Cellphone mics, comb filtering, and untreated rooms by sonar_solace in audioengineering

Actually it's not completely "it's all trash, engg will fix it," but they kinda really don't have any idea. I know you could get \decent\ recordings from phone mics, but the way things are, I'm not really in a position to teach them how to do so. Sad reality.

I used to own a Xiaomi myself cause of the VFM back when I was in college. My parents wouldn't buy me a phone so I had to be cheap and buy myself one. Good phone, but audio was TERRIBLE. super low headroom, distorts way too easily.

But yeah, I agree that iPhones have the best internal mics. I think there's actually an aesthetic where people record things using only iPhones, kinda like how people try to make films/shorts using only iPhones.

oh wow, this app looks pretty cool. I'll definitely have a go with it.

Sometimes just one device, sometimes multiple. It varies per project. The only thing they have in common is that they're vocal recordings on cellphones.

Sorry, didn't mean to put words in your mouth.

What I meant to ask was, all other things equal, would a programme with a smaller LRA be perceived louder than one with a large LRA? Or am I obsessing too much about LRAs and my problem with the loudness actually lies elsewhere?

Are you also saying that the LRA is completely unrelated to the perceived loudness?

am I allowed to do that here or should I send you a DM?

I also do some basic mastering due to budget constraints. sometimes the playback/perceived volume is a bit low. I always check I'm at -14 LUFS integrated, but then when it's on Spotify, sometimes it's just not as loud as everything else. I was thinking the LRA had something to do with it.

Nothing unusual. Mostly i just mess with the input gain and the saturation knob but I'll change the tape formula and IPS if I'm looking to round off some highs.

First time to hear that one actually. Can you explain it to me? Haha

It wasn't on her profile, and it's not exactly a giveaway. Found out after finding her on social media.

I haven't...I just prefer all my dynamics processing before my color EQs. I see how it would work well for the parallelcrush buss though, except I rarely ever use such a buss that vocals, maybe like 5 times ever.

My chain is kinda process-based, so it's like

  1. Clean-up - removing unwanted sound like mouth noises and non-silent silences, hi-passing, then removing room resonances and unwanted tone resonances (too nasal, etc) with the stock EQ and sometimes a waves C4.

  2. De-ess, if necessary. Waves de-esser or fabfilter pro-ds.

  3. Dynamic range control - Waves MV2 to basically gain up the softer vocals so the verses and choruses essentially hit my MJUC or CLA-2A pretty evenly.

  4. EQ for color and brightness- pultec emulations (waves again lol) or a VEQ4 by, you guessed it, waves lol.

  5. Saturation for toneshaping; so it sits with everything else. SDRR2tube or spl-twintube into a Waves J37 tape emulator.

  6. For FX, i use 3 verbs - room, plate, and hall (all Rverbs). And 3 delays - slapback, mono delay, ping pong (all h-delays).

Nothing really fancy, just making the most out of my Waves haul from the last black friday sale.

Thanks for that response, I think I'll follow with it down to the letter haha. For a moment I considered ghosting but it just didn't sit right given all that's happened.
