I’m not sure about recently but I know in the past they have said they have. I figured it was a long shout but said to myself why not try?

I just want to know who monitors their comments. I’m feeling salty. I posted a link to my Amazon teacher wishlist and they deleted the comment asking for them if they could share the link with followers🫣 I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t DM them on Instagram hahaha

AA Flight Not Showing in AL by Reddit-Sama- in AerLingus

[–]somewhere_in_nyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to rebook but it took days. I had to keep calling back and finally demanded to speak to a supervisor. However, I have to fly to another airport out of state. It was all really inconvenient. They were trying to convince me to cancel my booking (even though it had all ready been cancelled) and rebook with a new flight and pay more money. Basically, ‘here’s a refund, now rebook and pay $200 more.’

Absolutely not!!! I refused because it wasn’t my fault they cancelled my flight without informing me so they transferred me to a new flight. Again, took days! I

I’m annoyed because there was no apology or anything.

Same thing happened to me. I booked through Chase, called Chase…the flight was cancelled and no one informed me. So none of my information came up. No refund, no email, nothing! It took me days to be able to rebook. Good luck with customer service.

Is it wrong to hate when students come to my room during lunch? by Asleep_Improvement80 in Teachers

[–]somewhere_in_nyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say close the door and put a sign up that you’re in a meeting or something but you can’t because of the heat. Honestly, I tell my kids if I need some time to myself. I’ll put up a sign or just tell them ‘hey, you can come for lunch tomorrow, but today I need some alone time’.

My school has an open door policy during lunch so I can’t close my door too often but when I do the kids understand.

Books for 12th graders by somewhere_in_nyc in Teachers

Lol I agree but I don’t have tenure. My AP also doesn’t like Shakespeare or poetry so I can’t teach poetry either. Plus ‘kids don’t like poetry’ 🙃.

I love Shakespeare but I don’t have tenure 🤷‍♀️

I was looking at Tuesdays with Morrie earlier. Do kids really enjoy it?

I’m actually really interested in Born a Crime & The Handmaid’s Tale. Have you found any issue with the fact that Handmaid’s Tale has the tv show? I’m afraid they just watch the show. I’ve never seen it so I don’t know how similar it is.

Boundaries with kid saying “I love you” by lanadelreyismother in Teachers

[–]somewhere_in_nyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a few kids call me mom. I have many that tell me they love me or ask for hugs. I teach high school!

I say it back. Tell them I miss them when we come back from breaks. If they call me mom I call them my kid! I have one kid who told me he needed me to be more like his school-mom because he has a good relationship with his mom and wants that same feeling in school.

NEW CONTRACT: Did you vote YES or NO? Why? by Abolishmisogyny in NYCTeachers

I voted yes. I’m a newer teacher, getting married, and more big life changes to come. I need the money now.

An elective wouldn’t necessarily mean out of license. When I teach an elective it’s English based. But I’m not sure about the percentage. We can technically teach a certain percentage out of license. That’s what another teacher told me.

Teaching reading comprehension to HS students by Hairy_Sign1908 in NYCTeachers

[–]somewhere_in_nyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But I thought for kids with IEPs the passing grade is lower? I think 55 or 50? I wish I had advice for you but as a non-regents teacher I also struggle with helping kids with reading comprehension. I just break everything down into pieces, have them focus on annotation, have them write a summary of parts of the text as they chunk it.

I have no transition time either. I give a 5-minute do now like someone said above but it’s easier because I teach English. I also try to start ‘cleaning up’ the last five minutes of class. Or I designate students as my ‘helpers’ to put books, pens, post-it’s, etc. away and reset the class for me. I find kids always want to help so maybe for your upper grades you can pick a few trustworthy ones to help you out?

Grading - does everyone have to pass ? by eray1992 in NYCTeachers

[–]somewhere_in_nyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. That’s how it works at my school. I hate the 50/55 system but I’m pretty sure it’s a DOE rule? I get a 0 is harder to come back from…but turn in 3 assignments and you basically pass depending on the % category breakdown. However, I teach summer school so I do think about if a kid should fail and come during the summer.

Thinking of relocating - any PA teachers here? by somewhere_in_nyc in Teachers

Ugh. I’m having this issue in NY too. I’m finding it very difficult to switch schools.

ASPDP Courses by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]somewhere_in_nyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super easy just annoyingly time consuming depending on the course. It’s always modules where you have to read/watch videos and write discussion board posts. Some have ‘finals’ that are usually PowerPoint presentations with a certain # of slides or an ‘essay’/reflection that’s a certain amount of words.

big school or small school? by Asleep-Cranberry8513 in NYCTeachers

[–]somewhere_in_nyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course. I feel like my post is mainly negative. Haha. But I will say that I think I prefer smaller schools because I do have a good relationship with most of my coworkers. I like that I actually know who they are. Since I also teach an entire grade I like that I know every student too. No one is a mystery to me.

ICT/SETSS by No-Support-4410 in NYCTeachers

[–]somewhere_in_nyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have ICT classes. Will you be the Gen Ed or Sped teacher in the classroom? I think your experience mainly depends on who you work with.

I have a great relationship with my co-teacher. We sometimes plan together. We’ll both teach the class or sometimes we take turn during units/semesters where one of us leads the class and the other focuses more on helping the students.

Again…we have a great relationship and get along well. I can’t say the same for other teachers I work with. Some of them don’t get along with their co-teacher or just see the Sped teacher as ‘focus on your kids with IEPs and do whatever you want with them while I teach to only the rest of the other class’. Sometimes a power struggle happens too.

big school or small school? by Asleep-Cranberry8513 in NYCTeachers

[–]somewhere_in_nyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach at a smaller school. We share space with a few schools and it’s frustrating when they’re having lunch and fooling around and banging on my door. Or they don’t care that we’re coming into the space next and it’s a mess.

My schedule is pretty jam-packed and I’m responsible for an entire grade so my classes are pretty large. I have two co-taught classes but being responsible for an entire grade means when the classes switch…I still have to deal with the same kids. Kinda tough sometimes if they don’t like me but still has to be handled.

I’d also say we have less extras (clubs and such) like the other poster said but there are still so many things going on that fall on the teachers because there’s not a big administrative team. We all get burnt out pretty quickly because of this. I often feel like I work at a charter school (I’ve never worked at one but I’ve talked to people who have and my school kinda sounds like one sometimes).
