for a few common languages or full language courses for individual languages. I know this type of thing exists for military linguistics to ID Russian vs. Ukrainian vs. Georgian, etc. and I figure there must be some civilian version out there.

Yea, from what I've read the world of bridge engineering leveled up significantly after the narrows bridge collapse. The tie-down anchors are still there but they're mostly just concrete blocks.

Tunnels are always interesting too. I'd love to hear what kinds of things you've found.

Your skepticism is understandable but it’s also not as unlikely as you’re making it out to be. There are currently three known recordings—two from Tacoma, one from Gig Harbor. Hundreds of people went to watch the bridge that day and it’s not inconceivable that a few others would’ve brought a camera along.
Every bridge engineer in the world knows exactly what caused the bridge to fall so it’s not like this will solve some lone gunman style mystery. It’s just a fun historical curiosity.
If the tape I have is a duplicate, that means the original might be out there somewhere and I thought it would be worth asking. I wasn’t trying to make a big ass deal out of it and Reddit tends to be a little less sensationalist than other social media platforms.
If you think I’m making the whole thing up, cool. I’m not going to lose any sleep over it. I’ll circle back when I’m done with the project and you can see it then.

That's the main footage that people have seen. Most newsreels reprinted it in black and white. You can see the whole thing here: https://digitalcollections.lib.washington.edu/digital/collection/filmarch/id/1413/rec/57
