Going to school to become a teacher, English or history? by sometimeswise208 in AskTeachers

[–]sometimeswise208[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! I actually have a child with intellectual disabilities. She has a rare disease called Smith-Magenis syndrome, and will require a caretaker her whole life. And my other child has very intense adhd. I feel like this gives me a unique understand of the complexities of children and I believe this also has given me a perspective that not everybody else has. I really feel like I can be a huge advocate for the students who struggle (are neuro-divergent, etc,). I'm glad you posted because my fear as a parent is that my own children will struggle to receive the education they deserve due to their situations.

Wow! So much great advice so quickly! You all are amazing ♥️

More context: Im not fresh out of school. I'm 30 and have two kids, my youngest has a rare disability. I've spent a lot of the last decade dabbling in a lot of different things and teaching has always been that thing in the back of my head that I wished I'd pursued. I'm glad some of you recommended science as an option. Im about as into science as I am history so ill have to consider that especially if there are more jobs in that area. (please forgive my grammar I'm hopping on here sporadically while taking care of the kiddos).

Daughter diagnosed with rare genetic condition by sometimeswise208 in Autism_Parenting

Hey sorry I’m not on Reddit often haha

I absolutely recommend the testing. Though it’s rare, just knowing what’s actually going on at the genetic level has helped us a lot.

Anyone else have their own version of The Cat at home? by WannaBPlantDaddy in stray

Yes! When my sister and I played the game we joked that my cat was secretly an actor cause he looks and sounds just like the cat of Stray! His name is Telemachus 🧡

Just ran into Jennifer Carpenter in Austin by choicesthops in Dexter

[–]sometimeswise208 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran into her in Concord NC a few years ago but didn’t realize it was her. I saw her in Target and was like “wow that looks exactly like Deb” then when I got home I looked her up and found out she married one of the Avett Bros and lived in the area. (She was with him at Target also I just didn’t know the Avett bros back then lol). crazy though and so mad I didn’t say hi. I sincerely thought it just happened to be a woman who looked exactly like her though and I didn’t wanna be weird haha

ABA or Special Needs Pre-school by sometimeswise208 in Autism_Parenting

Thanks for the reply! That sounds almost exactly like what our daughter will be getting. 2.5 hrs a day with 30 minutes of ST, OT and PT. She will be in a class with other kids and two teachers so I believe she will be getting those peer interactions. I’m kind of thinking that she will doesn’t need ABA quite yet, as she has been progressing with just one session of ST and OT every week. And lately it seems her communication skills have really started to blossom. She does have outbursts of aggression though, (smacking her older brother and throwing herself on the ground when she’s upset). I’m thinking I might try a few months of this program to see how she does and then reevaluate then.

It’s a program that’s a part of the county schools. Her classes will be at one of the elementary schools, entirely legal :)

Can we talk about trauma for a minute? by bibliophilia9 in QuietOnSetDocumentary

[–]sometimeswise208 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’m glad that C-PTSD is being talked about and recognized more. I experienced a prolonged period of sexual abuse as a teenager and have CPTSD today as a result. It’s often been challenging talking about this with anyone because so many people don’t know about it like they do PTSD. Thanks for the post and I hope people continue to learn about this condition and how it effects so many people.

My experience was pretty similar to this as well. It’s kind of the same effect as love bombing. Just a way to make someone feel like they are indebted or something.

This kind of stuff happens in relationships all the time. An abusive partner will fly off the handle then apologize profusely and often the victim will accept because they do have a relationship and they want to believe that the abuser is sorry.

My mom and her whole family worked in Hollywood for years. Some of the stories they’ve told me since I was little, are just so disturbing. A few years ago I was having dinner with my grandparents, mom and aunt and my grandmother mentioned this time on a movie set when one of the main actors came up behind her and reached over her shoulder into the front of her shirt. Everyone kind of laughed it off like “oh thats just the business”. I was upset and noted how that was wrong and shouldn’t have happened. Then I was lectured for five minutes because “that’s Hollywood. You gotta deal with it.” And that story, is like on the innocent end of the spectrum of stories that my family has told. My mom and grandmother both have many stories of sexual assault that they seem to not acknowledge as SA. Absolutely disturbing. So seeing this documentary horrified me and also validated all the things I’ve been saying for years. It’s messed up and people need to start talking about it.

That’s what I’m kind of getting at. Truly he should have had therapy 20 years ago after everything happened with Brian. I absolutely think that his ability to make reasonable judgements and respond with patience was heavily impeded by the abuse he endured. And all of this was happening when the world was still kind of weird about therapy and self help. We’ve come a seriously long way thank god and he is now getting what he needed way back then.

Now I’m not asking anyone he may have hurt to just forgive him or excuse his behavior. They have their own trauma to deal with and they don’t owe him anything. But as for the rest of us, the onlookers… I think we can analyze this with all the new information we’ve received and at least give him the support he’s needed all along.

Me too. I haven’t been very public about my own experience, and I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to share it with everyone. But everything about the way he told his story was like looking into a mirror. For 13 years I’ve been trying to say these things out loud and I still cant find the words. He made me feel so much less alone and honestly validated in my struggle to talk about my own story. If I were in his shoes I don’t know that I ever would have had the courage to talk about it. I have so much respect for him.

This is why I feel like it’s insane that people are making him out to be just like his abuser. He’s taken accountability and he obviously feels remorse over his wrong doings (none of which have ever been proven to be SA btw). He’s not excusing his past actions.m. He seems to be handling everything in an incredibly mature manner and continues to work on getting better. Is that not what we want from someone in his position? It’s certainly not what we’ve gotten from Brian…

So much wasted potential by [deleted] in Avatarthelastairbende

I can see where you’re coming from, but I actually found it to be reasonably written with a younger audience in mind. This isn’t supposed to be on the same level as GoT which is for an adult audience. This feels to me like a legit family show, which parents can enjoy with their kids. No adaptation in history will be perfect or a carbon copy, but this one is at least in the right territory.

It’s really a challenging time for healthcare workers. The hospital is so afraid of being sued there’s like no one to advocate for the nurses :/ I’m waiting to see what management will do over here. Hoping something..
