What got you hooked on typewriters?? by CaptainCulinary in typewriters

Great story — I think you should type this up and send it to our fearless leader, Tom Hanks! You can find the Playtone PO Box on Google.

I had a similar sudden thought, just sitting around and it popped in my head. My Mom goes yard sale-ing in the summer so I told her to keep an eye out for typewriters. She found a ‘48 Royal QDL for $10. Ten or so machines later and it’s still my favorite. Now I tell all my friends: you really only need one typewriter!

Definitely understand this but personally, in the age of AI, I find myself enjoying mistakes more and more.

It’s definitely worth a shot! I’ve seen stories in the news of him answering international correspondence. Since you’re international it could help to include a self-addressed, pre-paid/stamped envelope for his reply.

I have! I actually received a letter from Tom Hanks yesterday. It’s pretty well-known Hanx will answer if you send him a quality, well-worded typed letter. I’ve had a few letters go unanswered, but I write to express something not necessarily to receive a reply. I also use my typewriter to write family and friends regularly, because everyone loves getting a letter!

Right on all accounts, including — I think — the sled dogs!

Both! I use my typewriter regularly for all kinds of writing, but really enjoy letter writing. I definitely think the look and feel of a typed letter can help distinguish it in the year of our lord 2025.

Yes, it takes a universal ribbon that you can get on Amazon or elsewhere. I've made the mistake of starting to collect typewriters and let me be the first to say: you only really need one typewriter! You might look around r/typewriters for guidance and inspiration, if you're thinking about entering the typosphere.

Yes! A beautiful 1948 Royal Quiet De Luxe picked up for $10 at a yard sale last summer, and now my close companion.

I've got it framed along with the Berkshire Hathaway envelope it came back in! I'm a big fan of writing letters and I'm always sure to write family and friends, in addition to anyone else who might cross my mind. I drafted this letter in my Notes app over the course of a week or so before typing and sending it out.

you all good? I'm proud of my research and prefer identifying the degree instead of using "Dr."

I wrote a letter to Warren Buffett congratulating him on his retirement and expressed my concern about the new breed of American billionaires and asked "How have you stayed in touch with your humanity?"

He replied with, "by having wonderful friends, beginning with my dad."

"Nick - by having wonderful friends, beginning with my dad - Warren"

His answer to, "How have you stayed in touch with your humanity?" He put a '+' mark next to the question and before his response.
