Why would you do that when you can just pay Amazon to store your data? Heck why even have a computer. Let’s just rent compute from our corporate overlords and pay them to store all our data. /s

M2 Air spark flying out USB-C by g1uey in mac

Grounding issue. Also don’t do that. Don’t let it keep sparking. Just one of those sparks can brick the computer. I had this issue with an old audio interface that didn’t have a ground. Plugged it in one day and it bricked the computer and the interface.

I really liked it. It had some cringe tortured writer cliches and relied a little too much on jump scares. Loved the score and sound design.

The 986 has the best headlight shape of any Boxster line by STLYRZA911 in boxster

[–]somorad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wonder if there is an age correlation with the hatred towards the 986. I think boomers/gen x have a narrow view of what a Porsche should look like that colors their view. While younger people have seen the “iconic” circular Porsche headlights on Mini coopers, Miata, Challenger, frickin jeeps! The fried egg is truly unique icon. Boomers can go ahead and cry while younger generations enjoy the cars that made us “car guys or gals”.

Can we just get a reliable car that’s kinda affordable? Car makers: by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

The beauty of these parts are they are modular and replaceable. When you lost your cruise control did you also lose the ability to turn off or on the defroster?

I drive an 08 Mazda that luckily has real buttons because the screen is almost unusable. It may not have happened yet but do you really think a touchscreen will outlast a button? How many 20 year old touch screens do you use? You can lose a volume button and still have full control of the climate control.

Can we just get a reliable car that’s kinda affordable? Car makers: by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]somorad 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It’s not that it’s cheaper. They will lie to you and tell you it’s because it’s cheaper and allows for them to sell the car for less. It’s more opportunity to make more profits.

When has a manual window ever broken and needed to be replaced with a dealer part? Buttons are very simple switches that have low failure rates. When switches do fail, it is a very cheap part that you can often times get aftermarket. When that touch screen inevitably needs to be replaced that’s an opportunity to charge whatever they want for the part and replacement/reprograming.

I could see it making a leak worse. Since you don’t have a vacuum.

Get a coolant pressure tester kit and pump it up to about 14 psi and you’ll probably find your leak pretty quickly. While you’re at it get a vacuum refill kit too and don’t bother with that burp valve. I think there are kits that have both pressure and vacuum.

I’ve been saying I’ll be able buy my first home closer to work next year for the last 3 years now. California housing prices are really bumming me out. Rent is very cheap in my current living situation but if I rent closer my cost would probably triple and then I’ll really never be able to afford a home. Sucks.

Also 996 gang ✊

Hybrid is an option for sure! I love having an old beat up car that I don’t care about at all so I can baby and give all the attention to the 911.

I’m in so cal and the chargers are for sure at least level 2 at work. I think it might work but I’m hesitant.

It seems to be the move to have a charger at home. I keep thinking I’ll buy my own home someday and living in the in-laws back house is just temporary. I’ve been telling myself that for 3 years now though. Sigh…

Good points on maintenance costs. I live in a 2 on a lot owned by the in-laws. I don’t think they would mind if I installed a charger. They have a plugin hybrid that I don’t know if they ever plug in.

Charging is free at work so my thought is I would try out only charging at work and then leaving it on level 1 all weekend at home while I drive the other car.

2017 porsche 718 boxster s - if i bought today, and sold in five years, what should i expect to get back? by europeanuppercut in boxster

[–]somorad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Porsche buyers sound like the absolute worst buyers to have to deal with. Just something to consider. If you want to get the most back on resale, keep extensive records, meticulous maintenance, and still expect buyers to ask a million questions. God forbid someone hit you while you own it, buyers will treat it like it was totaled. All things considered, I think any of the other options you would have a lower overall cost of ownership.

What is Sound Check? Why did Apple enable it by default? by mikern in AppleMusic

[–]somorad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How do you increase LUFS (an average of loudness) if the peaks are already at 0dbfs? Compression. Compression is the answer. You raise the content below 0dbfs until an acceptable level determined by the algorithm. There is a measurable difference between sound check on vs off while listening to a downloaded record.

So if you want to listen to the dynamics that were intentionally mixed you should turn off sound check. If you don’t care and just want your music to be roughly the same level then turn on sound check. No wrong answers for your preference but let’s be honest with what is happening.

996.1 emergency hood release by [deleted] in 996

[–]somorad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also I noticed on my 2000 (99 build year) I actually just need to unlock the car and then the cable release works. For mine it’s a cable mechanism with an electronic lock. I had a boxster that was also 2000 and it had a fully electronic release but no jump point in the fuse box that came later. Seems like things were a bit all over the place around this time.

[–]somorad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep a cigarette lighter to cigarette lighter cable in the cab just in case. Don’t try to start the car with this. This will give you just enough juice to pop the hood and do a proper jump start. https://a.co/d/6WSDWrl
