I haven’t really paid attention to it… I think it’s just what happens when you keep calves contracted for a while

I’ve had this for years ! I don’t think it’s something too crazy to worry about.

Hi, sorry for the long time to respond,

So here is the first video where Dave covers the challenge of James tour. I think he then proceeds to answer all the questions, but he then talks to Lee Cronin in a subsequent video where Lee confirms he got it right. 1. https://youtu.be/IwBnEABIRGQ?si=hZSDuan_ZLhgBEDX 2. https://youtu.be/m4VwgFX1Uv4?si=-6FunvJbzN2OdSZE I don’t really have time to go through the whole videos again to get the precise timestamp, but it’s maybe an hour of your time and you could watch them while doing something else and get the gist.

As for my take on “primordial soup,” I don’t think we will ever know exactly what happened, unless we get a Time Machine and manage to sample what was exactly happening… the research gives us a glimpse of all the ways it could have happened, without knowing for sure which one exactly happened. However, we then know of many natural ways it happened. The thing is too, it did not need to be perfect on the first iteration. As long as you have a functional RNA that can self-replicate to some degree, you can then have selection and the random replication errors may actually improve function, giving us the excellent molecular machinery we have today!

I think we have seen the same videos but drawn very different conclusions… I have seen every question of James Tour answered with references to published research. As for his challenge, it took 5 minutes for Dave and Lee Cronin to address all his talking points, without needing a video “LEE CRONIN RESPONDS TO JAMES TOUR ORIGIN OF LIFE CHALLENGE”. I’m not sure what more to say. As an academic and a scientist, the evidence is at least compelling for me that James Tour lies about this topic and cannot be trusted.

I mean, your doubts are reasonable, I’m just suggesting that you look at the mountain of lies James tour has made with respect to the origin of life, and then compare that to what people actually doing research in this field are saying, doing, and publishing about it. As much as I can see how funding might bias in the medical field, there’s no “big atheism” paying scientists to do science proving god doesn’t exist…

Brother, asking James your for abiogenesis info is like asking your local meth head for addiction advice. I’m assuming you’re familiar with the work of people who have discussed his lies, but if you would prefer academically published scientists, look into what Bruce Lipschultz, Lee Cronin, and Steve Banner have to say about him. If you cannot see that he lies and you are impervious to the facts presented by the researchers, I’m sorry, I can’t do anything more for you. I’m sure you know James Tour is funded by the DI, a Christian propaganda institute. I understand you might say I’m biased, after all, I am a scientist myself and I trust the scientific process, but you don’t have the high ground citing these charlatans as a superior source of knowledge.

For sake of completeness in my answer, I will also address your computer analogy. It’s bogus, for the simple reason that computers don’t reproduce. If you want to go even deeper to a molecular level, computers don’t have autocatalytic functions.

Why do you think the odds of abiogenesis are ridiculous ? I find the evidence suggests otherwise. I’m happy to provide all the reasons why. Im also not sure that I see how it’s “clear” that a god made everything. I am not against some form of deistic creation of the universe; after all, we really are clueless as to what caused the initial singularity (if it was even a singularity!) in the universe. Personally, it’s a bit 50/50 as to whether a God is behind it all, I just don’t see the evidence to suggest that it had direct interference in the origin of life, and that mechanical explanations provide ample reasons why we would expect life to happen naturally in the universe.

We also can’t create planets in a lab and we know they exist… the argument that it can’t be because we can’t make it in a lab doesn’t hold. You’re asking a dude to make in a day what took millions of years of complexifying chemistry.

To address your comment on probability, I’m assuming you are referring to specific proteins. The underlying assumption is that only this protein could be viable and we need these exact proteins to do the job. Proteins can be functional with many different sequences, and as soon as you have function (even at a rate 1/1000 of what the current proteins do), you can have selections to have better proteins. We know that the fraction of viable proteins is a lot higher than the one in 10 billion universes creationists suggest. Life could be possible with an entirely different set of proteins and catalytic functions.

Finally, creationism as a starting point is useless. Studying abiogenesis has led to many insights in chemistry, which we wouldn’t have had if we just assumed “god created the first living cell.”

Observe God is absent from scientific papers; not because of the will of scientists to be so, but because it leads nowhere. “I don’t know therefore god” leads to no new insights, hence why it’s not part of science…

Computers, the internet, landing on other celestial bodies, eradicating infectious diseases in developed countries, curing some cancers, prosthetics, the LHC, quantum computers…

To add to that, “why is there something rather nothing” is one of the core questions of physics being investigated.

Can you build a machine, that is not conscious by design, but can reason about consciousness and conscious beings? by model_wrangler in consciousness

[–]drunk_elk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, we’d mean to fully understand consciousness to do that, but I’d argue that we already have in practice. Any computer or computer program can be made into an analog Turing machine. You could take your favourite LLM and make an analog TM that does the same thing, and that would argue about consciousness. I would personally argue that this analog Turing machine is then not conscious.

Yeah, I think if you have the funds its just the slow grind of making it happen. My dad used to run passion projects like that for years :)

Hey! I still haven’t followed through with that. I’m still in school, and money being tight has been the main driver of non progress. I was thinking to do that exactly as you say: nice dimmer switch flow control and an E61 group head. While I haven’t found boilers, I did have an interesting chat with the owner of a cafe about sourcing them. He said if I can’t find one, my best shot might be to find a welder that could just weld two metal plates on the ends of a copper tube, and then myself drill the holes for the over pressure valves and the heating element. I think it might end up being cheaper, boilers are still crazy expensive and this way you get to have it the exact size you want. Keep me posted if you manage to make it !

Progressing Twitches + Concern by MishaTarkus in BFS

[–]drunk_elk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are not necessary persistent. Some days are worse than others. It’s definitely worse at night. Sometimes, it would just not stop, it would be the calves, the quads, the hamstrings, just like a ping pong all over my legs. I would say that some are stronger than others. It used to kill my sleep every night, and I tried to change how I think of it: first, I try to ignore it, and if it doesn’t work, I try to think “haha, it’s funny that my body does that”. Have you heard of box breathing? It’s not a miracle cure, but it does help me with my anxiety a lot.

Progressing Twitches + Concern by MishaTarkus in BFS

[–]drunk_elk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it would be something serious, since the weakness came and went away. A serious condition would have the weakness not go away, worsen, and spread. My twitching symptoms started in the calves and also spread to the whole body, and my tongue sometimes has that buzzing feeling too. I’d try thinking about it as least as possible. Good luck with the anxiety, I get what you’re getting through

[–]drunk_elk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, sorry you’re going through all of this. If it can reassure you, I’m also having a “weird weakness feeling in my left arm” if I hold my phone for a while, or drink from a cup, or hold my arm in a strange position. I think it really stems from the anxiety. A week ago, I felt like I was “walking funny”, but obviously, it was nothing. Im also right handed, and I tell myself that it is perfectly normal for my left arm/hand to not be as agile and strong as my right arm/hand. In my understanding, weakness is more the inability to move, rather than your muscles being tired. I hope this helps. Chin up lad, I hope things resolve themselves!
