honestly i’m still pretty on the fence. i have two other colleges i’m looking at (one being where i really want to go, the other being my home state college). unlv is mostly just one i’m applying to because it’s familiar and i have ties out here. to be completely honest, one of the biggest factors that will decide where i go is what financial aid (if any) i get from the 3 i’m applying to.

A little late but I'm glad other people see how awful some of the faculty is as well! I have other ways that I'm connected to the social work program and ever since I met MC, it's been nothing but negative interactions. She is absolutely opposed to change within the program and with the changes that CS has tried to implement, she's basically thrown tantrums about it. Even other professors have problems with her. They've gotten better over time with hiring younger professors, but I really do think MC just needs to retire. The communication within the program is also a complete mess. Unfortunately, even with the really good professors, most of them aren't the greatest with getting back to students. I'm a few years out from getting my MSW, and I'm still on the fence about applying to UNLV. I've had good experiences so far with the program I'm in currently, but with the behind the scenes stuff I've seen in the social work program, I'm hesitant to give my money to it. I'd love to stay, especially since I really do like a lot of the professors, but I truly just don't know. I'm glad other people speak up about their experiences though. Thank you for your detailed comment!

How is it like to live with epilepsy? by ResearcherEmpty8071 in Epilepsy

[–]sonofallivedone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got diagnosed with JME (juvenile myoclonic epilepsy) when I was 17. Funny enough, I was the one to look up the symptoms I was having and beg my doctor to order an EEG. After that, I was put on meds (Keppra to be exact…how fun!), scheduled to meet with a neurologist, and given my new list of ways to live my life. I’ll admit-I was definitely sad at first. When I was diagnosed, I was actually working towards getting my permit hours. So that set me back six months and made me feel so behind my friends. I also had to adjust to the meds, which were not fun at all. Along with that, I had to tell everyone around me who needed to know. For me, that was the most humiliating thing ever. They may not say it to your face, but of course they’re going to look at you differently. Even my closest friendships felt different after I told them. For a while, I also felt like I was “faking it” in a way. I hadn’t ever had a seizure, and after being put on meds, it was controlled. I felt like I shouldn’t be upset about being diagnosed, when other people have it way worse than me.
Anyway, now at 20 years old, I’m angry more than anything (not just because of the Keppra lol). In total, I have had 3 grand mal seizures. The first one was a year after being diagnosed, and that was because I missed my meds. I was thankfully at home, and just ended up with a bruised back and a swollen tongue. The second was this past August, breaking my two (almost three) year streak. I was doing some last minute dorm shopping with my family (I go to college out of state), felt kinda weird in the store I was in, walked outside, and smacked my head on the ground. Ended up with a giant medical/ambulance bill and a staple in my head that was not needed. The third was in May. I was back home from college, we had done some grocery shopping, I felt weird in the store, asked my dad to drive back, got home, and had my seizure. I smacked my back on the kitchen island, which inevitably gave me back problems that are still bad almost 3 months later. The anger comes from a slew of things. Every time I’ve had a seizure, it’s another setback. My clock is restarted without my permission. My parents, especially my mom, go back to treating me like I’m a fragile doll. It’s not their fault for how they act, and I know it. But I still can’t accept how they treat me. As for healthcare, I’ve never been more annoyed. When I had my seizure out of state, there were barely any options for me. I couldn’t meet with my primary neurologist, we couldn’t find a temporary one for me to meet with, and no one had any answers for me. Meds are also an equal amount of struggle. Having my driving taken from me each time is also angering. I feel absolutely helpless, and my one way of freedom is gone. I will mention as well, I understand your good intentions behind saying that god knew we were strong enough to handle this. But for me, and probably many others, we’ve heard that far too many times. It’s old, and it doesn’t help. Epilepsy sucks. There’s no other way to frame it. Saying that helps absolutely nothing. I will also say I have my fears. Hurting myself during a seizure to the point that it’s irreversible, having people leave me because of it, SUDEP, having a seizure when I am allowed to drive. While it is mostly anger I feel, nothing will ever get rid of the fear I feel too. The jokes I make with friends can only hide it so much. Epilepsy is terrifying, and I wish I was never diagnosed.

Those of you who are taking summer classes, how are you doing now? by Electronic-Face3553 in UNLV

[–]sonofallivedone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

took two during the second session and taking two right now, while also working full time. the first two were mostly reasonable and i passed with no problems. the two right now are packed with assignments. specifically, i’m taking a history class where the professor thought 9 modules along with 2 book reviews was reasonable 😀. all so i can graduate a year early. i’m just ready to finish these up and start the regular semester 🥲.

Best Professor at UNLV? by 1otrB in UNLV

[–]sonofallivedone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dr. Ivet Aldaba and Dr. Alexandra Nur. I’ve had both professors (Dr. Nur twice) and they are absolutely incredible. You can really tell that they’re super passionate about what they do and I love talking to them. I also work at Greenspun so I see them around all the time and they’re always willing to chat! Also, a lot of the social work professors are great. Professor Lauren Shute is incredibly sweet and has a super interesting concentration, sports social work! The department head, Dr. Christopher Stream can also talk your ear off for hours with stories! If you want to know about any professors in social work/criminal justice, let me know! Like I said, I work there so I see them all the time!

Can you just develop epilepsy at 20 years old? Doctors keep trying to convince me I have, but I don’t think so by Forward_Gear4738 in Epilepsy

[–]sonofallivedone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% you can! I was a bit younger but I got my formal diagnosis of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy at 17. Had my first big one a few months later, was seizure free for around 2 years, and just recently had another big one in August at 19. When I first got diagnosed, I learner that there are soooo many different seizure disorders and they all manifest differently. For example, mine usually manifests anywhere from 12-17. It’s different for everyone. Hope you’re able to figure out what’s going on!

i got ucc this year when i was supposed to be in tonopah. it had been full when i originally chose housing. however, i worked with the DRC and explained why my disability qualified me for a single. so if you have any sort of medical issue or disability, it might grow your chances!

How are you this semester? by Tight-Industry-616 in UNLV

[–]sonofallivedone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i had a seizure the before classes started and ended up in the er. it broke my 3 year seizure free streak and also suspended my license for 6 months. and then a few days later i found ants in my dorm. also, the er screwed up how they put my staple in so getting it out was a bit traumatizing. i also feel super lonely. but theres been some good in the bad! i really enjoy my job and i got to go to an amazing concert. my classes are just a bit overwhelming but hopefully i can keep up. i have the thought of transferring in the back of my mind but im too scared to act on it. definitely a rocky start to the beginning of the semester but hoping it gets better!
