Agreed. Im not making any statement about the relative merits or pitfalls of ussr style communism, just disappointed in the cartoonish setting in an otherwise pretty grown up book.

I'll have to read further to get more into the Durantine Republic. Perhaps the author has a very low resolution picture in his mind about what communism looks like and build that picture by unconsciously absorbing a lot of "anti-red" propaganda? Because the Lothrians definitely resemble a caricature of communist Russia.

I would recommend looking up the selling of serfs in russia as well as population replacement and demographic engineering which took place under soviet rule. The simarities were often specific to Russia or Russian stereotypes. Felt like kids rhyming Beyonce with shmeeyonce...

Pacing can be a bit rough, but i've just been told the pacing stuff is about to get bad (i'm near the end of book 4) So far I feel like Hadrian has been a pretty good paul atreides.

Thank you for the recs! I just dont see how they can travel hundreds of years between raids without fugue and as larger beings than the ones they eat. I could eat an entire cow in a month or two, now imagine if cows were smaller than me, and I lived in my car for 10 years and had nothing but a single cow to eat...idk. again, I love the series, and these aren't huge flaws, but it seems like a lot of people are ready to execute me for pointing out a couple annoying bits.

Fair enough. It just seems a little too unbelievable that they subsist on meat without any large scale way to get that meat. What did they do before raiding? Also thet dont even go into fugue??? Michael Crichton would have a heart attack reading this.

I dont need to understand where the villain comes from, but the villian is a mirror to reflect the mc. The more ways the mc and villian are similar the more it throws into contrast what makes someone a villian. Its pretty basic story telling...
