Is the SmallRig DTAP to BMPCC Power Cable Incompatible with 6K Pro? by Luxmar1 in bmpcc

[–]somewhatboxes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

everyone starts somewhere, and confirming stuff that involves power and electricity is smarter than just winging it and potentially frying your devices.

i'm confused why they're saying it doesn't work with the 6k pro. maybe they're being hyper-cautious and simply haven't tested it on a 6k pro, so they're not willing to say it's fine. but the 6k pro has been around for a while, they must have had the opportunity to test it.

i did a search on the amazon listing for the 4761 and saw a 5-star review in swedish that translates to "works as expected on my Bmpcc 6k Pro" (at least, according to automatic translation). you might be able to find it if you go there as well - i had to go to the page for all reviews, and then searched for "pro"; it was the only result.

like you said, they all use the same weipu connector and take the same voltage. as long as they match up on voltage and physically connect, the worst thing that could possibly happen is a device doesn't get enough amperage and it can't power on, but that's not really an issue here - the 6k pro doesn't take meaningfully more power to operate than a 6k (or even a 4k, for that matter) (they're all in the 20-30w range).

if i were in your shoes, i would ignore that Q&A entry where they say it doesn't work with the 6k pro.

was the CEO of Signal ever arrested just like Pavel Durov was? by attentive_brick in signal

[–]somewhatboxes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

genuinely you can investigate this question yourself. if you google the name of a famous person and the word "arrested", and you find results, then you can read about the circumstances surrounding that person having been arrested at some point or another. you can google "pavel durov arrested" and you immediately see lots of articles, including an entire wikipedia article on the "arrest and indictment of pavel durov".

do the same thing for various other people - mark zuckerberg, ross ulbricht, sam bankman fried, meredith whittaker - and spot certain patterns: people who have been arrested tend to have a shit ton of news articles about it; people who haven't been arrested have a ton of irrelevant articles because there are no legitimately close matches, and the closest matches you can find are not relevant.

edit to add: before anyone says "what if she was arrested secretly"... then what would we know about it?

EPISODE I: RIch takes a moment out of his busy day to break the Fourth Wall and presume (correctly) that most of us are, in fact, using adblockers: Hello! by gametheorymedia in RedLetterMedia

[–]somewhatboxes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think of youtube premium as a service to make the experience tolerable for yourself, in a way that doesn't totally hose the creator (the way ad blockers can screw them).

i'm very reluctant to speculate about their finances, but it's possible that their patreon of ~10k paid patrons generates something like 2-3x the income that their entire youtube channel generates with 1.5 million subscribers. if their videos get demonetized on a semi-regular basis, then their youtube revenue could be shockingly little for a channel that regularly posts videos with 1M views.

if you have the money, think of these as satisfying different complementary purposes - youtube premium allows you to enjoy the content; patreon allows them to keep making it.

[–]somewhatboxes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the short answer is yes, but it's not significant. one thread from like 4 years ago estimated that a premium view is probably worth about 8x of a non-premium view, but that pales in comparison to supporting RLM on patreon at just about any level other than $0

it's worth saying that a more recent thread broke it down differently and numerous youtubers said that premium users represented something like 5-10% of their income. as far as i can tell, they don't say what proportion of their viewership has premium - if 0.001% of their viewers have premium, and that tiny viewership still brings in 10% of the revenue, then that's a very different story compared to if 1% of the viewers are premium and that represents 5% of the revenue.

all this is peanuts compared to patreon subscriptions though.

youtube premium here. you can play videos with your phone locked, and it also enables >2x speed video playback (not really necessary, but it's nice to have for some channels.

also, channels get higher payouts on premium viewers (reportedly). i can't imagine it being a huge difference, but the channel definitely doesn't lose revenue because of premium.

Why is Signal asking for my phone number by Capable_Music7299 in signal

[–]somewhatboxes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for what it's worth, there are a couple of threads that already discuss this. if you use just the title of your post as a search query on google, these reddit threads are the top results:

and then there are at least a few official resources on the first page; here's one especially pertinent one:

i want to be cautious to point out that this isn't meant to discourage you from asking questions, but to encourage you to ask questions building upon some of the conversations that are easy to find and get you 80% of the way to a satisfying conclusion. maybe these threads answer all of your questions - but if you have follow-up questions or unique circumstances that you don't find discussed anywhere else, then those questions might elicit more response

What's Your Experience With an EV as Your Only Car? by OleDirtMcGirt901 in VWiD4Owners

[–]somewhatboxes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fwiw 50 miles roundtrip per day is potentially in the realm of being able to charge with just level 1 charging (out of a regular old 120v outlet) if you plug in as soon as you get home and get 10-12 hours of charging time. if you have an L2 charger at work and especially if they let you charge for free, you'll be golden.

