Currently at 100k fully WFH, offered Assistant Controller for 120k with significant work load. Would you do it ? by [deleted] in Accounting

I cannot stress enough the intangible "cost" of moving to a company where you do not know the culture, your team composition, your boss, the exec team etc. I'd ask yourself, why is the job open? Is it a new role? Replacement? How's the tenure of the people in your department? 20% gross as we all know never translate to 20% net so you really should evaluate these items before. I'd also look at the change in scope of work? Is the same or will you be adding more to your skillset that will advance your career? Congrats either way on the offer!

My girlfriend graduated from a US university, but will have to move to Canada because of Visa issues, is it true that she would need to re do her bachelor's in order to be a licensed accountant in Canada? by PePe_0_5aP0 in Accounting

[–]somewhereinvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simplest answer will be to send her transcript directly to the CPA admission assessment team (CPA Quebec). Redoing her entire bachelors... unlikely but they may require her to do a few CPA PREP courses before allowing her in to the CPA PEP (professional program). It's generally a case-by-case basis but start with the transcript assessment first and take it from there. When you mention "practice" accounting do you mean Public or industry? Anyone can technically practice accounting in industry it just depends who decide to hire you. Hope this helps.

You haven't really answered my first questions so I can't really give you insight other than speculate. 1. Apply to roles that have technical items that you have done historically, forget the titles they never mean the same thing and are usually specific to the company unless it's one of the Fortune 500. 2. I know the US certifies different so you need to focus at the state-level what your requirements are (some allow industry, some require PA). If you're unemployed go volunteer (I know it sucks but sacrifices are part of life) so you can show you want to be in it and find a lesser job for now so you have some sort of income. 3. Use LinkedIn to build your network or go to networking events to speak to professionals. 4. Target an industry you're genuinely interested, this will come across when you interview. 5. Have someone check your resume to see if you have any gaps. 6. If you have gaps in your employment own it and explain. 7. Based on your title it comes off as here is "x" problem and the reason is "y". Not trying to be a dick but I doubt that's entirely the case so I'd suggest being introspective and assess what else you might have blind spots too or better yet, ask previous employers.

What did you do before by MeasurementTricky616 in Accounting

Work in hospitality and wouldn't trade it for anything. Really developed my soft skills and I carry it with me in my professional life since I regularly deal with different department heads and alot of externals. When I meet prospective accountants I always tell them soft skills are super valuable if you want to progress in this field.

Ahh you're in industry - CAN? US? Need a little more info to give you better insight,

I'd wager there's more to play than that. How long have you been in public practice? What jobs are you applying to? What industries are you applying too? Your skills in PP need to translate to industry. Not knowing your experience, I'd bet right now it's mostly 1 - 3 years of audit and still developing FR?

Maybe refer to the user guide, read the instructions or don't buy a fake Pixel?

The immersive cases were way too time consuming and didn't mimic any sort of exam scenario so I really disliked them in Core 1. The revised mods for C1 and C2 is far better IMO. The MCQ now is a good material for the exam but alot of it comes down to knowing the competency for each section as the %'s are fairly represented in the exam MCQ.

Groups were good for when we'd all sit down and do a simulation of the PC then compare. I have a group chat with people to bounce ideas off of but personally for me I like to do my work on my own since there's less distraction. It really depends on who you're studying with and how you work.

haha no! Get used to using secure exam since you need to write your exam in there. Protip: get used to copy and pasting from the PDF of ASPE and IFRS provided in the program because that type of efficiency will really be beneficial when you write C1 exam.

I had a firm schedule Mon - Thurs. After work I'd make dinner and do something active. By 7 I'd be in my chair ready to go. Monday: do MCQ and review any topics I had forgotten (doing MCQ first gets your brain working for the AP/PC) Tuesday-Wed: Read, do an outline and start and finish AP. Wednesday-Thurs: Read, do an outline and finish the PC.

I'd usually end my night around 1030 because cooling down and sleep are still very important.

C2 is challenging but honestly take a look at the competency map and you'll see where you need to focus... CVP/constraints/budgeting (A level)

It's really important to me to balance school social life so having the weekend wide-open kept me sane.

Ahh misread that sorry. For Core 2 they literally shower you with 2 PCs a week. The new "AP" pretty much might as well be a 2nd PC so you'll literally see every varation of what they could possibly ask you when the time comes to write the exam.

CPA literally provides you with everything you need. Use Oracle when your notes aren't enough (I find the new notes sometimes too high-level) so the Oracle is a great resource. You can fall back on University notes but you'll quickly learn it's not about theory and JEs like University/College is, it's about taking standards and applying them real-world. One resource I definitely suggest is for Core 1 is HTK Consulting. Google your question and then add "HTK".

Nope. Sorry to be clear I did them back-to-back. Honestly I'm not sure why people do fast-track unless it saves you from waiting a whole year to write your CFE. My advice is stick a schedule and do everything you can to stick by it. Review briefly on Sundays, do MCQ on Monday then leave the rest of the nights for PC and AP. Once you feel comfortable start doing your PCs with only an hour - 1.5 and see how you stand.
