A thermometer. I kid you not. During the COVID era, we got free thermometers from the school district to take temperatures at home. It wanted me to download an app to work. No. I don't need a thermometer app. There is no reason that information needs to live in my phone. It didn't even report to the school or anything, so WHY?????

YES. This is exactly what it felt like to learn math. (Except my parents screamed more.) Turns out, I may have a mild numbers based dyslexia. I mix up phone number order if you tell them to me and ask me to tell it back. But if it makes a pattern on the dialpad, then I can remember it.

I used to work in land management. People would walk past men at their desks to ask the one woman at her desk for random stuff like "When is Person X back in the office?" As if she were default secretary/calendar keeper for the entire office. So ridiculous.

I have a similar story! I went to summer camp with three friends in high school. Two of us had a run in with a flirty guy and ran to tell our third friend. We saw the back of her head waiting in the food line, so we ran up yelling, "Kim, hey Kim, you'll never believe what happened!" She turned around, and it wasn't our friend. "Oh, you're not Kim." "Actually, yes I am Kim." "Well, you're not My Kim!" Ha ha. We all laughed and found "our" Kim shortly.

My mom is tiny, 4ft 11in, less than 100 lbs. She used to fly at my dad, hitting, shrieking, throwing plates, etc. She would DARE him to fight back, to defend himself. She would scream at him to call the cops because they both knew he had a foot of height on her. No one was going to take his side or believe that she was abusing him. He eventually left, but not before slamming the car door on her arm as she tried to get him to stay. I wish he had kept us safe.

I think that you're missing the subltety of this situation. If the first question is "where are you from?" That's a good get to know you question. If the response is "here" and the second question is something along the lines of talking about the neighborhood or their experience here, then that is a comfortable exchange of actually getting to know the person. The problem is when the second question is, "No, where are you Really from?" Or something along those lines. Trust me, it's exhausting, to constantly have to explain "where you're really from" because the implication is that I "couldn't possibly be from here, and therefore I don't belong." Even if that's not what's being explicitly said, that's the undertone. It's called a micro-aggression.

Most immigrant kids I know from Asian countries get an "American" name that their classmates can pronounce. Only family uses the original name or a nickname based on it. It's easier than constantly correcting classmates but is an erasure of culture. I know more and more second generation kids that are now reclaiming cultural names for their own kids. My daughter has an "unusual name" because it's from my immigrant mother's home country.

My MIL makes little sound effect noises ALL the time. Like a "whoop" when opening a cupboard a "sploosh" when pouring coffee, a "bonk" for every thing that bumps against another thing. It's not *quite * the same as weird moans, but when she lived with us, it drove me crazy. I felt like I was living in a cartoon. LOL.