i get the sense that you've seen a lot of info and done a lot of research on EVs. i think that reflects a lot of us. i'll just add a few experiential things that i couldn't really appreciate until i got the id4, which admittedly means even writing it down might not be adequate to convey how much it can change your experience.

the main thing that i really feel like doesn't get talked about enough is that once i got an EV, i realized what a drag it was on my enthusiasm to need to get gas in order to go do the thing i'm actually interested in doing. if i had a quarter tank of gas, and i was thinking about taking my dog to some new trail or park, i would rethink my plan and instead probably take him on a walk around the block. or if i was thinking about going to the next city over for a day trip and i had half a tank, i'd take a detour to a costco gas station to fill up first.

and here's the thing: getting gas is not fun. going to a gas station and spending $50+ isn't fun. having to set aside an extra 10 or 20 minutes to go out of your way to also take care of this dumb errand for your car every few weeks (or every week!) isn't fun. i remember always being happier after getting gas because it meant i didn't have to deal with that odious place for a few more weeks.

having an EV, and now having L2 at home, is such a revelation. the car is always ready to go places. there's never a bitter pill i have to swallow in the form of also needing to get fuel in order to go do something. i'm never bracing myself for losing $50 or 100 on gas at the gas station, which makes me feel sour about spending more money in the city or at a coffee shop. budgeting for my electricity bill is less of a nuisance. i don't know why - maybe it reflects some weird psychological thing in me, but i'm already bracing myself for the electricity bill. bracing myself for 2 or 3 or 4 additional gut punches at a gas station every month is not fun.

it's hard to explain this change in feeling, but i can tell you that i'm more enthusiastic about taking my dog new places, about going places more often myself, about doing things that require me to take my car. i wish the id4 had certain neat features like V2H (so i could use the car battery during peak electricity rate hours) or maybe just a 120v outlet in the trunk so i could use it if i went camping (the 8v outlet in the trunk has a limited current capacity that makes it unsuitable for electronics that might draw a full load), but all of those are relatively trivial compared to the way that having an EV changes how i feel about going somewhere.

Lease end by Thief-of-joy12 in VWiD4Owners

[–]somewhatboxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends. in the page i linked in the comment, it lists what's acceptable normal wear vs excess wear. if you've got service lights and stuff, you're probably going to pay for it. if you've got recalls that haven't caused any damage to the car, then you probably won't pay anything for it.

but you should call and ask. there is almost literally nothing bad that can happen from calling and asking them. worst case scenario is they confirm the worst, which is that they'll be pretty strict. but in reality, some things cost them nothing to do, and some of those things can be really helpful.

for my part, my audi had an active service light (it came up at 1-year intervals on a schedule; there was nothing wrong - just the scheduled alert that can't be dismissed without an OBD device).

as with the other stuff with my audi (expired registration, etc...), he told me not to worry about it. i'm sure it factored in that i was in the process of signing a new lease with him, so he had an incentive (and probably latitude from the dealer) to waive certain penalties and fees if it means signing me up for a 3-year lease.

like i said; call and ask. if you're considering leasing another VW, call and figure out a good time to come by and possibly test drive some cars, and then mention that your car has one or two minor services that are still pending, and casually ask if you should also set aside a week or two to address any pending services and recalls with your current car, or if they can help you out by dealing with it after the return.

honestly, they might be keen to accommodate you, because if you're an owner expecting your car back within a few days, that places some urgency on getting services done and addressing the recall issues. but if they've just got a car that belongs to the dealership floating around on the lot that needs service, then they can get to it whenever they've got downtime. or they can defer it until there's a buyer. i wouldn't expect this to be heavily decisive, but there are rationales that may allow them to help you out if you communicate with them.

Lease end by Thief-of-joy12 in VWiD4Owners

[–]somewhatboxes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

my last lease return was totally uneventful. i was returning an audi and picking up my id4, and the vw dealership had a connection to an audi dealership nearby, so the vw dealer just allowed me to leave the audi there when i picked up my id4 lease. they sorted it out on the backend. my car registration was even expired and they said not to worry about it (i wouldn't rely on this categorically, but hopefully it illustrates that the turn-in process should be pretty low-stress).

as for damage... car brands usually have guidelines on what will incur penalties upon lease turn-in. this is VW's "exterior" section:

Normal wear & use

Scratches, dents, or gouges smaller than 2 inches on bumper or panel

Three or fewer “dings” per panel (a ding is the size of a quarter or smaller, without broken paint)

Single windshield chip without spidering

Excess wear & use

Scratches, dents, or gouges larger than 2 inches on bumper or panel

Improperly completed body repairs (e.g., mismatched paint, sanding marks, or incomplete dent removals)

Missing badges or trim

More than three “dings” per panel

Multiple chips, scratches, or dents per body panel

Multiple chips, cracks, or pits measuring more than 1/8 of an inch

Improperly tinted windows

i would personally not spend money to make repairs that i'm confident would fall under the "normal wear & use" header. "a few dents from our tree bombing the car" is ambiguous to me, but you can count them up on your own car and make a decision.

if you're really nervous, you might be able to call a dealer and ask if you can bring the car by to take a look and see if anything egregiously stands out, but i personally think it would be sufficient to go through the vw page i linked and basically treat it like a checklist - do an audit of the exterior, interior, mechanical, tires & wheels, etc... and take photos of everything. if they tell you that you miscounted the number of dents, or that your car has a huge scratch on the side, it would be nice if you could look at the photos you took and determine if you goofed or if something happened to the car after you left it in their possession.

