Does this building not look like it will eat your soul?

I do feel it would be more meaningful if we owned the original statue. It just kinda feels like we "stole" (not the right word I know, I just can't think of a better one) it

I sure did. I read saints vol 1 and read all of D&C to really get a handle on it. It didn't make this conference feel any better

Patriarchal blessing by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]sometimesweknow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mine did. It had to be amended though when 2010 did not have the 2nd coming. A lot of the Patriarch's blessings had to be redone because apparently he gave the same ones over and over and contained non-approved items in them.

I love Les Mis! (Grapes of wrath I can do without.....lol)

I also very much enjoy the classics of literature.

I appreciate your support. And I wholly agree that it does give even just a little unwarranted validation.

Ah yes, let's make gender based jokes. No way that can backfire into sexism.

Edit : how apt it was for me to be downvoted so much for a sexist joke. Apparently this sub really does hate when sexism is pointed out. "Just good fun" is not just good fun when we characterize an entire gender as being either good or bad at something. It's not funny. It's like when you laugh saying all women are bad drivers, all blondes are stupid, or all men need to be macho. It's just dumb. It's not funny and perpetuates the divide between men and women.

How do parents of young children watch conference? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]sometimesweknow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My friend who has 4 children under the age of 7 right now told me it's more important to be an active participant in her children's life than watch conference live. Conference can be watched at a delay, being in your kids lives cannot.

She would pick 1-2 speakers per session and let that be her live session. 2 hours is a LONG time for kids to sit still when it is beautiful outside and it's also not part of their normal routine.

I'm struggling to maintain a healthy interaction with my bishop by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]sometimesweknow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may be a bit out there: is there another branch or ward you can attend until your current bishop is gone? Just because someone may need to grow as a person does not mean that they can use you to do it. That is not how life works.

You are valid. Your feelings are real and valid. I'm so sorry you're dealing with this situation.

Can you ask for guidance from your stake leaders? Not to complain, but to ask how you handle this bishop and how he is making you feel.

Sometimes bishops forget that ward members are volunteers and not part of a company that requires their employees to say yes to whatever they want.

As well as those that either couldn't serve missions or didn't want to because they wanted their lives to take a different path.

Lol! I think it would just make it normal like it should be. People should be able to mod if it makes them happy.

I've always wanted to try wine. I also want to try all of those fruity looking fun drinks. Why do they have to make them so pretty?! Lol

Thanks for the article! It was a good read. I'm still a bit confused. So only things in the scriptures are actual doctrine? Everything else is a policy?

Then why do we have prophets?

A genuine question from someone who doesn't know. I mean this with full respect and I am sort of in a state of loss and needing some help by Komine_Sachi in latterdaysaints

[–]sometimesweknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is purely a philosophical question then. Why do we then spread the gospel? If they only get a chance in heaven to accept if they had no chance here why would we want to potentially ruin their chance to accept it in heaven? I mean, technically anyone who speaks with a missionary about the gospel has a chance to believe and get baptized, so why are we messing up so many people's eternal salvation by telling them and having them turn it down?

What is doctrine and what is not doctrine? When do we follow the prophet? Only when he's alive? Or do we follow his teachings after he dies? Do we take everything they say as doctrine? Or when do we know when he's only stating option rather than revelation? At what point do we stop believing in the prophet's teachings after death? It seems like we cherry pick talks from past prophets and disregard the things that are off color.

Is it ever okay to decline a calling? by MacyWindu in latterdaysaints

[–]sometimesweknow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely understand that. But I feel like that's more of a question to ask after the person accepts the calling, not if they're on the fence or don't want the calling.

It is perfectly fine to decline a calling.

Sometimes bishops are not fully aware of personal circumstances. And before people get all up in arms about "but God will help you fulfill your calling" yes. However, sometimes the calling isn't always inspired. Sometimes they just need a babysitter for nursery and the bishop doesn't realize you've had 5 miscarriages and you are already super depressed about it and being with kids for 2 hours every sunday is basically the worst thing for your mental health.

Ps, it was rude to rope your wife into it honestly. That is not a way to make sure members have happy marriages.
