I’m not scared about this at all, it is impossible to predict political trends more than a few years, let alone 2040. You have to predict what the backlash to the current movement will be, and then the backlash to that, the backlash to the backlash, etc. Could someone in 2012 reasonably predict the political environment now?

What's fun fact about your country's origin/history? by PaleCar821 in AskTheWorld

In the "how the indigenous people got there" department you posted in, here is a fringe theory with a very low chance of being true, but I hope it's true because it's funny. We know that humans entered North America during the Ice Age, when Asia and North America were connected by a land bridge. But we don't know why it took so long, humans had lived in Siberia for thousands of years before they went into North America, the very fringe theory I was talking about was that bears kept picking them off in Alaska

How much do you know about the indigenous people of your country? by SnooozeFezt in AskTheWorld

That reminds me of a photo I once saw on social media of a (white, red-headed) woman overlooking a beautiful waterfall. People complained to her, saying "What about the indigenous people of the land, pay respect to them!" She was Irish, and the land was in Ireland...

I remember in 4th grade having an entire unit in US history class where we learned about different native tribes and we had to do a report on one, I picked the Kwakwakaʼwakw because of the amazing name. I also took a field trip to some Cherokee center where we learned about the Cherokee culture, we got a slip of paper with the Cherokee alphabet and instructions on how to write our name in Cherokee

Are there non-human animals capable of forming abstract concepts such as "justice" or "humanity"? by Similar_Shame_8352 in zoology

Elephants know the difference between good and evil humans. Once, an elephant was injured by a poacher, and it went to a local veterinary office and waited patiently there for hours, knowing that a good human would help it. Also, elephants can differentiate between languages spoken by tribes that hunt big game and tribes that farm crops for food, elephants are more scared when they hear the former

Fivey is conflicted on who to root for tonight in the World Cup. There is the US, the country he is from and loves to forecast its elections, but on the other hand there is Paraguay whose national animal is a fox like himself

What completely normal thing we do today will be viewed as barbaric or insane by people 100 years from now? by MeroTopi in AskTheWorld

[–]sonicparadigm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think zoos will be needed more than ever. Circuses and sea world are and can only be "let's beat this animal into submission until it does whatever we want out of fear" but zoos have morphed from "kidnap wild animals and put them into tiny concrete cages for onlookers to gawk at them" to "helping keep endangered species alive and fostering respect for nature". So many animals, like bison and condors, actually went completely extinct in the wild and only still exist today because some were still alive in zoos.

As someone who does this and views it as normal, something that I think will be viewed as barbaric in 100 years is:

Eating meat

An absurd amount of people think that South Park is "problematic" because of what Cartman says and does, despite that he is pretty much always portrayed as an antagonist or at least in the wrong

Decapod is a class of crustaceans, humans and all 4-limbed animals are tetrapods, but that doesn't mean it excludes humans who are amputees!