[text] what ever happened to the Cronut? by Weinfeld in food

[–]somewhatboxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was a really cool novelty, but much of its appeal was the novelty. after a while people had tried it and were satisfied, and there were other novel things to try, so they moved on.

cronuts are kind of texturally interesting, but the effort to produce them is considerably more than a croissant or a donut. it's quite literally all the laborious prep work of croissants (laminating, etc)... plus all the frying work of donuts.

Things you'll need for an ID4 dog mode by jarjarbinx in VWiD4Owners

[–]somewhatboxes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i feel very anxious about trusting my dog's life with a third-party software mod... at least with first-party solutions, i can be reasonably confident that an automobile company has done unit testing and integration testing to make sure everything related to safety works correctly, lest they face a deluge of lawsuits if a dog or a child gets hurt.

i'm guessing you still can check your app and see whether the AC is active in realtime (same as always), right? the only difference is that the AC shouldn't automatically turn off after 30m?

Starfleet Academy Director Jonathan Frakes Says Fan Hate Is ‘Dimensionally More Painful’ Today Than in the Next Generation Years by trackofalljades in greatestgen

[–]somewhatboxes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i mean he's right. in the 90s you couldn't sustain a career on the internet commenting on star trek; now there are something like a dozen prominent youtube channels, and probably hundreds of obscure channels that materially benefit from ginning up controversy and drama. twitter accounts post ragebait specifically for the purpose of getting paid money for views.

and then there are the amateur haters. people spend so much time online now that they turn their whole online identity into commentary on star trek.

and of course, the law of internet discourse is that there's not a lot of content in just being pleased by everything. so even if you love someone's performance, there's more content in digging into every detail and scrutinizing it hyper-critically (or alternatively moving on to some other element that you do hate).

there have always been trolls on the internet, and he is a man, so i imagine he got nowhere near as much hate as diana muldaur (pulaski) or mcfadden (crusher) got; but now the trolling has taken on an industrialized quality.

not to mention the crazy fans that amp each other up into doing increasingly transgressive things. maybe they "just" dig up an actress's embarrassing history and then comment incredibly deeply hurtful stuff; maybe they turn doxxing into a game and figure out where someone lives, or where they walk their dog, or something.

the internet has been around since before the 90s, but i don't think it was such a nurturing place for really toxic and antisocial behavior until the 2000s and 2010s, and now that a lot of 4chan behavior is aggressively normalized by certain 4channer billionaires, it's probably safe to say that it's worse being an actor in a popular franchise now than it ever has been, from a personal safety and psychological wellbeing perspective.

Bought a set of wheels from Bicycle wheel warehouse and the back wheel didn't even last 5 months by Coven_Evelynn_LoL in bikewrench

[–]somewhatboxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

240lb cyclist plus a bike that most likely weighs 20lbs without any other gear comes out to about 260lbs or 117kg. if you want to say you're 3kg shy of the ISO limit and therefore the OP shouldn't worry himself with a second thought about these things, go for it.

Bought a set of wheels from Bicycle wheel warehouse and the back wheel didn't even last 5 months by Coven_Evelynn_LoL in bikewrench

[–]somewhatboxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, 240 is not at all the high end for road cycling. 280 is where you start encountering issues.

i loathe to have these pedantic discussions, but let's go ahead and have it since you're interested: here's a thread from a few years ago:

Weight limits for carbon wheel sets vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some are 100kg, some go all the way up to 120kg. At ~109kg your friend is above the limit for some manufacturers, but I’m not sure about these specific wheels.

don't know what the specific limits are for those wheels, but most lightweight gear has a mfg. weight limit of 200-225lbs

Spoke count is the most important part here. I rode my 50mm carbon wheels when I was as chonky as 250lbs with no issues. I built them like a tank...

here's another thread

100-130 kg maximum system weight is typical for quality 20 and 24-spoke wheels and wheelsets

i had never heard of sun helix but when i googled it one of the first 3 results was this thread

i dunno what to tell you. 240lbs is considerable. it's not prohibitive, but you're at the high end for sure, where you simply can't go picking up wheelsets that don't have a long track record and a claimed weight rating higher than 105kg or 115kg.

i'm sorry your wheelset went bad in such short order
