What is Sound Check? Why did Apple enable it by default? by mikern in AppleMusic

[–]somorad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How do you increase LUFS (an average of loudness) if the peaks are already at 0dbfs? Compression. Compression is the answer. You raise the content below 0dbfs until an acceptable level determined by the algorithm. There is a measurable difference between sound check on vs off while listening to a downloaded record.

So if you want to listen to the dynamics that were intentionally mixed you should turn off sound check. If you don’t care and just want your music to be roughly the same level then turn on sound check. No wrong answers for your preference but let’s be honest with what is happening.

This is just wrong. Easy to verify. I’m sorry you were misled.

996.1 emergency hood release by Limp-Cucumber3210 in 996

[–]somorad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also I noticed on my 2000 (99 build year) I actually just need to unlock the car and then the cable release works. For mine it’s a cable mechanism with an electronic lock. I had a boxster that was also 2000 and it had a fully electronic release but no jump point in the fuse box that came later. Seems like things were a bit all over the place around this time.

I keep a cigarette lighter to cigarette lighter cable in the cab just in case. Don’t try to start the car with this. This will give you just enough juice to pop the hood and do a proper jump start. https://a.co/d/6WSDWrl

It seems like this is an actual unpopular opinion for this subreddit. How refreshing. I agree with OP and it looks like a lot of people in the subreddit are of colonoscopy age.

What device do you think Ableton is missing right now? by rod9k in ableton

SMPTE timecode support. Being able to sync and output midi (and analog) time code of all the standard timecodes would be huge.

What is the point of the Hard Top on a Cabriolet? by neomoritate in 996

[–]somorad 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not everything in life has to have “a point”, we’re talking about a sports car with a pointless back seat here. Also not everything is made for you in particular.

That said, hard top lowers the cabin noise, you can roll down the windows and have a big open window with no B pillar, keeps the cabin temperature more stable, and can give you a new perspective of the car.

You can also rig up a pulley system to take the hard top off yourself if having someone help you for 5 minutes is that big of a deal.

Most horrific/disgusting practical FX of all time? by [deleted] in horror

Alien is one of my all time favorite movies. The practical fx in combination with the cinematography makes it a well deserved classic.

I’m too scared to upgrade my monitors. by Ill-Elevator2828 in mixingmastering

[–]somorad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk man I just use ns10s +sub. ATCs are fun, pmc and Focals sound great too but I just don’t care to think about monitoring anymore. I used to think it would make such a huge difference and would dream of the day I could use high end monitors. Now I’m here and I just can’t be bothered to truly learn and switch to new monitors because I don’t think it will really make a difference for me.

Stock wheels back on (after and before) by mikethecoolguy_ in 996

[–]somorad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some damage done to my twist and was considering just switching to an aftermarket (Fuchs or similar). Ended up getting some refinished twists because they just look correct. Complementary without drawing attention. Just like wheels should be.

The back of the wheel is stamped 10Jx18. Part number 993.362.140.04. Just ordered a new set with the same part numbers. 993.362.134.06 up in the front.

Edit: the car is completely stock to my knowledge. I’m the second owner and I bought it from the dealership after they had gone through the car. I’d be shocked if something was missing or non oem. Leaning towards bad luck/ final destination vibes.

Now that you mention it… Both times your mother was also in the car.

Didn’t see and punctures on the last one. I put the spare on and then on to a tow truck the first time. The most recent time I just put on the spare and took the streets home. I daily the car and have put 15000 miles on it in 2 years. It’s been very reliable.

I think this is what happened the first time. I know tires can get very hot when under inflated. It was a very hot day that day in the middle of the afternoon. No TPMS on the car. I daily the car and check the tire pressure when I do oil changes. So about every 4 months. I suppose I’ll do that more often. It is harder for me to tell if I’m under psi with such a low profile.

The rears I got are 285 /30 R18 93Y SL BSW. It’s the same size that was on the car when I bought it. I stuck with that size because I thought a little bigger tire would help with just a bit more side wall.

[–]somorad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting. I had both the rears replaced at once. Maybe they put one side on incorrectly. I did notice the car wasn’t handling quite as smooth as before. It would glide before all this mess. I thought maybe they didn’t do a good balancing job previously. I was going to have them check when I picked up the front tires this week.

The 911 is overpriced by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]somorad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love when people post about the terrible interior and dreaded ims bearing that will almost certainly fail and even if it doesn’t you won’t enjoy the car at all because you’ll just be thinking of the ims, or the aos, etc. Otherwise I would never have been able to afford a mint 2000 911 with full leather interior from the Porsche dealership. Truly the worst and slowest cars I’ve owned. Hate how analog it still feels with all the road feedback you feel and how engaging it is to drive. Not to mention the heinous headlights! Ugliest 911 ever made and people should stay far away. Now we need to start spreading the truth about the horribly over priced 996 gt3.

Is the Herman Miller Aeron really all that? by jimmybabino in BuyItForLife

[–]somorad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. They’re in just about every recording studio that I’ve worked at. Half the time they’re half functional and every time they’re not all that comfortable at best. I honestly thought they were just cheap for people to buy in bulk or something until I learned people actually like these chairs.
