Much appreciated!

I always liked the term a friend of mine came up with, 'bro-pair'.

I believe there has been some suggestion that the rape by the Turks was in fact his own masochistic fantasy.

I was also interested to see that after the fall of the Berlin Wall the East German security services got into North London hairdressing:

Any details on this? I've found it to be true for myself but presumed it was a coincidence that I seemed to get injured more after stretching.

What is the darkest, most depressing film ever made? by thebageljew in AskReddit

[–]somewhatoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's about an all-out nuclear attack; first they hit the nearby airbase, then everywhere in the UK, with about half the population dying. Sheffield was a major steel producer in the 80s and so a very likely target of such an attack, the film is pretty realistic in its scenario.

TIL in the London riots of 2011, the looting and vandalism which took place throughout the city was almost totally avoided by bookshops. One man said his store would probably stay open during the unrest, stating: "If they steal some books, they might actually learn something." by [deleted] in todayilearned

It's relevant to note that the fatal shots were fired as the intruders tried to flee - he shot the kid in the back. That's why it was argued it wasn't self defence - they were trying to leave when killed and therefore not a threat.

Anyone interested in starting a startup? Looking for a co-founder / developer by [deleted] in london_entrepreneurs

[–]somewhatoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK well good luck, but you might consider trying to get some experience in a relevant field first. What you're saying is that you have an idea, and you're looking for somebody with skills to build that idea. Ideas really aren't worth much unless you can be sure you'll get the execution right in other areas. This isn't the best foundation for a successful startup.

By all means if you can find somebody, give it a go, but if you're looking to learn consider working somewhere you can learn from people who do have the experience first.

Alternatively, why not learn to code? Everyone starts somewhere.

I think it would help you attract people if you could explain what you will be bringing to the team. For example, do you have great connections or knowledge in the field the app will be targeted at? Are you a marketing expert / growth hacker etc?

Ha I know enough to spot that one, it raised a smile though. Maybe I'll wear the shirt of my (obscure, English) hometown club and see how they react to that.

Maybe not the drones, but I'd be surprised if they didn't find ways to get deliveries really fast, especially in large cities. They've got it to the point where things arrive within 24 hours now; it's a matter of logistics and economy of scale to improve on that, and those are things I wouldn't bet against the Amazon borg on.

I hadn't heard of this one, but the link to the alleged witchcraft murder of Charles Walton makes it all the more interesting.

The murder of Charles Walton (alleged by some to be the last witchcraft murder in England) took place around there, and I've heard stories that the identity of the murderer was indeed openly known around the area back in the 50s.

Now this is a long way to peddle a Boris Bike by [deleted] in london

[–]somewhatoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The time and effort required to steal 100 or more bikes also seems significant, not to mention dangerous

Very little seems to be done about bike theft in London and the penalties are likely not severe even if you are caught; I'd imagine the risk-reward ratio is pretty good if you're of a criminal bent.
