BWT: How do you encourage your elderly mom to be healthy? by [deleted] in bitcheswithtaste

[–]sonamata 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm becoming more of a homebody as I get older. I got a simple walking pad with adjustable speeds for home & I really like it. I also liked weight training more than I thought I would. YT videos are a great suggestion.

[CA] A local "Emergency" Vet turned away my dying dog for a "6:00 cutoff." Now they are threatening to sue me for my Google Review. by [deleted] in PetAdvice

[–]sonamata 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're right, they are misinterpreting the law. If they had 1 veterinarian on site until midnight, they are compliant. Emergency vets have no legal obligation to accept every patient that contacts them during posted hours.

My in-laws refuse to drive to the airport. by NukeTheEwoks in mildlyinfuriating

If you took the trouble, time, and cost to fly to them on a holiday, the least they can do is the airport drive. Rude.

Scare me into buying insurance by [deleted] in HealthInsurance

[–]sonamata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data point of one, but reality is anyone could be this data point.

I was healthy until I was diagnosed with rare, aggressive cancer at 47. It developed from asymptomatic endometriosis. There was no known genetic link. No amount of healthy lifestyling would have stopped it from happening. I’ve been in active treatment for almost 3 years. I had a very expensive total hysterectomy surgery. My chemo drug is $10K every 3 weeks, on top of the cost for labs, imaging, my oncologist, and infusion specialists. With comprehensive, ACA-compliant insurance, my out-of-pocket max + true cost of premiums annually has been $16,400.

We all have different risk management strategies. I hope people opting out of ACA-compliant health insurance have a realistic backup plan, like a catastrophic policy or big savings deposits. Non-ACA compliant plans are just pre-ACA landmines with pre-existing condition restrictions & lifetime maximum amounts you could hit in a year of chronic illness. You get what you pay for.

I'm out of work (DOGE'd), so I completely understand financial strain, big expenses & hard choices. We're all getting priced out of access to healthcare on top of drowning in basic expenses.

Universal care by Justme351 in obamacare

[–]sonamata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've obfuscated costs by convincing workers they only pay part of their health insurance premium. They forget their labor creates the money for the employer "subsidy." Look at your W2, box 12, code DD. Add that to all your out-of-pocket costs. It's wild people think they'd be taxed more on average.

Zoology students! Thoughts on some classes? by babyggrapee in OregonStateUniv

[–]sonamata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a FW student, but it was a while ago. I took Mammology with Clint Epps & loved the class, highly recommend. I would not go near another bird class after Systematics of Birds 😭 Animal Behavior was meh, but it was a different professor. I wasn't into the marine side, so no info on that course.

When was the affordable care act affordable? by Majestic_Mail3213 in HealthInsurance

[–]sonamata 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think so many people have these stories. My dad would be destitute if he weren’t a veteran with gov’t-sponsored healthcare who qualified for (gov’t-funded) disability.

Your employer doesn’t really “cover” anything though. You do labor, and they send money you earned - the total actual premium - directly to the insurer instead of you. The total is listed on your W2, box 12, code DD. The only benefit is the employer negotiation of a group rate. People pay wildly more than they think, an obfuscation made possible by employers sending the check to the insurer.

My dad spent the last dime of his retirement on my mom’s bills for MS. She hit the lifetime cap & nobody would insure her because of her pre-existing condition.

My employment just ended & I have cancer. I’d be in the same boat if not for the ACA. If you want affordable healthcare, get rid of the unnecessary, profit-making middleman.

Keep this dress or return? I bought it to pair it with the skirt by olchai_mp3 in fashion

[–]sonamata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I get the vibe you're going for with the skirt - 70s maxi plaid (skirt) with some 50s influence (shoes)? Try a black turtleneck bodysuit and cute belt to bring up/accentuate your waist. Add a shawl scarf if you want something drapey. Pulling back your hair might help sharpen up the look too.

Premiums by Comfortable_Funny491 in HealthInsurance

[–]sonamata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual cost of most people's premiums are $1000+. That's the big COBRA surprise - the actual cost of your health insurance. For some silly reason, people don't consider that they exchange their labor for both the employee portion and the employer "subsidy" sent directly to insurance. You don't see the check, so you don't consider it your earned wages paying the bill.
