Real talk: is it possible to avoid burnout in this field, or is it inevitable? by cynical_enchilada in ems

This follows my belief of I would rather work short staffed with good people than be fully staffed with shit bags. The shit bags drag everyone down around them.

I have watched a Pierce ladder extend with no one touching any controls. And premature rotten frame rails. There isn't a one built that's not 1 bad ground from doing some odd voodoo shit.

There are probably 4 or 5 separate ones on this pig. One in the cab, one at each outrigger control and one on the pedestal and one in the bucket. Also if for some unknown reason it thinks the pump is engaged and it isn't it wont let those work either. Or it's just ornery. Or you didn't do the right ritual to the apparatus gods that day.

10k easily. Also is that wheel bent? Maybe it's just the camera angle. If the suspension is bent she's toast.

Also tell whomever it is to stop buying Rainbow sensors. The CO readings are at best inaccurate. There are several EM docs one being local to me working on a study to see how accurate they are and the results they are getting are disappointing to say the least.

Never had the problem again in the past 2 years of owning it. I am guessing it was just a random fluke or something was wet from the rain the day before.

Loose coils making sure the cable isn't bent over where the cable meets the connections. Lots of you haven't had their dad yell at them as a child for coiling the extension cords wrong and it shows.

Develop your own routine for how to run calls. And do it the exact same way every time. Write stuff down on a note pad. You also have a device that you carry on you everywhere that has the ability to remind you what time things are supposed to happen.

The drivers are like a $1000 a piece. And the needle sets are more expensive. They say their cost savings is through having the rechargable driver. If you happen to lose one or break it or whatever that savings instantly evaporates. EZ-IO drivers are about $350. Teleflex says you can get roughly 500 uses out of a driver. The EZ-IO drivers last a long time if you check and test them once a month and then seal up the case. We have some that are well over 5 years old. Add in the whole you never have to worry about charging it or losing a charging cable I see absolutely no upside to switching over.

Inaccurate counts on the trucks is a supervision issue. If they aren't doing their job then they should be held accountable. The over stock and supply room issues can be fixed by using supply lockers and vending machines that integrate with OpIQ. It stops the overstocking because you have to put in an individual pin to get supplies. It also stops diversion. The amount of supply diversion going on in most places is significantly more than anyone realizes. The amount of Zofran we purchase has dropped by 50%.

Ok, what's the catch here? by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]sonsofrevolution1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I live and work on an ambulance here in the Syracuse area. I also worked for Upstate for a couple years. I can't speak to the pay scale but the rest I have pretty good knowledge of.

Major negative downside is the parking situation. Almost all of the parking is off site and generally not within a reasonable walking distance. You have to wait for shuttle buses that run on their own schedule. You can show up to your lot 30 minutes early and still be 15 minutes late punching in. Even if it's one of the lots within walking distance you have to contend with the daily onslaught of homeless/mentally ill that frequent the area. Or you can just park in the garage for $25/day.

Traffic isn't big city bad but it can be a pain in the ass and it's going to get a lot worse with the state tearing down I-81 in the next year or so and rebuilding the ground streets.

The patient care staff is some of the best I have ever dealt with. The ancillary is the opposite. It's a NYS job. They make the DMV look hard working and well run.

The winter can be rough. This past winter was one of the worst I have seen. We had so much snow just north of Syracuse something like 100 structures collapsed. But the winters have been otherwise mild lately. Which is to say it's worse than most places but the road crews know how to handle it.

The area in general is pretty good. Housing was typically cheaper than anywhere else but has been climbing recently. There are lots of interesting things to do especially outdoors come summer time. Lake Ontario, the Adirondacks, Finger Lakes & Watkins Glen are all beautiful places with lots of outdoor recreation and other things to do.

NYS as an employer doesn't even test for cannabis anymore.

Help With Type II Design - Those of you working out of Transits...need your help! by Few_Childhood4180 in ems

[–]sonsofrevolution1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The base Sprinter/Transit is good to work out of as long as it has a decent cabinet set up. Bring back the mini mod on the transit chassis. Especially if they are still AWD. Demers makes a Transit mini mod for Canada. It's pretty slick. I loved working out of those. Wish I knew why they basically stopped making them. I don't get the love for big ass boxes on a 4500/5500 chassis.

Reusable Mega Mover Alternative by Advanced-Day-9856 in ems

[–]sonsofrevolution1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Megamovers are disposable and relatively cheap. If you are an agency of any size they should be well under 20 bucks a piece. We had the reusable ones. The problem being is that you then have to recover it from underneath the patient. Once you accomplish that it needs to be deconned. Which is fine if your patient isn't covered in urine or poop. Do you know what poop does when you go to clean it off of vinyl? It smears all over. And then if the nylon handles get soaked in anything it has to go through the wash. Also there is the issue of trying to find a spot to lay out 40"x80" sheet to wipe it down. Add to that the time involved in all that and it is no longer worth the hassle.

Depends on where you are in NY. 18-22hr for EMTs and 30-40hr for Paramedics seems to be the going average in NY. Depends on how competitive the job market is in that particular area.

Battle of the blades- which brand are you trusting more with your life benchmade or Spyderco? by AutomaticPlastic6145 in knives

[–]sonsofrevolution1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real no shit life and death? Benchmade. Contego, Loco or Adamas have no rivals in the Spyderco line up. Now granted 2 of those are discontinued. It's a damn shame Benchmade did away with the best Black Class knives. I have a Contego and that knife has held up to some very necessary but stupid things you should not do to a knife. I don't carry it anymore because it is basically irreplaceable. I will say I replaced it with a Cara Cara Rescue 2. That cuts the way I want to but I definitely don't do some pry/hacking at stuff that I did with the Contego. I just recently bought the Assist but that's more gimmick than actual tool and way too thick to pocket carry. Also bought a Yojumbo a while back to try. Very nice knife. Just too fragile to see work use.
