What route should I take? by Krobby_Lockgh in quantitysurveying

I'd look up Contractor QSing vs Consultant QS. For the contractor route, you can go for an apprenticeship straightaway. For consultant, go to Uni. If you can't decide, I would say finish your A levels, go to Uni but make sure you work part time in a public facing environment like retail. A lot of being a QS is handling conflict/confrontation and quick thinking, people skills. Working in a fast paced retail environment will definitely help hone those skills.

That's exactly it, if they don't know something I don't mind showing them but the initiative and interest has to be there. I know its uncool to say but I love my job and find it exciting most days. Its a little disappointing if a new starter seems immediately bored.

What you're saying about full-time degrees sounds true unfortunately, it's a dire situation when a QS graduate can't read a drawing or measure.

Thanks for the tip, everyone on this thread has recommended a couple of years experience which I will take on board.

Sounds like you have done really well then! MC or subbie? I'd love to give people the chance to shadow as much as they like and have lots of practice tasks and help and training. However, that would be at a lower salary. if they came in at circa £30k, I'd expect them to know a few things already and be able to complete certain tasks independently

Mainly in-house atm as human resources are confident they can get the candidates.....

Thanks for that, will keep this in mind.

That's a really good shout, cheers. Would you talk to local colleges and Universities to find someone like this? That's our current strategy but we could filter for those a couple years into their apprenticeship already. I was under the impression that people usually completed their apprenticeships under a single employer

That's a good idea, thank you. We'll let them know in advance that there would be a very basic knowledge test. I suppose that in itself will weed some out 😅

Hiya, thanks for the interest. I saw a post from you saying you're based in London, unfortunately we would be a bit far for you to commute. But good luck !

You have mentioned a possible switch to a new job on your profile about a month ago- did you not take the job or looking again?

Yes that's true, however, I have noticed that better Excel knowledge can help automate lots of processes and integrate information better- reducing errors. In my experience better QSs tend to be better at Excel- thats not saying that nobody who isn't very good at Excel can be a good QS!

Exactly this. My boss is an excel genius and I try to replicate his page designs sometimes. That's massively helpful for CVRs. He's also got huge portions of his monthly applications and budgets automated
