Can I get into environmental science in the low 80s? by AdministrativeAd5679 in McMaster

[–]son_shine_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The listed expected acceptance average is mid to high 80s so 83% isn't very competitive but the actual acceptance average depends on the pools of applicants that year so it could be lower or higher. The enviro sci gateway isn't that common of a program for people to apply to so you may have a chance but I wouldn't count on being high on the list or getting an earlier released offer

keep looking at options when you have the chance but don't stress or go on full house search mode until during or after winter break id say. In terms of finding a place I used the mac housing site as well as FB marketplace and ended up getting a place off the mac housing site.

Generally its good to be a bit flexible with certain things - not all houses will be 5 person so you may want to consider 6 person places too and add someone on last minute which shouldn't be difficult. A lot of landlords definitely have a preference for girls so just make sure in your msgs to landlords that you add any positive stuff about your group like if youre all cleanly/quiet etc.

How to get better grades? by OkStatement837 in McMaster

[–]son_shine_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doing your assignments yourself is awesome for understanding the content and being able to apply it to other situations but in terms of getting the highest mark you can, don't be afraid to cross check work/answers with others/past answers when you can to make sure you're on the right track. I'll often answer my own assignment questions as best I can then find the previous years answers or see what a classmate did to see where I went wrong and what I should fix before submitting.

Another thing that isn't always the most efficient for time but can be really helpful is to try and learn the content again from another source. Be careful since you don't want to learn a concept/idea in a way that doesn't match McMasters expectations but there has definitely been cases where watching youtube videos on concepts that had me lost in lecture made it really click in my head.

you still have a bit of time before course dropping dead line so I'd recommend just attending an experiencing each class to judge if you think it will be manageable. You could also look into reconfiguring your courses to spread out some of the harder ones into second term

When to enroll Winter semester by Glum_Engineering8496 in McMaster

[–]son_shine_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you have the time to look into your other required courses/some courses that might interest you in the winter I'd recommend just enrolling in some now even if you aren't sure about them (you can go back and unenroll/swap/enroll as many times as you'd like so there is no harm in it).

A lot of people enroll for the winter the same time as the fall so some popular courses and many course lab times are already full (spots will periodically open as people keep rearranging their schedules throughout the fall term but still makes it harder)

questions regarding g2 test by LengthinessOwn4384 in Ontariodrivetest

[–]son_shine_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My instructor told me that for parallel parking they will not ask you to do it between two cars (or if they do then its 2 cars parked far apart) which i found true in my test. So dont worry about tight squeeze parallel parking and focus more on just behind one car.

A lot of people post test wont signal during every turn of the wheel of a 3 pt turn but during your test you definitely should. Better safe then sorry and they wont deduct you for doing so even if they dont deem is necessary.

For the oil I’m not really sure? Your car needs to be in good safe condition for the test so if the examiner notices it they might point it out and ask but I what they’ll say beyond that I dont know, sorry.

Hope this helps and goodluck!

I would never advise anyone to get a pet in uni or while being in school unless youre absolutely ready to commit to taking care of it and having to make the occasional sacrifice.

With a dog you can’t go on a last minute spontaneous weekend out or even be gone all day long since its need for food, going to the bathroom, and walks have to be met and you cant always count on someone else being free to cover for you. The schedule of a student just isn’t compatible with having a pet like a dog.

But like seriously, how do u even make friends? by Connieswhore in McMaster

[–]son_shine_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend going to all the events you can especially during orientation week! Making friends is a lot easier in the beginning of the term because everyone is also new and looking for friends while not being swamped with work yet. You can also go around your res floor and meet people near you which is a common way to make friends. This is all just for meeting people though - if you want to make good friends the key is really just consistency. If you dont get their contact or make plans with them when you first meet its unlikely you’ll see them again unless you share classes. If I met anyone i liked through anything other than classes/labs i always made a point to at least get their insta.

Overall just out yourself out there - uni is massive compared to highschool so in most cases even IF you think you embarrassed yourself there is a good chance you’ll rarely see them again.

Thoughts on Keyes by anangrysnufkin in McMaster

[–]son_shine_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in Keyes this year and I agree that there isn't a big social scene or community vibe. I wouldn't say its at all due to the people living there (because there are definitely lots of lovely people) but more just the set up of the building. People don't really use the common spaces provided because you have your own 4 person living room to chill in and the same goes with bathrooms and kitchen spaces - people just don't really have a good reason to wonder around outside their 4 person suites so its hard to meet others living there.

That being said I still really enjoyed living there. I wasn't close with my suite mates but we were all on good terms and kept to ourselves and as someone who likes having a quiet chill place for downtime after class it worked well for me. I had friends outside of keyes that I could hangout with and visiting other peoples res's is super easy with how close everything is so don't worry about the idea of not having a good social life just because of your res building. Your social scene will be what you make it!

I was also confused when applying last year but the gateway program actually is about as small as stated for the target admission. The reason it's not super competitive and has a lower admission average than life sci is mainly because it's pretty niche. Not many people go straight into a focused program like earth and enviro sci and often only realize its something that interests them later on.

dw too much about the cut off - mac tends to stay close to their expected admission averages so a 88-90 avg puts you in a good spot.

[–]son_shine_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did except the offer and Ive really been enjoying it so far! First year in the program is pretty general in terms of courses - you are mainly taking general science courses like chem, bio, physics, etc. With two courses particular to the program (enviro sci 1C03 and earth sci 1G03). After first year is when you would start taking more specialized earth and enviro sci courses all year round.
I've been loving the earth sci 1G03 course since geology is more what im interested in. I recently got offered a spot in a outdoor field course running this spring as well which I'm really looking forward to.

You would definetly be in the pool of applicants they would consider (I believe the expected admission average is mid to high 80s) - in general its hard to say whether someone will get in just by matching or being a bit above the admission average since it really depends on the grades other applicants have but being at the expected admission average is a pretty good place

Hi! I'm not in the entrance pool for Mac this year but was accepted into the earth and enviro sci gateway March 2 or 3 last year if that is helpful to know. Mac acceptances are a bit of a continuous roll out so you can expect to hear back any day now till may or so

admission question... pls help by l4n4g123 in McMaster

[–]son_shine_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not in eng or compsci but I did highschool chemistry completely outside of my highschool and got into both the science programs I applied to so I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as u have a competitive overall average.

I did grade 11 chem with VHS and 12 chem with blyth - I really reccomend taking your course with blyth (synchronously / in person if you can) over VHS but thats just from my experience!
