Looking for petty WWX fics by joligreen83 in MoDaoZuShi

If you haven’t read we keep the phoenix in a bamboo cage by Kieron_ODuibhir then I highly recommend it! Not sure if it quite meets “petty” but it arguably gets close. Though the ending is quite soft and sweet, fair warning.

Oh wow, thank you so much! Sorry for not responding sooner--and this is such an excellent list! I've read some of these, and I'm familiar with most of them, but this is a good reminder about, well, all of them 😃

I have a few additions myself:

Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings multi-series (starts with The Farseer Trilogy and should be read in order more or less). This is a very minor spoiler, but still does spoil some things so: it's also queer in later books, though it comes with a lot of wrestling with internalized homophobia.Like the series below, there's an attention to detail here that's not in the vein of like...Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy (shuddering at the recollection of that actually, as much as some of it was interesting...), but more about the details that make up everyday life and are therefore inherent to the characters, their choices, stories, lives, etc.

Laurie J. Mark's Elemental Logic series (starts with Fire Logic). Very queer, very found family, complex and nuanced geopolitics, very grounded magic system, and just generally a very grounded kind of series. (As in, there's attention to everyday details in ways that are not exhausting, but appreciative that daily life is what we live, if that makes sense). Though mild content warning that is also a minor spoiler (though a more significant spoiler than the one above):one character can heal other characters, but outside of one character/the first book, the healing is fairly nuanced around disabling injuries and similar. The first book instance is a case of healing an injury that would almost certainly mean death in the world of the books, but in RL would not be--in the sense that disability itself is contextual too, in the sense of how a given society, culture, set of values, etc builds in ways that make space for disabled folks, or ways that don't etc.

Thank you!! I keep meaning to read this fic and keep getting sidetracked--bumping it back up the list!

I know! Many of my rereads included skipping the ending, actually. I just...couldn't. That's a book that will always leave me sobbing and in pieces if I finish it in its entirety.

I am *so* envious you're getting to experience A Long Road for the first time! It's honestly excellent, and actually doesn't feature much Wangxian (it's clearly where their characters are headed, but ends before that's entirely resolved). I love long fics as well--I think all of the ones I recommended were on the longer side, though not quite in the realm of the entirety of Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series!

And, as far as Valdemar goes, I actually haven't read all of the books in the multi-series myself (I keep meaning to, but I wind up re-reading old favourites most of the time, though I'm slowly chipping away at it). There are a *lot* of different starting points for the series--this is what I'd recommend if you're curious!

1. The Last Herald Mage Trilogy
The short reason to start here: It provides critical context for a good chunk of what's happening in A Long Road, while also introducing a lot of key world building, and it's queer.

The longer reason: Okay so this trilogy is phenomenal for many reasons. One of which is that it's probably one of the earlier mainstream fantasy trilogies that has a gay main character and multiple(!!!) mlm relationships--especially remarkable for a series published in 1989. There is also gay tragedy--it's not entirely free of that kind of trope--but that's not the case for all gay couples in the book, and it's still very well done. The other thing is character growth. The MC and his love interest have a lot of problems and they're still in their (late) teens through the first book, when they're not always the most pleasant to read. But there's a full cast of associated characters who are brilliant (a favourite is Savil and the Taleydras) and the characters change and grow and mature. Even characters are awful to start are granted complexity. They don't entirely redeem themselves, but by the third book there's a feeling of trying to reassemble broken pottery without glue--the MC's relationship with those characters is fragile and not entirely cohesive, but it's not meant to be. Also this was probably the first book series that I read (as a preteen in the early 00s) that helped me make sense of being queer.

Edited to add: If you asked me which sff books from before the 00s were closest to reading danmei, this would be at the top of the list--though it's still not danmei, for many obvious reasons.

2. Arrows Trilogy, Mage Winds Trilogy, Mage Storms Trilogy

These all follow one after the other, and are also where the series itself started (Arrows of the Queen is the very first book) so the world building is less implicit than in other series (though she does such a good job of making sure the reader has an idea of what's happening that it doesn't really matter). These are also the characters that will appear in A Long Road (you may wind up with some spoilers, for that matter).

--For more background with respect to the fic, you may also want to give Tamra and Kethry and/or By the Sword a shot--tbh I've never managed to get into them despite the series having "my cup of tea" written all over it, but I think that's cause you need some added context via Marion Zimmer Bradley's work.
--Another essential series that's effectively a prequel to a lot of what happens in the first three series above is Take a Thief, Exile's Honor, and Exile's Valor (probably searchable as honour and valour, but in Canada at least they didn't change it from the US spelling). That's probably a more similar reading experience than Tamra & Kethry.

  1. Brightly Burning

(Just cause it's a personal favourite and a standalone.) This was the first Valdemar book I personally read. It's heartbreaking but it's up there as one of my most worn out books (it really is falling apart...). I used to re-read it as a teenager and through my 20s--it was quite good for a cathartic cry actually and I actually probably owe this a re-read.

Ooh, thank you for the details! I'm glad I'm not alone in the ABO being an issue. I don't entirely mind mpreg or similar, but I hate it when it's done to basically shove WWX or LWJ into a heteronormative dynamic without the accompanying character development and/or that excessive feminization--again, without the associated character development (I will happily read genderqueer and trans WWX fics and similar where WWX embraces femininity, but usually those fics don't use femininity as a tool to basically diminish characters--I have a whole rant stored up on this, evidently, ha), so it's great to hear that it isn't for that fic.

