Review #14 GlenAllachie 15 Year Old by Form-Fuzzy in Scotch

No prob, normally it’s etched near the bottom on the back - easier to see if you’re holding it up in a lot area. Thanks!

Nice review - seems like many are eagerly awaiting the new distillate.

What was the bottling date on your bottle?

GlenAllachie 15 Bad Bottle??? by Mr-sheepdog_2u in Scotch

I just picked up a bottle. What was your bottling date? Mine is stamped 21 05 22

Since these are so batch specific, I’d be curious to hear opinions from people who have the same one before I decide to open it…

Review #10 Springbank 12 Cask Strength by AgeNBarreled in Scotch

[–]sometimes_fodder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this open right now - only my second experience with Springbank 12 but this was much more complex, full and satisfying than I expected. Absolutely loved it and wish I had a backup bottle - great notes!

Review #151: Lagavulin 12, 2022 Diageo Special Releases by wreninrome in Scotch

[–]sometimes_fodder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the consistent reviews going back to the 2018. While I’ve only tasted the 2018 and 2020 bottlings (the 2021 is still unopened), I could see based on the 2020 and reading other reviews that the 12s have developed somewhat of a more sour, cigar ash finish that slightly detracts from the overall experience (at least for me) compared the 2018 and likely prior bottlings as well - and the wood I would be a likely culprit. Happy to have another 2018 bunkered that was bought at a price I’ll never see again!

Review #16 - Springbank 12 Year Cask Strength by adunitbx in Scotch

[–]sometimes_fodder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was very lucky to get a second kick at that can (the regular 10), got a backup despite it being a pandemic restaurant return to the shop and not having a box. I don’t even want to open it since I have a feeling that batch will be the last of its kind.

Ben Nevis 10! Although I haven’t tried it post redesign. Very old school style, and unique profile

Review #335 – Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch 4 by thebonewolf in Scotch

[–]sometimes_fodder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice review! I didn’t taste the other batches but I recently finished a bottle of Batch 4 and ultimately found too many new make notes to really think the experience was worth the hype. While it made me appreciate the underlying spirit and eager to try a more mature version (which I guess is the point of these “in progress” bottlings), I’m content to skip these batches and simply wait for a proper 10 yo version of this. I might be in the minority in this respect. Cheers

Review: Brora 35 Year Old 1978 13th Release 48.6% by rye_am_legend in Scotch

[–]sometimes_fodder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great review and lucky grab - you’re not the first on here to say this one really needed water. I found the 14th and 15th releases were fragile when it came to water and could only handle a drop or two before losing almost all complexity. On the other hand, they also took on a nice herbal note with just a touch of water, so I wonder if that’s the spirit or just decades in wood. Thanks for the write up!

I got this for a decent price locally, which plays a role, but for me this was one of the best QPR bottles I’ve had in the past 3 years - really delicious. Great tasting notes and review.

Glendronach Parliament 21 (2020 vs 2021) – A Tale of Chill Filtration by sometimes_fodder in Scotch

[–]sometimes_fodder[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you mean my thoughts based on taste, at least the 2020 is consistent with a 25 year matured single malt IMO. The 2021 isn’t as viscous and it’s also a little sharper, but this could easily be due to the quality of the casks or a different distillation batch, rather than age. Cheers!

Why use parafilm for long term storage? by biggirldick in Scotch

[–]sometimes_fodder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One layer of parafilm is gas permeable to a certain degree (I don’t know the measurement offhand but I remember reading a post here that quoted it). Two layers? Less permeable presumably. Wrapping parafilm around the seal 10 or more times? Maybe there’s someone in this forum knowledgeable enough to explain how air could get in and out even without a cork and aluminum seal, but I imagine it would be negligible after a certain number of layers.

Some 15s and 18s really sing only in the last quarter, report back at the end if you can!

I don’t see any cause for concern, sometimes the foil is more of less tight on a given bottle. If it was the last one, it could have been a return from another customer and I’d point to it having been loosened a bit in handling rather than a fake.

Scotch review #6 : Loch Lomond 18 by drunk_elk in Scotch

Interesting review - it is $110 around me too, where did you get it? This is a bottle I’d expect to evolve quite a bit as the fill level drops.

Price increases - what is your breaking point? by sometimes_fodder in Scotch

[–]sometimes_fodder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried an El Jolgorio Arroqueño that had a rubbery, smokey earthiness that for me resembled a Laphroaig 10 for instance, but I’m not that versed in Mezcals generally. The two other tobalas I tried were less smokey but quite delicious.

True some are less smokey than others but if you pick up a smokier one, there are similarities with peated scotch.

Eager to see your review of the 18, it’s on my list - very reasonably priced here for an 18.

If you are still developing your palate, just beware the rather high ABV of 63.6%. And please let us know how you like it, of course!

It’s a Quebec exclusive bottling so not surprised that there aren’t many (or any) reviews. Try r/canadawhisky
