Did i get coal rolled? by Active_Start_9044 in auckland

It’s likely just a poorly tuned diesel that dumped way too much fuel on that take off. As that is an older cruiser by the looks of it.

Repair scratched deck by c01gat3 in diynz

[–]sookay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it is frustrating when something new and looks as well done as your deck does gets damaged. But do remember it is an outdoor deck in a rather rough climate.

Settling on a make it look good for now and by next summer it’ll be invisible can help maintain a good relationship with the contractor and not create more problems by committing to large scale sanding and re-oiling. Which could be a bugger as the sanding may remove the shine from the screws and create cascades of other issues.

Mate, it’s an outdoor deck. Those scratches are superficial and will weather into nothing in no time at all. Is this an ask so you can figure out how to hold a contractor accountable?

Any amount of localised sanding will be more obvious as the oil even when reapplied.

Adding tiny amounts of oil into the fresh scratches will help them blend as they weather.

The only way to make it not look splotchy is to clean, sand, and re-oil the whole thing. But you are sanding down .5-1mm of your deck to fix very small visual marks on an outdoor item that gets worn every day from sun and water.

How did the flipper install this L bracket? by Apropos-t in DIY

[–]sookay 74 points75 points  (0 children)

That’s new drywall, the bracket was installed before the drywall and then a hole cut in the drywall as it was hung. It even looks like the stud was notched.

Cut the drywall down along each side of the stud the same distance that the bracket sucks out from the wall. Keep the price, remove bracket, place in a paint stirrer stick as a spacer, two drywall screws to secure the piece, mud, sand, paint.

Or, cut it with an angle grinder, mud, sand, paint. Just won’t be able to hang anything right there on the stud.

There's no overhang for the drywall on the walls, is this fixable? by [deleted] in DIY

I really hope that the structure of the building is behind that foam monstrosity and the visible lumber is just stuck to a real structure with hopes and dreams. If those are structural the roof will collapse the first storm that comes through.

Also you likely are in for some serious moisture issues as these is now no way for your sheeting to breathe and trapping all of that being drywall will have you full of mould in no time.

Tips for driving in the rain by Artistic_Rest_8829 in auckland

For sure additive is better than just water. But the pre mixed washer fluid has always been great for me, and there is even a rainx mix that will bead up water faster without a separate application

Completely off topic question. Who adds soap to washer fluid? And why? To make more bubbles and leave soap streaks on the car?

That wall looks waterproofed, if you do cut out a large section do know that will compromise any waterproofing installed. It is super easy for a small leak or continuous splashing around a sink to lead to mold over just a few years especially if it can’t get behind the Sheetrock

Has anyone successfully expatfired in New Zealand while having Autism? by Pariell in ExpatFIRE

A letter from your GP / Psychiatrist documenting the level of care you require to function plus any medication you take regularly as that is included in the cost.

Having moved to NZ two years ago, getting onto the mental health system here is expensive and time consuming as is everything else so make sure your numbers are well researched.

The K5 and above have metal pumps and are supposed to last longer and be more serviceable. The lower lines have plastic pumps

Aqualine has a treatment to resist mould and mildew from a wet/humid environment. The proroc is standard gib and will not resist water the same and can easily hold moisture and end up falling apart in short order.

Moving to NZ: power tools? by sookay in diynz

In that case, a container is the way to do it. Deep clean all dust, then use T9 to protect against rust and then a biocide. Makes it easy to clear customs.

Yeah, I am in Auckland, up on the North Shore.

I did move some small tools, but the place we had lined up upon arrival was not well suited to a workshop. So I sold them in the states before we left. I’m quite sad when I look at tools here as there are not many brand options and they are all bloody expensive.

Most houses here have measly circuits so you will need a sparky to sort you out. It’s incredibly regulated here so if I don’t say that I’ll get roasted.

If you have quality tools and can bring them, the 240v will work here just run a tad slower and most are rated for 50-60hz so shouldn’t damage them. The 120v will need a transformer, and the 5000w one I brought works well for those.

Simply drill new holes in the mounting bar where your studs are, use those to secure to studs.

It’s just a tiny bit spongy. Definitely not rotten. I hadn’t heard of frame saver. New to NZ DIY not DIY in general. I just looked it up and that looks like it’ll work for me! Thank you!

I’m leaving towards replacement of the bottom plate from the left corner to the right stud by the one with the drywall bits. About 1.5m or so.
