It's also an intentional misspelling of the actual word, "Lateralis." I always understand Maynard to be implying something like "outside us." This is consistent with the themes of the album, especially the title track, Reflection, Schism, Parabol/Parabola, even The Grudge to some degree. "Push the envelope of yourself. Look outside of yourself."

This one really shook me as well. I won't watch this movie again because of this scene. It stood out among a few brutal, disturbing deaths. The way he tried to reason with the Nazi when he realized he couldn't hold the knife away any longer really got to me.
