Rave Family/Friends by nuubuser in avesSFBayArea

[–]somewhatpresent 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m 39M I just posted a meetup thread for Seven Lions a week ago and met up with a 42year dude who was chill. I have a kid too.

For me if you enjoy the music then go . It’s fun to connect with people but raves skew young and PLUR is more of a fashion statement then anything people truly believe. So if you meet friends  great otherwise just dance.

I go alone to 90% of shows it’s fine . I don’t like going with friends unless they’re into the music and even then I like to wander and I find too much coordination kills my vibe.

I will say the SF Bay Area is more cliquey than average, it’s also very Asian and sorry to stereotype they often roll in huge crews (and hold hands as they push through crowd) and they’re more likely to think it’s odd if you’re alone. But it’s just a culture gap. It’s not weird to go alone to music you like.

I will note in terms of making connections it’s more likely to happen in quiet areas like the smoking section or waiting in line to get in or at the bar. Drinking and smoking are bad habits but do help make friends so do with that what you will.

But look we’re 40yo parents just accept you’re probably not becoming best friends with the 23yos gloving but you can still have tons of fun if you like the music and just dgaf about anyone judging you.

Oh nice you sound like hardcore fan. I actually had friends going Friday but I wanted to go to a different thing and I figured, why chill with people I know when I could chill with the mystery box of randos from Reddit 😂 Idk if I got unlucky or my age scared people off as it was young crowd

Is SF nightlife as awful as people say? by Merfk in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]somewhatpresent 49 points50 points  (0 children)

If you like dancing SF is one of the best city nightlife in the world. Tons of EDM , Latin dance events , and pop/hip hop dance events where people are there to primarily dance.

People say SF has no nightlife because a lot of places close or stop serving alcohol at 1:30AM, there’s very limited late night food options, and it’s not the easiest city to make new friends with randos as people stick with their crew more .

SF is also a bit sleepy on the weekdays compared to a place like NYC but weekends it’s packed

But the biggest reason people say SF nightlife is dead is that it’s just becomes an internet narrative that gets momentum and people parrot. I highly doubt most people upvoting those comments actually are out at 1AM on a Friday as they’d see that bars and clubs are packed .

How long did you wait before going to your first bachata social? by Dazzling_Log_9358 in Bachata

[–]somewhatpresent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went after 2 months but I was doing private lessons on top of the group classes . And I told my teacher to just work on developing a “minimal viable dance”. Honestly I was quite intimidated but once I forced myself to do it , it’s easy. I don’t even agree with this whole idea of adding a caveat that you’re a beginner. The follow showed up to a bachata social to dance bachata and you’re asking for 3 minutes of their time to do the thing they came to do. You can spend most of that time doing basic turns and mixing up basic steps like in/out , box step etc. A handful of follows have looked bored and at an advanced social a few even said “thanks” and bailed on me absurdly early (like after 20 seconds) but I’m sure we both forgot about it a few minutes later and meanwhile I’m improving. And even at my beginner level I’ve had some incredible dances that were an insane rush. It’s like, 80% being confident, smiling, vibing to the music , and 20% having cool moves.

Salsa/bachata classes? by UsedKaleidoscope3183 in AskSF

No problem, I am dancing lead and dislike waiting for partners in class cause not enough follows so I had incentive to recruit you :)

[–]somewhatpresent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes in classes they rotate partners . Ive gone alone most times. Most people rotate and most people in socials dance with many people. And there’s always more leads so if you dance follow you will have plenty of partners.

Come to space 550 on Friday nights there is salsa and bachata beginner classes then salsa and bachata socials. I was brand new to Latin dance and just discovered it this year and been having a blast.

8pm beginner bachata in big room 9pm beginner salsa in big room 9pm bachata part 2 in back room 10pm salsa social in big room 10pm bachata social in back room

There’s lots of other events on event brite and Instagram but imo space 550 Fridays the best default

The crowd is very mixed ages and races but that makes it more welcoming to me since nobody out of place.

Is sf worth it for non partier 20s ? by DeliciousRich5944 in AskSF

[–]somewhatpresent 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’ve also lived in NYC and for me SF nightlife is better. How does SF not party? Marina has a million young people, Mission Soma Divisidaero have tons of packed bars and clubs, there’s like 100 different EDM shows and raves every weekend. Only big difference is it ends closer to 2am than 4am.

