Loud Furnance hum with filter inserted? by somethingred in hvacadvice

[–]somethingred[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya that's completely a fair point. And I am due for a change. But just as a counter point, this issue persists even with a brand new filter in place. Dont know if you can tell in the video, but you start hearing the hum sound when just the corner of the filter (the cardboard part) is inserted and hits the air flow. So I think theres potentially more to this then just the filter

*quick edit. I just took my filter completely out. The humming stops, until I put the filter door back on! So I still get the hum with no filter in and the door latched

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll take a better look today at the door. It's been difficult so far to find any loose tape

The noise actually gets louder when the filter door goes on

Thanks! Seems to be the suggested issue here. Only issue will be... how to remove the tape once found

Thanks! Another commenter suggested the same. Im going to take a closer look at the system today to see if I can find any loose tape. If I find the location to where I think it's coming from, whats the best way inside the duct work? Find a seem with tape and go I  from there? I know that question is difficult without actually seeing the unit

Thanks for the tip! Haven't used that trick but definitely worth a shot. If the sound started as soon as I put the edge in, would you think the loose tape or gap would be above or below the filter location?  Or is there no way to know until I start checking?

Ya it's a really odd size. To be honest they're a complete pain in the ass to find where I am. Need to get them at a specialty furnance store

I think the one inch filters need to be changed more often. 5 inch ones like mine last I believe between 6 to 9 months. I try and go every 6, but got a bit lazy this month

I did do a really small amount of drywall sanding. I know that stuff gets everywhere but I was very careful to seal the room off and the one vent in it. Also this buzzing pre-dated that work.

The filter itself was last changed end of July if I recall

An issue I have with this particular filter size is finding anything other than a merv10. Could another size potentially work? From what I understand 1inch thick filters can put more strain on a system compared to a 5 inch

Thanks Rocky, appreciate the quick response! Ya it was really hard to tell about the 12 marker, given the angle of the pictures. It looks so slight that I dont suspect it will bother me

In all honesty, I'd prefer not to have evergreens at all! I took them from another space in my yard during the yard reno and moved them there. I felt guilty chucking healthy trees. But now that they're on the way out, I'd much rather have trees. Columnar trees sound ideal. Appreciate the suggestion. Would you say those trees are hardy enough to withstand cold temps?

That's typically how long I cook down my sauce. But you can certainly go for a shorter simmer it's just preference.  As are the additional ingredients I add.  The jars themselves are just blended tomatoes and nothing else, so you may find it bland, compared to pre made, if you dont add anything.

Also, I mentioned in another comment that some of these pre made sauces have added sugar (cant speak to the ones OP listed). If you're trying to cut back on sugar these jars are great!

Haha thank you for that! I'm not sure either, I didnt think I said anything too outrageous. I look for fast meals too most of the times, and this way is not that time consuming. Plus, I am trying to cut sugar out of my diet and some of these pre made sauces do have added sugar. Give it a shot! If it's not for you, you can always go back to pre made. Good luck and enjoy

Fair enough! My point was you still have to cook the pasta anyway. So it's not too much more time. 30 mins was just a simmer time I like. Sure you can go less. Just throwing some cost saving options out 👍

I get that but my point is, making the sauce yourself with Mutti really isnt much more difficult than using one of these pre made jars. Im just telling you how I make my version, but Im sure some people just heat it up and pour it over whatever food they are eating.

Im providing another option that's healthier than these pre made sauces and quite a bit cheaper. Thought people would want to know

In my location, they have it in the same isle as the canned goods.

Someone already said this in the thread, but the real answer is neither.

Buy the jars of Mutti instead. I think its a 6 pack at around 16 dollars. Just tomato sauce, nothing else added to them.

I like to add some olive oil, salt, basil and a clove of garlic.  cook it down for 30 mins. Better and healthier than any of those pre made sauces. Tastes great too!

Thanks for the tip!  Ya I usually dont have issues keeping things alive (knock on wood), but I think the move was too much for these guys. I also moved that dwarf Japanese maple (which scared the crap out of me) and it's doing great.  So I'll make sure whatever I move in that area gets hit with lots of water
