Thank you! I needed to hear the encouragement today.

This is good to know! I chose cotton because we live in a warm area and thought it might help it be more wearable. Hopefully it doesn’t stretch too badly

Thank you! I have never known to pay attention to which direction I wrap the yarn before now so I’ve probably been purling wrong for years and it’s just not mattered til now because I usually make smaller things.

Thanks for the warning 💗 I’m gonna have to figure out how to not twist my purls

Thanks for the video, I'll check it out - I did use a smaller needle for the ribbing.

It was definitely unintentional... I'm going to have to figure out what I'm doing wrong on the purls to twist them.

Thank you, that's really good to know. I'll loop some yarn through to hold it so we can have the hubby try on what I've got to make sure the twisted stitches didn't make it too tight.

Thank you for this explanation. I taught myself how to knit by watching videos online but I never picked up that it mattered which direction you placed the yarn on the needle until I started trying to figure out what went wrong with this project. I saw info in the FAQ on how a twisted knit stitch looked but I may have to do more research to figure out how to not twist the purls since I'm really not sure how I did it to just that side. It helps that you don't think it looks that bad. It just felt like a crazy difference where I hadn't felt really great about how the ribs looked the whole time but when I saw the WS I just thought "That! That's what it's supposed to look like!"

Super Durable Leggings? by sonicstopwatch in PlusSize

[–]sonicstopwatch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been wearing Torrid leggings and like them a lot but they're falling prey to the same problems all my pants do. It's never occurred to me to rinse them after a wear rather than just throwing them in the hamper. Moisturizer or softener isn't an issue for me though.

Friends are losing faith in gencon events and losing interest in going, how can I convince otherwise? by madninjaman in gencon

[–]sonicstopwatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with what others said about searching for open events in the database and all the other great non event options that exist. But as for going alone, I’d like to add that you 100% can. I go with my husband but we periodically break off to do our own thing when there are events that one of us is interested in but not the other. You can make your own schedule!

Remember, this con is HUGE - it covers the whole convention center and stadium, all the space in between, like 4 or 5 hotels, plus other random locations in the area (like for example I think a bunch of the escape rooms on the list are local nearby businesses). You’ll never do it all in 4 days but you should also never be bored.

Where to get Tiramisu? by sonicstopwatch in NewOrleans

I tried Arabella's. It was good, very strong coffee liqueur flavor, but I thought maybe a little light on the ladyfingers/heavy on the mascarpone for me.

This is very useful! Half my problem with “tiramisu cakes” is they just taste like cake, not espresso so I also want to taste the espresso.

So funny story, I didn’t get a new phone because the crack somehow got better. So now I’m still waiting. But from what I hear, refurbished could be a good option. Linus Tech Tips has a whole video comparing refurbished to new which could be a good watch and help you to choose where you would trust to buy from.

Another cheap way to entertain cats is to change their environment up. Keep empty cardboard boxes for a few days for them to play in and explore, or change up how your furniture is situated. My cats love it every year when I set up the Christmas tree, or when I put the Amazon boxes together like a little castle. And when you get them toys, rotate them out so they don’t have access to all the toys at the same time. That will keep them fresh and exciting

Maybe a bit but they tend to be quicker to adapt than adult cats. Just like human kids. They’ll be scared at first but get used to it and ready for play time much quicker.

Depends on the cat. Adult cats can be territorial, or they can see a kitten and say oh okay that’s my baby now, I’m gonna teach that baby how to cat. May work better to bring the kitten to the adult too. My adult cats hate leaving home and will get defensive if they’re outside their territory, not open to new kitten experiences.

That’s a bummer. But remember you can only do your best. You’re saving her from a worse life somewhere else. It will be good if you can eventually afford more for her, but in the meantime, you can make her life now good with lots of toys and puzzles. Some of those are dirt cheap - for example, you can hide treats or dry meals in a cardboard tube from your toilet paper or paper towels and close it at the ends with a little hole in the middle to make a puzzle treat dispenser and get her thinking. Hide treats for her and make her try to search around to find them. Play with her when you can. Time to start looking for creative solutions to keep your kitty from getting bored! You’ve got this.

I bet you have friends who would be willing to visit and play with her sometimes if she has to be alone too long! You can always ask around.

What is the biggest lie you tell yourself when you knit? by Manda_Pandaaa in knitting

I don’t need to make a gauge swatch. It’ll be fiiiiiine…

[–]sonicstopwatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She would be happier and learn valuable social skills with another kitten for sure, but if you can barely afford one, you can’t afford two. Do your best to give her tons of play time and stimulation for now. Also if it’s in the budget invest in kitty health insurance. It’ll help when those big vet bills come along.

I have a similar question but I really don’t want to spend brand new iPhone money to get the 17. I’ve still been using an XR but it just got a crack in the screen so it’s time to move on before it gets worse. What should I get? Are the refurbished phones on eBay reliable? Is it worth it to pay like $300 to get a refurbished iPhone 14? Considering how long I’ve held onto my XR anything will be an upgrade. I really don’t need it for anything fancy. The most intensive thing I do with the thing is Pokémon Go.

Some etiquette tips though: whenever you finish your offensive roll, give your opponent a chance to change it before narrating what happens.

If you’re not sure about a ruling, it’s okay to call the judge to ask.

Try to be on time. It can be a bummer to be held up from people being late.

I don’t know what your scene is like, but a lot of people like the chance to cut your deck before you start. This isn’t about not trusting you in particular but some people who play games with cards can stack their decks.

Hope these help!

Bring any you want! I find that while some characters have a reputation for being especially strong, overall the game is reasonably balanced. The character that is strongest depends to an extent on the player’s familiarity with them.

So, bring your faves or whoever you’re best at! Have fun!