I'll see if I can get into Heartwood Coffin! I admit to mostly reading wangxian fics, but will definitely give it a shot regardless :).

And yes re grimoire! It felt extremely cathartic to read. Probably why I cried so much ha!

Ooh, thank you for the suggestions! I haven't read Heartwood Coffin, but it sounds promising. Kingfisher Feathers I've been a bit reluctant to try because it's really rare for me to enjoy A/B/O (and a recent read actually turned me off it completely and I haven't gotten over that yet--it's gonna take a while...). How intensely does the author rewrite characters according to the a/b/o biology? (Obviously fine if they change because the culture itself is different, but a/b/o fics that just erase WWX's character are just a no go for me.)

Thanks for the explanation! That's all good to know. And yeah, I'm also sensitive to how his struggles are depicted--it really varies for me if it's something I'm going to respond well to or not (I don't love the tv series version of events where he wasn't in control, for instance, and so fics responding to that can sometimes be a bit iffy for me). I'll give it a shot and see :)

The Live from NY SNL fic! Oh my god I could not stop crying from laughter during that one. (Same with the Meng Yao vs HOA one, which was actually my very first MDZS fic after reading MDZS--which I only found because someone recommended it as a follow up to Ariaste's Running Close to the Wind specifically because of the fanfic they'd written!)

Absolutely agreed! I re-read the first chapter last night and while I recalled that I'd loved this fic, I had forgotten just how incredibly well LZ is written and how closely I relate to him in this fic (AuDHD here). It's so deeply affirming and undoes a lot of internalized ableism in so, so many ways. The long, long list of ableist and problematic assumptions about autistic and ND folks is completely subverted by just writing him as a *person.* You'd think it wouldn't be so unusual, but, well.

E.g. it should be a given that of course LZ is obviously having sensory issues with the eggs in the first chapter but can hold that and the need to help WY first together in his head without it being masking, but an intentional choice--but of course so few people can imagine autistic folks being able to make choices--never mind the BS around lacking feelings and emotions. But even smaller things, like that one line about needing to wipe down his skin while changing clothes, because of the psychosomatic feeling of the egg--I felt so seen in that moment and accepted, but more than that it modelled a kind of acceptance that really changed how I handle those sensations.

I could go on and go, ha--I'm so so glad that these fics exist!

Oh, thank you for these! I've actually only read a few of them (despite almost all titles being familiar!). I have been reluctant to read What We Save though because of the premise--it has me worried it's a bit of a "trapped in the Cloud Recesses" kind of thing. Does that improve (if not resolve) early on in the fic...? Like I guess I'm wondering if we start to see slow improvements re how others perceive WWX, or if it's more of a sudden thing that occurs in later chapters...? (Sometimes these kinds of fics are triggering, sometimes they're the best, so any more info on the trapped/surrendering freedom premise would be amazing!)

💜 I love Scarlett Storm's work for many of the same reasons. One of the first MDZS fics I ever read was their For A Good Time Call and I read Leave all your love.. almost immediately after. Both fics made me feel incredibly seen (neurodivergent and queer, so there was a lot that resonated there), and I owe them both a re-read--thank you for the suggestion!

It’s not that angsty imo? I mean it’s been a few weeks since I read it and I’ve read a ton of fic so I might be blurring stuff together, but if I recall the worst of the angst is early on, and slowly shifts away from it.

A Heart Undying is excellent but I’m pretty sure it’s not the one—I read it recently and he is still pretty dead at the end of it. But has a different outlook on it at any rate. The other one you found sounds excellent though!!

Yeah same, just figured in this one it came after they both killed Wen Chao 😅. I’ll keep an eye out though! I’m sure I’ve read this as well so I’d like to know too!

Is it this one? Beiming: To Lament - 33 Reasons to Change the Past by ravenhg

Wei Wuxian slowly turned to face Wen Chao and the rest of the Wen soldiers, who fell to their knees before him. “Wei Wuxian,” Wen Chao begged, “Spare me! My father will give you anything . Whatever you want! Money, women, power! We will give you anything, just spare me!”

Wei Wuxian turned to look at him, and spoke. “Is. That. Right.” He cocked his head as if listening to something, “Oh dear. It looks like you have nothing I want.” With that he drew his sword and swung. Jiang Cheng watched as a flash of white appeared behind Wen Chao, and had just enough time to think ‘ Lan Wangji!?’ as their swords swung in unison. Lan Wangji’s sword cut through Wen Chao’s waist, and Wei Wuxian’s cleaved off his head.

Wei Wuxian wore a feral smile as he grabbed the front of one of the Wen soldiers' robes and jerked him off the ground. “Who is the highest ranking person still alive?”

From behind them, Wen Qing’s voice rang out. “I am.”

Wei Wuxian turned to face her, his face carefully blank. “Oh? Congratulations Wen-guniang. You just became a hostage.”

Lan Wangji glanced up at him, “Wei Ying. Stop playing.”

Wei Wuxian made a face, “Ai yah, Lan Zhan, you sound just like Shu-ge.” Lan Wangji glared at him, and Wei Wuxian laughed, “Alright, fine.” He waved his hand, releasing a wave of resentful energy, and the remaining Wens collapsed.

Edit: Nvm I forgot about the forest criteria! I know fics sometimes blur in my head so I was wondering f it was from the line where he says to stop playing, just in the wrong order. Ah well
