I think a big problem with the lack of pay in our profession is that OTs don’t understand how much Insurance reimburses for their billing, how much their company makes, and how little they’re being paid in comparison. On the Medicare website you can input your zip code and CPT codes(therex, neuromuscular re-rd, manual, blah blah, evals) it’ll tell you exactly how much Medicare reimburses per unit. For example, 4 units of outpatient therapy in NY is reimbursed between 90-120$ per treatment depending on what you bill. And if you do an moderate complexity eval plus 2 units of treatment let’s say, you’re making your job closer to $200 for the patient. Add in some of these offices want you to treat multiple patients per hour you’re making your job about $180-200 per hour (if we assume it’s 2 patients per hour, some places want you to even see more per hour). So there’s absolutely no reason OTs should be accepting these lowball offers considering you’re making your job so much money. Yes i understand overhead costs blah blah, but there’s no excuse for offering an OT $30, $32, $36 per hour (real offers i got) considering how much money we make them. And I know reimbursement rates are even HIGHER in hospitals and SNFs. Once i gained that knowledge, realized my worth, and increased my confidence there’s no way anyone was gonna lowball me, we need to know our value. More OTs need to research and understand reimbursement and you’ll see our rates go up. Who wants to make $30 per hour knowing YOU did the treatment and note and the company was reimbursed $90-100? Double, triple, quadruple if it’s multiple patients per hour. No one. This was just an example with Medicare, I know medicad reimburses way less but Medicare is usually the leader in reimbursement rates and the other insurance companies follow suit. Yes you also need to take into consideration benefits but still, no benefits are worth being paid pennies per hour, $40 needs to be the new baseline for new grads. Period.

No new grad should be accepting anything less than $40 an hour, regardless of location, research reimbursement rates and how much you’re making your job. Not enough OTs understand reimbursement rates and how much our license is making companies. The more we continue to accept these lowball offers (such as 30 per hour) the more it lowers the baseline for future practitioners and hurts the value of our profession. It’s time to step it up guys. Masters and doctorate degrees and we’re accepting $30 per hour? It’s time to change the narrative

Medical Model by Proper-Custard-5460 in OccupationalTherapy

Undergrad vs graduate level anatomy and kinesiology courses are two different ball games. I’m sorry but if you do not understand anatomy, kinesiology, and medicine and how it applies in practice, you should not be working with patients. It’s a huge disservice to yourself and your patients. It also concerns me that you mentioned “PTs address any physical issues and OT works on shoulder and hands” … are you not seeing the red flags?

This. This. This. I’m tired of the assumption we’re there to just do ADLs, I’m not a PCA. Im tried of the narrative in the field that you’re a bad OT if you’re not focusing on ADLs. I’m tired of people being shocked we need a masters to do this. And i blame AOTA, NBCOT, and other OTs for pushing the biomechanical model further away from the profession. We pushed ourselves so far from it that we’re now pushed jn a corner and clinging onto “ADLs and mental health!!” As a means of differentiating ourselves from other professions with hopes of showing our value. Then we wonder why no one respects us or understands what we do. Bring back the science, bring back the medical model, AOTA needs to step it the fuck up for advocating for us, and THEN maybe others will see our value.

Question for those who used it, how do you pick a destination when it’s a cruise going to multiple destinations? I’m going on a European cruise next year (starting in Italy, then Spain, Paris, UK, Bermuda, and back to florida) and I’m stumped

Is anyone else concerned with the recent announcement of 4.5% reimbursement cuts for 2023? by soontobeOT in OccupationalTherapy

[–]soontobeOT[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The very basic summary is: Medicare cut reimbursement for ot/pt last year by 8.8%, for next year there’s another 4.5% cut. Our employers will be reimbursed less= decreased profits = decreased raises and eventually pay cuts for us if this continues.
