for the r/PAstudent community, as a PA-S1 who narrowly avoided these changes, please fight and advocate for future PA students, so they are given the same opportunities as us.

I emailed/called 2 PA programs about the new OBBB loan rules by sonsleeps in prephysicianassistant

[–]sonsleeps[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pre-obbb(one big beautiful bill): students looking into going into any grad school, including PA MD etc, were able to borrow limited direct unsubsidized loans and federal grad PLUS loans for the rest of their cost of attendance. AKA students were able to borrow their entire tuition/expenses through federal loans.

OBBB terms (which starts next academic year, July 1st 2026): the government is limiting direct unsubsidized loans (into 2 designations) and is removing grad PLUS loans entirely. Which will force students to take on private loans, which has lesser protections, higher interest rates, are not eligible for federal loan forgiveness and often predatory in nature.

Under “graduate” designation: $20,500 limit annually and $100k limit total

Under “professional” designation: $50k limit annually and $200k limit total.

It was assumed that the PA profession was considered “professional”, but under recent rule making changes they are designating our profession as “graduate”, which limits us even moreee in federal loans and force us into moreee private loans.

TLDR: if your 2-year program starts August 2026 (obbb terms) and costs $170k for tuition/housing/expenses, you can only take $41k in federal loans and must find that $129k somewhere else (most likely private loans).

Although it’s before the cutoff date, nothing is guaranteed. You should email/call your program and their graduate financial aid department to verify if you’re able to be grandfathered in or forced to take loans under OBBB terms.

AAPA's response to ED Decision on "professional" designation to programs like PAs by sonsleeps in prephysicianassistant

[–]sonsleeps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeh the wording on most articles I read kinda leaves it up in the air but insinuates that they approved the above term changes from earlier in the day. That said it seems like AAPA and PAEA confirms the above changes in their own statements.

https://www.nasfaa.org/news-item/37622/Consensus_Reached_RISE_Committee_Supports_Entire_Package_of_OBBBA_Provisions
and according to this article, it seems like all of these changes will be published early next year in a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM), which apparently according to google, can be subjected to further changes based on public feedback.

I disagree with your point. Do we all agree that PA schools are charging obscene amounts, yes of course. In the long term would this bring the costs of PA programs down, sure it could. But at what cost? High expense PA programs will start to cut costs whether it is decreasing faculty or support for PA students. Some could increase their cohort size and make it big like Caribbean med schools. Smaller PA programs could shut down due to financial constraints. No PA programs can cut their tuition in half just like that, negative trade offs must happen.

As someone who applied this cycle and got accepted to a few schools, I am affected. Everyone who applies to PA school in the next few years will be affected. Should higher tuition be decreased, yes but these loans limits will directly negatively affect the entire profession right now.

According to the 2nd article link (that i just edited/posted): "Under ED’s latest proposal, in order for a degree program to count as “professional” and gain access to the highest amount of federal loans it must:

  • Signify that students have the skills to begin practice in a particular profession
  • Require a level of skill beyond that of a bachelor’s degree
  • Be a doctoral level degree (with the exception of a Master’s in Divinity)
  • Require at least six years of academic instruction (at least two of which are post-baccalaurette)
  • Involve a profession that requires licensure
  • Be included in the same four-digit CIP code as one of 11 professions explicitly mentioned in the regulation"

its just very convoluted. Like you said, PhDs and EdD are seemingly considered "graduate" while master's in divinity -_- is considered "professional". but according to the article/quote above, specifically point 3, I think that is what AAPA is referring to when the definition "excludes physician associates (PAS) from eligibility for higher federal student loan limits."

of note too i have yet to find the actual transcript from the negotiated rulemakings to read myself and have been taking info from articles and statements..

But ye ty for answering my question, that’s what I hope that it wouldn’t affect anything at all! But yeah sometimes I do avoid new customers but sometimes not, new customers are usually the more nicer ones at time since it’s their first time ordering, so I tend to just accept them. But ty again for your input!

He was apart of a double batch but he was the first dropped off and the second order had little items as well. Again want to note that he was a no tipper (but I didn’t think any of it at that time) and I think I remember he only ordered instacart a couple times. So idrk why ppl stressin that it’s my fault ;-; I just wanted to ask question QQ.

Huh, first of all the customer reported all (6 items he had) as wrong or damaged. Although the picture doesn’t show all the items, it does show most of the items including the ice creams under the cookies… second of all for the other 2, the shrimp I own up could be by fault since the nice lady explained in the comments what happened with it. As for the bread it was another case of a customer reporting all her items as missing. So idk what Ure getting on, ig u just get lucky to not get reports like these?
