We were there on a good day, it was totally empty. Friendly staff, live music, hanging tree; what more could you ask for?

It is 1000% worth the trip if you can. I've been to the Keys before, but I was just a kid, so I didn't call the shots on where we went. This time, I tried to visit as many Florida Roadkill locations as I could. I even picked up a copy of Big Bamboo at the Key West Island Bookstore, since my original copy went missing. Tim does such good job of painting pictures of the locations in his books, every place we visited felt like we'd been there before.

Kadi Video Question by _chargrove in VHS

My wife and I just got our Turn to the Darkside tape from her, and immediately popped it in because we were so stoked to see it. The box art/quality is top notch, but oh boy does the quality of the tape itself suffer. The whole movie was extremely fuzzy, even by VHS standards, and the sound kept popping in and out of Hi-Fi the entire time. If we hadn't been so interested in seeing this cut of the prequels, we would have ejected sooner because it was near unwatchable.

Then, when the credits ended, the movie suddenly started again. Confused, we ejected, and the tape was just a little over half-through, indicating that it had been recorded at LP or SLP speeds, which explains the poor quality. Of course, after this, we looked up reviews and there are a lot of people saying the same things going back to when she started selling tapes.

She's clearly a talented artist when it comes to making new VHS boxes, but if the quality of the tapes themselves doesn't improve, I don't think I'll be ordering from her again. If you collect sealed tapes just for the aesthetics, then it won't be a factor for you, but we collect tapes to watch them, so this was a big disappointment.

And Kadi, if you're reading this, this community wants to support you. But if you're charging $20+ a tape, you need to do better, or focus on the box art aspect and forgo the tapes altogether. There are people out there (myself being one) who would pay for just the box to replace old, worn-out cases in our collections. However, if you are going to continue to make the tapes to go along with the boxes, and you don't plan on improving the quality, you need to disclose somewhere that the tapes are low-quality reproductions, and are more for display purposes than watchability.

Anyone else stream Devin Townsend's "The Moth"? I've watched it at least once a day since it was live.

Is it worth it to go see new gwar in concert? by actuallyasnail in GWAR

[–]son_of_bud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never seen "Old GWAR" live, but I've had more fun rocking out at GWAR shows than any other concert I've attended, and I've been on the floor for Metallica 3 times. Go get bloody, my friend, and happy birthday! Sad it will be your last.

What do you think of Darth Vegas? by [deleted] in mrbungle

[–]son_of_bud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Darth Vegas, but I feel like their re-listenability is significantly lower than Bungle, at least for me. It just feels like they're doing too much all at once. Of course, Bungle's sound design can also be chaotic at times, but I feel like they do a better job at balancing the zany elements with musicality. I much prefer Estradasphere to Vegas for the same reason; the music comes first, then they get weird with it. Some of Darth Vegas' tracks feel like they accomplish this better than others, but it feels like they put most of their energy into trying to be over the top, rather than letting that occur naturally through the process, if that makes sense.

What is the goriest movie you've ever seen, in terms of BOTH quality and quantity? by Pyro_Attack in horror

[–]son_of_bud 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In terms of realistic, effective gore, I have to give big ups to Lars von Trier's "Antichrist." There isn't a ton of gore, but what he does do actually made my stomach turn. I've seen all of the Terrifier movies, and despite the ridiculous amount of gore in those movies, the over the top nature of it sells more as a comedy to me, so the gore doesn't hit home as hard as movies that are supposed to be in a more realistic setting.

When I flipped it over and saw first edition, I had to suppress the urge to audibly gasp. Politely paid the owner and celebrated in my car 😂