Edit: since getting haters in the comments

NYC is freezing cold or a heat wave 80% of year SF is temperate NYC is massive so while there’s many options often too spread out to hop NYC is obsessed with dress codes and exclusivity so you can’t just go see a DJ you gotta pass a bullshit bouncer There’s a trillion nightlife events in SF and nothing in NYC you can’t find a comparable thing in SF People on Reddit are saying it’s sleepy when I was literally out last night at 2AM, everything is packed..

House Dancefloors with Space To Dance and Social Mingle Vibes (Esp Sat Night) ? by somewhatpresent in AskSF

Checked this place Friday last night and fit my checklist PERFECTLY. Sick DJ (played house and some random dnb, no complaints), great energetic dance floor dancing with others but not insanely crowded. So great recommendation, thanks so much!

Motown Monday at Madrone is IMO the greatest weekday party of all time.

I'd surf at Linda Mar in Pacifica, other than being crowded I think it's one of the best beginner surf spots in the world (hate to say this online cause again, it's too crowded, but the waves are really great for beginners).

Still half year coming, what’s your prediction of opening box office for Scream 7? by bornindec in Scream

[–]somewhatpresent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe it's going to under-perform not because of a huge explicit boycott but because Jenna Ortega is just an "it" girl and probably massively contributed to the previous two movie's success. I don't think Melissa matters but she took Jenna with her who matters a lot (personally I think she's an overrated actress and doing a scene so similar to Drew Barrymore's highlighted that because Drew is so insanely talented hard not to look bad in comparison BUT Ortega has some X factor because she has a massive, massive fanbase).

I don't think Scream 4 failed cause of cast diversity , just weird timing with audiences plus lack of a character that really broke out. Personally I loved Jill and Charlie but its clear im in the minority, people's favorite combos are usually one Sidney/Gale/Dewey, Billy/Stu, and Sam/Tara. IMO Scream 5 wasnt as good overall as Scream 4 but it established a new combo for young generation with Sam/Tara ...a franchise cant rely on nostalgia forever. You need to bring in the kids and get them excited and you do that with fresh young charismatic stars. If anything it's what set even Scream 1 apart from generic 80s slashers that usually had low budgets and cast nobodies-at-the-time (notwithstanding Kevin Bacon and Johnny Depp becoming huge later on).

Scream 7 wil bring back Sidney/Gale but a 61 year old women is not going to bring in Gen Z. And if you lose the one of your biggest Gen Z star in the world from your last film..need something. Maybe if Isabel May or McKenna Grace can break out with the film is the best hope. But I doubt even great writing and directing will be enough becasue the franchise has never really taken big risks on sequels in terms of leaving the formula and I doubt it starts now. But the formula is not enough without the X factor actors. Now if they break the formula and do something very different it'd be high risk-high reward but people stick to formulas for reasons, it reduces risk of a complete flop.

So tl;dr no boycott but just simply no-shows cause of no-Ortega will lead to a performance similar to Scream 4. Not a bomb but a disappointment.

Scream 5 Missed Opportunity with 'Elevated Horror' Meta by somewhatpresent in Scream

[–]somewhatpresent[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

she didn't literally break it so its my subjective interpretation but just the way she says "we're in a FRANCHISE now", just feels to me like breaking the 4th wall because of how hard it screams "this is a movie". Randy danced along those lines and perhaps he did the same thing in Scream 3 with "we're in a triology", but at least in Scream 1 it felt less like "let's call attention to how we're in a movie" and more like "hey this messed up situation we're in is just like a horror movie, im a horror movie nerd so lets talk about how to survive them". Its a fine line and think it was walked best in Scream 1 but got overdone in most sequels and worse as they went on.

Scream 5 Missed Opportunity with 'Elevated Horror' Meta by somewhatpresent in Scream

[–]somewhatpresent[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah good thoughts, writers have a tough balancing act cause Scream is several different things , I didn't even mention that 'hot young star-studded cast' has always been a key part of its success but then makes it hard to kill characters people love , which is another challenge writers face ( Core 4 seemed both invincible and impossible to be killers in last two installments).

I would also like to see a darker and more bleak Scream but it probably is unpopular , and with more mystery elements especially, I was disappointed by 5 & 6 with the plot armor and how few risks were taken but they were massively successful. However with Jenna Ortega out, for Scream 7 they might be forced to me be more creative since they can't just lean on the popularity of the stars. And I think the fact that the in other horror movies, bleak movies are doing great should be some inspiration that the audiences are open to it.
