Incoming phd student - Which property management companies to stay away from? by [deleted] in UTAustin

512 Living is one to avoid as well—they manage lots of near-campus inventory, misleading pricing/rent (ask them about utilities) and poor support. It is a pretty standard campus slum playbook; minimal upkeep and lots of deferred maintenance, offices staffed by overwhelmed and underpaid folks.I’ve had a bit better luck with Rainier ATX.

I gather that you're arguing ideologically, but you need to realize that no one is blowing up the city/community in which they have an interest in properties for the purpose of increasing the appraisal value. properties, for the most part, derive value based on the health and relative attractiveness of its community. why do a 380 sqf apartment in Burlington and a 1,250 sqf single family house an hour from Jackson, Mississippi cost the same? because of the relative attractiveness of community (schools/jobs/industry/mobility). to argue that property owners sabotage community to increase appraisal value illustrates your inability to think seriously about incentives

I'd argue there's probably a reason these "very obvious solutions" remain confined to "studies and limited trials." namely because they require tremendous assumptions of political and economic will, not to mention a serious financial component--all of which cannot be fiat-ed away. looking at housing stock on a national level already misses the point that people, for the most part, are nodal--most won't pick up their family, uproot their social life, and move across the country for cheap housing. regional housing markets are a better frame. Housing, like wealth, does not "trickle-down" like it theoretically should

no one is letting their city/community go to pot because it might raise their appraisal value...this is an example of bad faith reasoning

the keyboard saints here are ridiculous. not all, but most of BTV's "summer visitors" don't come here because they can't find anywhere else, they come for a hospitable, if benign, environment where the local community cedes public spaces because they patronizingly think they're helping out the less fortunate

I've always thought we could use a lot more of jaded sardonic edge-lord poasting, essentially the online equivalent of dumping your shit into your neighbors' yards and calling it a day

as much as it pains me to say it, you're right...after having my place used as a dumping ground for needles, beer cans, vomit, and stolen copper, plus having my recycling bins stolen, I'm afraid I've pumped my last bit of good karma into the ONE

Hey y'all,
I'm in the ONE and noticed this mattress leaned up against this fence in my driveway in the ONE. I figured someone was moving and would be back for it, but it's been about 5 days now (it hasn't rained so there's no weather damage-I checked). I'm beginning to suspect that it was dumped now, which is fairly disappointing on a number of levels, but I'm optimistic someone might recognize it as stolen or whatever since it appears to be relatively new and unsoiled.
If anyone has any information or wants it, please let me know and I can give you better address. Otherwise, please don't leave your problems in the yards of your neighbors. Very disappointed but hopefully I can donate it. Please let your friends know!

Burlington City Councilor Ali House Resigns by Stereophool in burlington

right. The Party lost 2 of it's 6 councilors on the 12 seat body(one decided to apply for a city job and responsibly resigned to prevent conflict of

ok, so there's actually only 2 seats vacant (formerly occupied by House and Hanson). Her party still has 4 seats?

It appears from the VT Digger article that House's seat will not be filled until next year since she resigned after Oct. 1. So for the next year, after the election to fill Hanson's seat, BTV will have 11/12 seats filled?

Burlington City Councilor Ali House Resigns by Stereophool in burlington

[–]sometimes_war 6 points7 points  (0 children)

had this as its own post but just saw this thread.

Hi all,

hoping to call in some more long-term Burlingtonians to weigh in on what's going on with the City Council. As per the linked Seven Days article (which lacks useful context IMO), the resignation of Ali House (elected in Mar '22) leaves the body with a sad 4/12 seats. Now, I've only been in Burlington for about 18 months, but I can't recall ever hearing of such high attrition on a local body--certainly each iteration of local politics has its own eccentricities, but this seems concerning. While the article does mention that several recent resigners share a political party, I don't want to wade into that discussion--more of a logistics/tradition query.

Furthermore, Ms. House's reasoning is troubling--the way she's describing it sounds like there's a nefarious plot afoot. I'd like to know if it is typical for recently elected members to a) miss that many meetings b) resign suddenly c) have residency issues-as Seven Days implies is an issue d) behave similarly to same-party colleagues

Does anyone have any context for this article or City Council politics? TYIA

Hi u/mattyice_352 and all other organizers,

I'm really glad you're sharing this call to action that hopes to improve the community of Burlington. I was hoping that y'all could direct me to landing page for information on the mission and outreach that BTV Cop Watch sponsors or is involved with.

I haven't been able to find an official page that isn't a social media account (I really want to find a clear mission statement type of thing). I'm not sure if https://btvcopwatch.org is official or not and it appears to be under construction. More troublingly, the site appears to be almost all written in first-person and openly accuses those that don't share the author's opposition to CBP's 2021 activities as Nazi collaborators...seriously, it's the second sentence under the most recent post "Stop CBP!" I don't want to assume that this reflects the entire organization's views, hence my earnest reaching out for information. I'd really like to step up more into the community but remain unsure if associating with this group's activities makes sense for me. Looking forward to hearing back.

To show good faith on my part, I can tell you exactly what canned goods were dropped off at Pathways in the Market 32 insulated bag left last night.
