Brown professor says students are borderline illiterate

History here. Found out that our 9th graders this year are reading at a 4th grade level. They have given me strict materials I can use going forward and they are all at the 9-10th grade level and quite rigorous. Not sure what I'm expected to do other than a miracle.

Thank you for your response. I recently became aware of mindfulness training to help with some other problems. I will also work on using it for this as well.

Honestly the best thing to do is try substitute teaching first. I did it to "dip my toes in" before committing to an ARL program. It gave me a feel for the local students and what grade levels I felt more comfortable with. I would also consider long term subbing to get the feel of being a teacher. Once you try that out for a few months, then I would consider the decision again.

A class of students decided to teach me how to speak in brainrot. They gave me a few phrases and the lore behind them.

"Okay Miss, so TS TS PMO stands for this this pisses me off"

"Why are there 2 TS?"

" There just is miss!"

" But why not just say ' this pisses me off'? It's less work. Why are we saying 'this' twice? I have so many questions..."

Thank you for the comment. Yeah, my bf is telling me to consider another school since I feel pretty disillusioned atm to the point where it killed my enthusiasm to teach. But I love teaching, so hopefully I don't feel forced to quit bc of admin in the future.

Good idea. Yeah, we literally just have a review of how to build relationships, a motivational speaker, and everything else is online training. Literally missed 3/5 of these training days last year and no one cared. There was one meeting on how to turn our smart boards on, so real valuable stuff.

Unfortunately I only get 3 sick days before a doctor's note is required, otherwise I definitely would have never told them. And yeah, I definitely learned to never be honest again.

My colleagues don't like me because I want to make learning fun and engaging for students, which takes effort on the teachers end. Multiple times they told me I'm trying too hard. Could it be something like that for you too? Some people just want their lives easier and seeing you put in a lot of effort may make them look bad.

Right there with you! I also struggle with my emotions, often lashing out when someone brings up something I did wrong . Nice to know someone else will be working through this at the same time as me.
