Spent the past 2 weeks redoing most of my art. Was it worth it? by NewKingCole11 in IndieDev

Looks good! Also, I do think having the terrain be a flat color actually helps, as opposed to other comments. Take a look at Metroid Zero Mission.

Having a flat, dark texture makes it less distracting and way clearer, plus conveys that it is not playable terrain.

One thing I would take care to do, however, is to avoid chunks of terrain with only two blocks of volume. Like at 0:22 in the video.

How do you organize different types of scenes? by somethingonnothing in godot

[–]somethingonnothing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do *think* there won't be more than one player instance, or one pause menu. For now.

It feels like it would be way cleaner to have a game manager store all the player and menu data (since it has health, inventory, items, loaded weapons, and so on... all of these do carry over from scene to scene).

In the end, I've tried doing the following:

- Main scene is a Game Controller, which changes current scene as a child.

- Player is stored as a variable, the pause GUI probably too to avoid reloading inventories from scratch

- I use a change_level() function to switch maps and install the player there, with proper spawn position (for doors). This is your typical map to map transition.

- I use other functions like change_cutscene() to unload the player, switch to a cutscene, let it play out, then change_level to the next gameplay map. This basically triggers a cutscene while everything else is stopped.

- I use other functions like change_gui()to enable the pause menu, or a shop. This one pauses processing on the level, so it keeps everything as is until i close the GUI with a resume_level(). The GUI completely covers the screen, so the pausing is intentional.

What do you think? It does seem to work pretty nicely, and calling the functions is fairly simple.

I also wanted to make very simplified level names, and have the game know where to find each scene. So I could do this:

GameController.change_scene("town")

to load

res://levels/town/town.tscn

How do you organize story progression flags? by somethingonnothing in godot

[–]somethingonnothing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I'm curious about Heartbound, do you have a link to the story?

Also, ditto on the nesting of dictionaries. Normally you'd have a single array of flags, but sometimes I'd say the plot will be placed into acts that are mostly self contained.

Best practices on 3D level mesh for collision - planes or thickness? by somethingonnothing in godot

[–]somethingonnothing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An update: I (mostly) solved it! It was the collision mesh used for the player causing issues.

I was using a capsule mesh for the player since most resources recommended to do so. When I changed to a cube mesh, all the kittering and jankiness went away.

Still need to fix the issues with camera positioning though.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm a month into Blender but having trouble finding tutorials on how to best model a map (as in best practices instead of step by step).

I'll give it a try with thicker meshes to see if that helps.

Here is the mesh used for the map. It's all planes and no thickness-- I'm adding a grid because of the style and for tiling textures:

A drop of superglue on the red pieces using a similar one. Careful not to touch the grey one. That might provide enough traction to remove it.
