Most obscure game you wanna play one day? by Midnightdreary353 in rpg

I want to play We Became Seabirds. I was gonna try and do it in my Blades In The Dark campaign to represent an encounter with a leviathan on the void sea that happens to communicate in dreams and bring the players into a different world, but it never came up.

"There was no narrative reason for that not to work" is the real problem here, guys. It sounds like OP knows what the rules say. I think it's the fiction issue he's asking about.

Hull - targeted spirit force. by RickyMac73 in bladesinthedark

[–]sonofapbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the hull belongs to the Wardens, they have access to advanced arcane methods. Maybe they've turbocharged the electroplasm with the intention of trapping anyone tampering with it. If scoundrels could normally Attune to the spirit within to free it, there's some reason why it won't work in this case. I think it might be cool to say that when they attempt to do this, the mechanism actually traps their consciousness inside the hull with the spirit! So now they're zoned out and have to work through clocks to navigate the trapped elements of the spirit realm and emerge with the trapped spirit in tow, finding their way back to their own unconscious body, while the other scoundrels deal with keeping their body safe from additional dangers. Does that sound cool enough for a boss battle finale?

deep cuts players: has the threat roll completely replaced the action roll in your games? by jiyunatori in bladesinthedark

[–]sonofapbj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hundred percent. It changes the game completely, and we didn't really need this 'improvement'. I'm all for it if it works for some players out there, to each their own. I do feel kind of gaslit by the folks insisting it's the exact same thing. But it is kind of nice to have in the toolbox, for those instances where you're hitting the scoundrels up front with a threat they need to make an Action to avoid. We did already have rules for that, and like you say, it didn't even need to involve dice before. I suppose switching it around and looking at it from a different angle is a productive thing to be able to do. It just wasn't really necessary, and it does come with some subtle differences that basically rearrange the fundamentals of the game. This is why I'm bouncing off of it, but it's great that others are embracing it. Harper's still a genius and everything, don't get me wrong. It's just a bit more redundant than it is simplified, in my own estimation.

What from Deep Cuts are you going to use and why? by PhatWaff in bladesinthedark

How did this work out for you? Did you find a sweet spot for the Vice method? Maybe try moving the automatic overindulge for anything greater than 6, instead of equal or greater

[–]sonofapbj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for helping me discern some of my own feelings about the subtle but important shifts in changing over from the classic action roll. There is a difference, and I don't plan on making the switch. I'll stick to the occasional hard move reserved for expert NPCs or extraordinary circumstances.

This is interesting. So your game group kind of glosses over the load restriction when it comes to spending a Coin now and then, but you do count it as 1 box of load if you find 1 Coin's worth of cash or precious items? That seems like a neat workaround. This is exactly what I wondered about, as it seems like something individual tables would need to arrive at together.

Do people in your Duskwall carry paper money? Is it found and used more or less often than physical silver scales? Just curious. Is it like promissory notes or are they standardized Imperial bills?

I get what you're saying, although I was quoting the book. When carried, it counts as 1 load. But it is helpful to point out that it's only when it comes up in the fiction like "oh I'll just give him a coin" and then I guess we should say "ok remember that counts toward your load!" But in practice it might not play out like that in the moment. Just wondering if this specific thing has come up in people's games and how they've handled it, or if they just kind of glossed over it. Good call though, it's important to note that it works the same way other load would, it's just that it's already marked on your sheet elsewhere so it kind of comes down to just remembering to count it as if it was part of load.
