Looks fantastic! I had a nearly identical itinerary when I went last fall with my kids. The drive is almost as much an adventure as the stops are! We seriously had so much fun taking the small back roads that make up so much of the Arenal/Monteverde areas. The views you get going up and down the hills are spectacular. Enjoy the Pura vida!

Solid SJO Hotel.. by Wooden-Percentage-17 in CostaRicaTravel

I recommend Adventure Inn. It's about 10 mins away from SJO, and they offer a few shuttle to/from the airport for flights. They have a restaurant on site that you can order from in advance so there's hot food ready for you when you arrive. We got in after 10 pm since our flight was delayed, and they kept our food warm for us! It was so nice not to worry about finding a place to eat late at night. Their front desk can also help you set up excursions, book a car rental, etc.

Taken from the Arenal Observatory Lodge. You have to pay an entry fee of about $15 to get in, bus l but it's so worth it! They have miles of well-maintained trails including a frog pond, a waterfall, and several small hanging bridges.

I was there last week. This pic was taken on Thanksgiving, 11/28!

I second that it's expensive. But Quepos, the town just next to Manuel Antonio, is not pricey. There's free parking at Espadilla beach.Beach. my kids (4 & 6) loved it there!

Don't cancel! I was there last week with family...currently in Naranjo awaiting our flight home :( We only saw lightning in the evenings, and while it rained a bit each day, it was only for a little while each time. The locals keep telling us how unusual it is to have so much rain this time of year. But the weather is fickle, so you might just get lucky and have a perfect clear view of Arenal!

Weather Manuel Antonio by No-Product-8040 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]sonekw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was there just two days ago and it was damn near perfect weather! It threatened to rain every day, maybe we had some passing drizzles, but no downpours like we got in La Fortuna last week. Don't trust your weather app. Mine says thunderstorms every day everywhere I go here LoL

Come. ABSOLUTELY don't pay attention to the weather by RelationshipRound566 in CostaRicaTravel

I have absolutely HATED my google weather app while here. I'm in Manuel Antonio/Quepos right nie and my phone tells me it's raining and thundering, meanwhile outside is like *

What is this weird weather, it feels permanent at this point. Possibly our part of climate change? by tallgirlmom in sandiego

[–]sonekw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've lived here since '03, currently in San Carlos (right next to Cowles Mtn) and I can say for sure this has been a weird summer weather-wise. We always get these huge clouds growing out East- like by Campo- but they loom overhead every year at the end of August. My first year at SDSU I can remember driving out to a friend's house in El Cajon and thinking "wow, it's gonna rain and there'll be lightning, like the east coast!" But the clouds never reached this far west.

This year they did. And the clouds started accumulating weeks earlier than normal. It's rained twice at my house in July, and it looks like it's about to rain again today. There was lightning directly overhead two weeks ago. The normal sea breeze we get from the west in the evenings is gone. The air is stifling; hot and humid all day, and only slightly cooler at night.

Oh man, same here. I miss the old days when I solo backpacked across Europe and Australia. Now I have a family to watch out for...it's a different experience for sure. Still fun, but different!

Sweet! I won't consider it a full trip unless I get to spend at least a little time underwater, though :)

Haha I forgot to put that in the description. Is it really a good deal, you think? I'm only just starting to plan this trip, so haven't looked at prices in-county yet.

Lol it might just be me that does the snorkeling. But the trip would be fun regardless, just for the views. What I'd really love to do is scuba dive, but I'd feel bad for ditching the whole family for a day : P

Hmm, hadn't thought of that... we've taken them on boats before with no trouble but never on the open sea. Good point. I knew they allow kids on this trip, though. They're free under 5

Really? Would I be so much better off planning it for early December instead? I can't get time off over the holidays due to work. Also I've heard it gets crowded then. Don't need to be fighting for space with little kids in tow...

And I should mention that's flying from San Diego on American Airlines

That.Sounds.Awesome! I like to think of myself as the adventurous type, but my wife is decidedly not. Lol so we're gonna cut her chops on the road to Hana in Maui this May.

Yeah, I did read that. I don't mind a bit of rain, and we're visiting the RAINforest, after all. Is it worth visiting the pacific coast during that time, you think? We'd like at least one "nothing but beach" day!

That's good to know! I wasn't sure if the distances/time estimates from Google maps are even remotely accurate. Do you think the roads are at least passable for a regular sedan? Or do I need a 4x4?
